What questions should I ask an insider?

I am beginning the application process for a much-desired position. One of my good friends works in a similar position for the same company on the other coast. I will definitely have her ear during the application and interview process, and I want to make the most of being able to pump her for information. However, I don't even know where to begin. What questions should I ask her that will give me usable insight into the company, that I can turn around and use to strengthen my resume (and hopefully land and ace an interview)?

send a resume now or later?

I've been looking for an casting internship in NY. Most of the places I've called up have said that they're currently fully staffed but I'm more than welcome to email them my resume. When I've asked if they have a sense for when they might be looking again they've usually responded that they don't know. Would it make more sense for me to send my resume and cover letter to them now so they have it on file or wait a couple of months and call again to see if they have a vacancy later? [more inside]

Career Crisis- How to get hired after only 2 months at current job?

Hello, Metafilter! Long time lurker (10 years), first time poster. To sum it up- after a failed stint as an AmeriCorps VISTA (6 months) following graduation from the University of South Carolina with a degree in International Studies and a minor in Economics- I have spent a year unemployed, a year as a bank teller, another year unemployed, and over a year as a server and a tax season as a tax pro at H&R block. I went back to school during the time as a server to get enough credits to sit for the CPA (one computer apps class away from obtaining accounting certificate at a local community college). Moved back to SC and spent from 07/12-06/13 as an Assistant Service Manager at a car dealership (hated it because A, I have asthma and missed a ton of work due to complications from working outside, B, I knew nothing about cars, and C, I am not a fan of Customer Service/commission pay). How do I respond to resume rejection because of high salary expectations

I sent my resume for a job that I am very qualified for but just received a message that my expectations are above the scope. They did not provide a range, just a requirement to include expected salary in the cover letter. I stated my salary and said that it is negotiable. I have plenty of wiggle room, I am in a new market that is a bit lower than others I've been in (I did lower it from past compensation, but not enough apparently). What can I say to convey I still want to be considered & am willing to take up to $15k less without sounding desperate? I am worth every penny that I asked for, and that is not just my opinion. I am very very good at what I do but again, I realize it is a new, different market so I am ok with lower...

Resume help!

I've had the same job for the past 6 years. In that time, my job title has changed 3 times, my department has been involved in four major reorgs and been moved all over the company, my department name has changed 5 times, and I've reported to 4 different people. Throughout all that, the actual job I've been doing has remained the same. How do I indicate that on a resume for an internal position in another department?

How dumb should my resume go?

I've been a professional musician, music entrepreneur, and music educator for nearly 10 years (I'm in my mid-twenties). I have a day job in public school teaching for the fall, but I need a job in the "in between" - ie the next 6ish months. However, because my resume is very heavily music biz and music influenced, I'm having a hard time getting taken seriously in any regular retail or restaurant job interviews. I've tried dumbing down my resume with decent results, but do I need to go dumber to actually get a job? [more inside]
