I backed it up, now to get it back

What is the best way to restore my backup to a new(er) iMac? Can you restore from Time Machine that has a slightly newer OS version than the new(er) computer? Or if you restore from a different backup that is a few days older but that would restore the matching OS, will Time Machine still work properly and let me update the missing recent work? Help me restore app data (only) to a clean iPhone 5S running iOS 7.1

After a complicated chain of circumstances involving a SIM migration, a grandfathered prepaid data plan that transferred from an iPhone 3G to a 4 to the current 5S, and many hours (no exaggeration) at the AT&T store while their employees talked to level 2 tech support, I was left with: It is not an option to restore the entire phone from the backup. Help me restore just the user data for selected apps. [more inside]

Is my phone replacement a dud?

Someone recently stole my Iphone 4 and with my upgrade coming up in December and not having insurance I had to resort to alternative means to acquire a new phone. I purchased a HTC thunderbolt online with a cracked screen for fairly cheap. When I first got it the "device" worked great. I can browse the phone and connect to wifi and have no SD card issues but when I went to activate it at verizon they stuck a 4G LTE SIM card in it and tried activating it for over an hour then eventually told me they were stumped and to buy another phone or call customer support. Backup an image of a boot drive to a RAID 1 & perform restoration?

I have a PCI-E SSD as my boot drive, and a win7-created RAID 1 on two 3TB drives. My boot drive has my user folder on it, but my documents, music, pictures, videos, etc folders shortcut to their respectable folders on the RAID. I would like this to be a full redundancy scheme and it is, but I've run into several nags and I would like to know how to fix them and prepare a fix-it plan before any of the drives fails. Extracting/Importing iPhone SMS/MMS Data

So, I want to restore my iPhone to a backup that's about 1 month old. However, I don't want to lose all of the SMS/MMS and Contacts data that I've accumulated in the meantime. Is it possible to extract and import this newer data into my older backup? I've searched around previous, similar MeFi questions and various 3rd party software, but no dice. And, sadly, jailbreaking is not an option. [more inside]

The reset and the restore, they do nothing.

Is there an archive of old firmware for iPods? I have a 30GB 5th gen iPod - songs often skip, the device freezes, and audible excessive spinning is causing major battery drain. Reset and restore are useless, and I am thinking it is maybe a quirk of the latest firmware. [more inside]

NoScript failed me and left: what do I do now?

How paranoid should I be about my Windows XP Pro machine after hitting a dodgy site with Firefox 3.6, scanning with Microsoft Security Essentials, updating NoScript, scanning with MSE again, and finally using Windows to restore to yesterday's restore point, about 18 hours before hitting that site? Firefox is now missing NoScript completely, but it's been installed for weeks and surely should have been here yesterday morning. What wierd thing happened while creating Windows 7 restore disks?

A friend has a new Asus Essentio CM5671. He first transferred his data files to the new machine. Then, while trying to create the Windows 7 restore disks, he appears to have somehow reset the computer to its factory state, restoring all the crapware that had been removed and obliterating his documents and data. Any idea how he may have done this and how he can un-do it?

Why won't iTunes recognize that my iphone has already been set up?

On Friday, I used Sn0wbreeze to update my (jailbroken) iphone 3gs from 3.1.3 to 4.0. Everything went smoothly, and I restored all my previous apps and files. I synced the phone a few times that night to get all my settings the way I wanted. Today, I plugged in my phone to sync it, but now iTunes is showing the "Set Up Your Phone" screen, with the options of either setting it up as a new phone or restoring from a backup. What gives, and how do I make it quit? [more inside]

Help me restore the finish on antique copper!

I have an antique copper pot that has lost its luster. It's an ordinary enough saucepan, but it was made and then brought from Russia by my great-grandparents in the 1880s. My own parents just recently passed it on to me and I'm proud to display it in my home. But it is rather dull-looking and is not as pretty as it could be. I would love some advice about how to polish it. I'm not interested in restoring it to a point where it looks like a knockoff, I'd just love to reveal the warm coppery glow I'm sure is lurking under the dullness.

Ipod Restore Issues on a working older gen iPod

I have a 4th Gen click wheel iPod. It still plays and charges. Today, I got the "restore" error message when hooking it up to my iMac/iTunes. I tried restoring it but it then gave me the msg "The iPod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1433)" and directed me to here. I tried the usual stuff recommended including: unplugging and replugging; trying new cord; holding menu and center button down for reboot; trying on other macs -- and still get the same msg. Although the technology is old, the iPod itself has hardly been used. Any suggestions? (Besides buying a new one.) Thanks for your input.
