[NYC Filter] I want to take my girlfriend out to a nice dinner. No special occasion being celebrated. I'm thinking New American style. For vibe, think Northern Spy, which she and I loved. She's a vegetarian (I'm not) so I want the place to be veg-friendly. Most places only have a token veggie appetizer and veggie entree. I'd love to find a place that offers her more choices. Bonus points if they take reservations. Any thoughts guys?
We're going out in the Kips Bay neighborhood soon with friends. Can you recommend a good restaurant for a festive meal that is NOT Indian? As close to 29th and 2nd as possible. [more inside]

However, I feel like I'm in bit of a rut, mostly returning to neighborhood reliables and a handful of other favorite restaurants around the city. The wealth of information about NYC restaurants out there is pretty daunting, so I'm hoping for some direction from the hivemind. Some more details inside. [more inside]

NYC restaurant filter: Taking an elderly, out-of-town couple (that we don't know well) out to dinner. We'd like to take them somewhere reasonably nice (cost not a concern), but we do know that they prefer plainer foods that are easy on the digestive system. Manhattan required, midtown preferred. I currently live in NYC and am graduating from grad school here in about two and a half weeks. Two part question. 1. In '08 I ate at a restaurant in Manhattan, and I can't remember the name. It was on top of a building, there was a garden/atrium/bar outside the dining room. I remember seeing big king-like chars at each table. The menu listed a fantastic mac 'n cheese. Any ideas? 2. A friend told me about a great restaurant in Chinatown that has incredible steamed buns of all sorts. Does anyone know the name?

I'd like for a group of us to be able to eat and do something (like bowl) at the same time then we'd all go out to a bar afterward. Anyone have any fun restaurant or party place suggestions in NYC? btw, not interested in bowling or karaoke suggestions

I go to NYC at least once a month, and I'm always on the hunt for good vegan restaurants, especially in the East Village area, although I'd love to hear about good eats in other areas of the city as well. I've been to Quintessence, Bonobos, and Caravan of Dreams, and I go gaga over LifeThyme, the grocery/bookstore/cafeteria on 7th Ave and 9th St - they have six inch high veggie pizza that's to die for. Are there any more yummy vegan places I need to know about, and if so, what's the most yummilicious thing on the menu?
I'm going to Churrascaria Plataforma in NYC in a couple of weeks, an all-you-can-eat Brazilian restaurant that encourages gastronomic excess. What are strategies I can employ to help me consume more food than a person should reasonably eat in a single sitting? (Time isn't a factor, I don't think--it's a fixed-price menu, and I believe you can stay as long as you like.) And is there any Brazilian cuisine that I should try while I'm there?
