Help me understand my body and weight loss.

I weigh myself every weekday at work on the same scale (an electronic medical-grade scale they use for patients at the hospital where I work) and at the same time of day. I have noticed that when I go off my diet for a few days and my weight creeps up, that that excess weight falls off again when I return to my diet much more quickly than the weight I've been carrying for awhile. Why? [more inside]

On the subject of buttereating, hurf has been surprisingly durf.

You know how when you're falling asleep random half-thoughts will pop into your head? Well, I had one of them last night, and I think it's a quote from something, but I don't really know what it is and can't place it and it's kind of driving me bonkers. [more inside]

Help me make my friends laugh... in less than 24 hours.

In about 24 hours I will be picking up old friends from the airport and taking them to a rented apartment in the city, near where I live. They will be tired and jet-lagged so I wanted to make their first day as hassle-free and pleasant as possible. At the same time, they have a goofy sense of humor and I would love to play a prank on them. Can you help me make them laugh? [more inside]

Hey, Chinese speakers . . . got a question for you

Actually, that should read "Hey, readers of Chinese script, etc". Recently, some of my neighbors took exception to the opening of a homeless shelter in my neighborhood. They held a protest. Some of the signs were in Chinese. What do these signs say in English, if you've got a moment? Many thanks in advance.

I miss cassette MixTapes! How to correctly tag/import into Itunes

Itunes 11.1.5 MAC OS X 10.7.5 --- I made a mixtape with a hodgepodge of MP3's that I downloaded from here & there. What do I need to do in the ID3 Editor to make sure they import into Itunes as one album and in the correct order? Temporarily sealing windows

The building I live in will be power washed next week and the landlord has asked that we (i) close our windows and (ii) move items away from the windows that might be damaged by inadvertent leakage. I'd like to take the extra step of sealing my windows because I am fully confident that they will leak. My thought is some kind of tape but I don't want to harm the paint on the sills or leave marks on the glass. Thoughts?

Appropriate flower or plant birthday gift for friend

A dear friend of mine is turning forty-mumble-something tomorrow. We are getting together to celebrate this weekend, but I would like to send flowers or a plant to her office on her actual birthday. Would it be awkward to receive flowers from someone who is not a significant other? (We really are just friends - no romantic undertones.) Are there only certain kinds of flowers that would work? I am leaning toward sending her a nice plant, but not sure if plants are reserved for condolences/sympathy. More details inside. [more inside]

Looking for an old-fashioned 4th of July celebration

When I used to live in Texas, my friends and I used to escape the big city to a small town that held a old-school 4th of July event. The firetruck parade, the town band enthusiastically playing John Phillip Sousa, funnel cakes and cotton candy and a ferris wheel, the whole nine yards. It was awesome. I would love to find something similar near (less than a two hour drive) DC. Thanks everyone!

Similar Music to This?

Being a life-long fan of Neil Finn, I bought his latest album a couple of months ago. I am absolutely head over heels in love with the Divebomber track which is very atypical of him (with a handful of exceptions). Seeing as my musical horizon isn't what it used to be, can you recommend music similar to the Divebomber track? [more inside]

How much might a sleepover nanny charge?

Late 80s indie song ID

I've been searching for various songs I used to have on tape from UK Radio 1's John Peel show in the late 80s (roughly 87-90). One in particular is proving a bit tricky.
