Can I see iOS app permission before buying?

When I look at Android apps in Google Play, it's easy to click a button and see what permissions it needs. Is there any way in the iOS App Store to find out what permissions an app needs without buying it? [more inside]

Ordering tea directly from China: safe?

I've tried a bunch of different loose leaf green teas, and my favorite comes from an online tea store based in China. However, by ordering directly from them, I'm bypassing European and British consumer safety regulations. If you can read Chinese -- or you know something about food safety in China -- you can help me figure out whether this is a risky purchase. [more inside]

Meant to be or not meant to be?

I met this really great guy a few months ago (in a pretty romantic/spontaneous way) after a string of not great relationships. Everything is really healthy, relationship-wise right now. We both have loads of space to sort our brains/ lives, and the small amount of time we do spend together (looking like once a week/ once every two weeks) is really, really something special. However, he’s on a career fast track and has a hard time balancing work/family. [more inside]

Short-term health insurance for someone with unclear national residence

I'm in the middle of a 2-week period during which it is not clear to me in which country I am a resident for the purposes of buying travel medical insurance. I'll be traveling to the US for the last 3 days of that period and will need medical insurance. This seems to require residency in the country from which one is traveling. I'm a 27-year-old person with no known serious medical condition, so I just want something that will cover emergencies. Please hope me. [more inside]

Mnemonic version for Saxon kings

I'm familiar with the William the Conqueror onwards verse about English kings (Willie, Willie, Harry, Stee, etc), but I know that I saw one for the Saxon kings somewhere and I can't find it. I recall bits like "With Egbert's name our tale is led, then Aethels Wulf, Bald, Bert, and Red" and "Never-ready Aethelred" and you'd really think I would be able to google up an answer with that as a start, but I've got nothing.

CS junior, needs recommendations for career path, companies to apply to

I'm about to be a junior in computer science (CS) at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. I'm passionate about programming, but I am also interested in numerous other subfields of technology. I don't like having to rush (at anything -- this post was edited and rewritten many times); I prefer polish, good design, and careful work, where everything is intentionally and thoughtfully crafted. Where should I apply for internships and look for careers? [more inside]

scp return codes different?

I'm working on testing a modification to a bash script for work. I'm trying to scp a file to the same source directory. For testing purposes, I've altered the permissions on the target directory so that the scp'ing user doesn't have permissions to write to it. The first try I get a return code of 1. The second try I get a return code of 0, even though the permissions haven't changed and the file actually fails to transfer. [more inside]

No-data prepaid plan recommendations for my old iPhone

I would like my kids to use my old iPhone 4s. I don't need a data plan, since they can use the home Wi-Fi. They won't be making a lot of calls or sending many texts so I just need a plan that allows me to buy minutes rather than pay every month. My phone might still be locked to AT&T but I should be eligible to unlock it if necessary. The AT&T network has the best coverage in my area.

We just want every little thing to be alright

I woke up this morning, smiled with the rising sun, and then heard (approximately) three little birds singing in my bathroom ceiling. Upon further investigation, it turns out that they are nesting in our bathroom venting, in the ductwork between the the ventilation fan and the exterior wall. We have seen the adults fly into the vent opening on the side of our house carrying food to their babies, and we hear the babies chirruping throughout the day. [more inside]

Apartment-hunting on short notice in the Boston area: how to proceed?

How big a problem is a (relatively) high home voltage?

I have recently bought a flat (yay!). I had an electrician in today to look at some broken appliances (the hob, fridge and bathroom fan), and while checking things out he noticed that the voltage of the power in the house was unusually high (248-250V), possibly because I'm close to the transformer, and he confirmed that this could shorten the life of electrical devices. He mentioned that you can now buy a gadget to add to your electrics to step down the voltage to a more normal level, like ~220V. Is it true that a high-ish voltage can cause problems, and does anyone have any experience of the voltage-fixer he mentioned? I'm in the UK.

Is it a lifelong solution?

A good friend of mine is participating in methadone replacement theory to deal with opiate pill addiction. She tells me that she can't ever see herself attending an inpatient rehab to get off both opiates and methadone, as it would require her to take significant time away from her job and her child, and she would always worry about relapsing. Instead, she plans to continue with MRT for the rest of her life. Is this a healthy and realistic plan? Can someone stay on methadone for the next fifty years of her life? [more inside]
