My 2-year-old niece is battling cancer. What can I say to be supportive?

I have been with my partner for over 5 years and know his family fairly well. A little over a year ago his brother's one year old daughter was diagnosed with cancer. His daughter, whom I consider as a niece even though my partner and I are not married, has now been battling cancer for over a year. It appears to be quite aggressive. When my sister-in-law calls to give me updates about their daughter's condition (or vice-versa), what can I say to be supportive and express that I care? More details inside. [more inside]

Cheap graphics card for 2008 iMac?

Apple iMac A1225 desktop computers from 2008 came with the notoriously unreliable Nvidia 8800GS graphics card that burns out and turns the iMacs into bricks. Getting a new Nvidia 8800GS graphics card costs about $650 for the part. Getting a used one on costs about $300. Is there a cheap alternative -- something that costs, say, $50? As I understand it, the only alternative is the ATI 4850, which go for about $300 used. Yet I find it hard to believe that there are no other graphics card options.

Techno babble

I like movies/shows that are heavy on the jargon and the fast-talking. Scenes of professionals in crisis that don't bother to fill the audience in on what's going on. Think secret-service operations on the West Wing, air traffic controllers, military maneuvers, television control rooms, Le Carre's espionage slang, etc. What movies/tv shows will I enjoy? Note: It doesn't have to be military or necessarily violent. I like the thrill that comes from the fast talking and the quick decisions and such.

Workplace etiquette question

I've recently been teamed on a project with a co-worker who dresses and acts professionally, but tends to wear low-cut blouses. The problem is not what she is wearing but that she is frequently, nervously making adjustments to her neckline. So often that it's now making me nervous. Question inside. [more inside]

Young adult novel about becoming a girl becoming a fugitive?

In the late 90s, I read a lot of young adult novels - the plot of one in particular has stuck with me for years and I think about it way too much. slow fade isn't working

I have a friend who I consider to be almost family. We used to be extremely close through middle and high school, and probably most of while I was in college. She had a really rough childhood that resulted in PTSD and lasting issues with relationships. Over the past few years our daily lives have become pretty different and I think as she's had less going on she's gotten harder to talk to. I've been trying the slow fade, but she's noticed and I have to figure out how much to explain. [more inside]

Stockholm with little kids

We will be spending four days in Stockholm in the middle of June, with two boys, three and six years old. We've got the standard order guidebook suggestions (Vasa Museum, Skansen, etc.) of things to do, but I'd really love some suggestions of fun things for kids, or even just playgrounds for them to run around when they have had enough of Vikings and whatnot. They tend to be very excited about all modes of transportation, so trams, ferries, etc are a bonus. We will be staying near Ostermalm.

How do I get Websense to stop blocking my website?

My company website is being blocked by Websense on the grounds that it is a compromised website that *may* contain malware. The webhost assures us that there is no malicious code, and we've run several other scans that say the same thing. There are four links at issue, and they just redirect within the site. This is a problem because our largest client uses Websense filtering, and none of them can see our website. Websense won't even talk to me because I'm not a Websense client. Have any of you encountered this issue before or have any ideas on how to resolve it?

Children's book about "growing" machine/industrial sprawl?

An image (link) reminded me of a children's book I read at school (in England) in the 1980s. I can't remember much about it except it involved a machine that started out small and benign, but eventually grew to take over and pollute the whole world (allegorically, no doubt). I think it was largely or entirely pictorial, so impossible to google for! Anyone have any idea what it might have been? Thanks!

So I have come down with shingles, what to expect

I have been diagnosed with shingles. I currently have patches of raised rash running from spine to sternum passing through my armpit. I have been on Valtrex for 2 days and the rash is still expanding a bit. The rash is a bit itchy and annoying and occasionally hurts but otherwise I have not had major pain to this point. So what I want to know is what to expect. I work in a field that has mostly desk work punctuated by some physical labor. Should I expect to have problems with work? Or am I do for an easy case as I have not had much nerve pain?
