I was listening today to Bascom Lamar Lunsford’s “I Wish I Was a Mole in the Ground”, which includes the unforgettable line, “the railroad man, he’ll kill you if he can/And drink out your blood like wine”. Who is this guy? Will he? Why? [more inside]

What musicals/shows should I see on Broadway while I'm in New York? I'll be visiting NYC in September of this year and I'm unlikely to be back for another few years, so I'd really like to know what good shows are on right now. [more inside]
Hey folks! I have pretty much a full recipe of Thug Kitchen's Landlocked Ceviche in the fridge right now, minus the cilantro and avocado. Basically, a salad of cauliflower, tomato, red onion and jalepeno doused in lime juice and salt. It's...just ok. Can I shoehorn it into tonight's dinner? [more inside]
I have been visiting older relatives in their late 80s still living on their own. They were once wonderful cooks and still enjoy good food but they are losing the ability to cook from scratch on a regular basis. What are some DIY cooking kits I can put together for them so they can still cook for themselves? [more inside]
How do I buy "good seats" for a long-running NYC Broadway show for the minimum amount over face value? Assume that my knowledge of musical-ticket-buying only goes so far as a Google search. [more inside]
I've come to the conclusion that I have way too much stuff and want to simplify and get rid of a lot. For those who've gone before, any regrets? [more inside]
I would like to read any great science writing out there on cats -- particularly, that focusing on interspecies communication. But I'll take whatever I can get! [more inside]
I have recently gotten rejection letters from all of the PhD programs to which I applied for the coming fall. Now I'm back to square one and I think I need to figure out what's wrong with my approach so far. Basically I want the hive mind to tell me exactly what steps it thinks I should take to find the right school and make my application competitive. Can you help? [more inside]
I'm looking for more music that sounds like this Lou Reed bootleg with Don Cherry on trumpet. [more inside]
My wife recently pointed out my lack of good history books about the American Revolution. I have (and loved) James McPherson's Battle Cry of Freedom and John Keegan's The First World War, but was struggling to come up with the best single volume history of the war in a similar style to those. There are any number of books that would be great if I wanted to find out information about single aspects of the war and the causes of it, but I want a single book that mostly focuses on the actual who was where and why. I went to a fed-x today to try to ship some chocolate and OTC headache meds to my friend in Mexico. It got complicated fast.... [more inside]
I just had my wisdom teeth taken out. They told me that there would be a followup appointment, but didn't bother to schedule it. Their office has the WACKIEST hours - it's hard to even get them on the phone. I've got a weird schedule with school. It doesn't seem worth the effort to try to schedule a followup appointment. Is it really that important, or can i safely skip it if everything feels fine?
We currently use the streaming capabilities of our DVD player. The UI is very sluggish to respond, and rewinding/fast forwarding/scrubbing is a nightmare. We use Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, primarily, with a smattering of YouTube. [more inside]
What characterizes someone for whom closure is anathema? Or at least, feels no drive toward closure, and is perfectly OK with broken, messy, unresolved relationships? (Not just romantic or interpersonal ones... but those are what matter most IMO.) [more inside]

So, there's someone who has been a real absolutely mean apathetic narcissistic jerk of all jerks with my husband and me (mostly, me). It is a close relative. We can't ignore them (too close), we can't avoid them, and when they visit they take over our lives for a couple of months every few years (2-3? if we're lucky). I have never hated anyone as much. How do I not let it influence me? [more inside]
I need a new bed frame, and I found one that's hitting a lot of my buzzwords: it's hand-made from locally-sourced hardwood by a small business. And at $280 (Canadian) for a queen, it's less expensive than comparable beds from IKEA. So I'm assuming it's made by someone in their garage. How can I tell if it's well made? [more inside]
I have a nearly four year old who is mesmerized by all things aviation, plus I have a mass of airline miles and hotel points. Where to go? [more inside]
I've been diagnosed with Labyrinthitis. I've had it for 6 weeks, and it doesn't appear to be going away. If you've had this or someone close to you has, how long did it last? How did you cope? If it didn't go, what do you do? Surely it should be going away by now. More details below... [more inside]
I have a 24 ounce bottle of Clorox Control Bleach Crystals, but I lost the dosing cap. I would like to know the the volume in fluid ounces of line 1 and line 2, which is referenced on the instructions on the back of the bottle. I tried calling Clorox about this, but they couldn't / wouldn't help. If you have a bottle of this stuff in your laundry room, could you measure the dose for line 1 and line 2 for me? Thanks!
I am a Canadian visiting in London England, staying at an AirBnB near Baker Street Station. I have bone spurs/ osteoarthritis in both knees, usually very manageable. On Monday I suddenly developed crippling pain in the right knee. Rest and ice stopped it-- but normal walking soon triggered it again Since then I've been using ice, my knee brace, Naproxen and/or Voltaren and of course *long*periods of rest but in fact the pain is getting worse. It is more and more easily triggered. Yesterday I rested the entire day and did nothing but walk a few blocks in total to go for dinner, and tonight I woke myself just from the pain of a wrong movement [more inside]

Mr. Getawaysticks and I are attempting to move the Downriver area of Michigan (this is ~30 miles south of Detroit or so). The rental market in this area is really expensive compared to what it would be in monthly mortgage payments. Our credit is fine and we have stable jobs, so we should buy, right? But what if we want to leave the area in 2 years? [more inside]

I'm in Italy for a little while and figuring out the restaurant customs — including purchasing a liter of flat or sparkling water at each meal. Today, I was still a little thirsty but had to run, and asked if I could take the half-empty (glass, but obviously commercial) bottle. The server said I couldn't, and I asked if the same was true for plastic bottles. She said that, in either case, it's not appropriate to take leftover water. What's up with that (assuming it's generally true)?
I have a need I could probably satisfy with something COTS, but I kinda want to build something again. I've been out of that game for a while, and getting my hand back in would be nice. What should I use? [more inside]
Pretty much as above - can you tell/point me to a great tortilla soup recipe that doesn't use a slow cooker? I love love love tortilla soup and decided it's about time I learned how to make it. I don't have a slow cooker though and have no interest in buying one. I live in south Texas so I can get pretty much any ingredient required easily. I know I can google for recipes but I'd rather get tried and true recipes. Thanks!

What would you see in California if you were starting out in LA and had a car and 7 days to travel, only caveat being that you need to be in San Diego on the morning of the 8th day? We're going to LA for a family wedding in August. Taking an extra week afterwards to travel around and see as much of California as possible. However, we have to prioritize as we only have 7 days. Flying out from San Diego on the 8th day. We will have a rental car and we're interested in seeing as much as possible, as it will be my first time in California. Driving a lot is not a problem; we love roadtrips, and both of us drive so we can take turns. Please help us plan an itinerary! [more inside]
Just set up a new Echo for my mother, and we are having an issue that is small, but sort of irritating. Alexa is answering all queries (as best she can), but the little "bong" that acknowledges that she is being addressed is not happening. Glitch, or do the newer ones just not do it anymore? This has proven difficult to Google.

I'm considering a trip to northern Peru this summer. I would love to hear from people who have been to Trujillo, Chiclayo, Lambayeque or Cajamarca recently, as well as from anyone who has been to Chachapoyas or to the site of Kuelap. I'm primarily interested in Peruvian archaeology and history, but I also love the Peru of today. I'm proficient in Spanish. What were your impressions? What sorts of day trips and excursions did you go on? Pros and cons? [more inside]

TL;DR: Current job: The good: relaxing, fancy title, nice perks/benefits, flexibility, easy schedule The bad: boring, frustrating, mundane, not in a field I love, full of micromanagers, no room for growth, no intellectual challenge A different job: The good: a field I think I want to be in, intellectually challenging, meaningful, room for growth The bad: loss of perks/benefits, potential loss of schedule flexibility, not easy, stressful, lots of unknowns Which would you chose? I have several music books published during the mid to late 1800s. It seems to have been a period before metronomes, however there are things like “quarter note=pend. 10 inches,” which I take to be a metronome marking of sorts using pendulum. How does this work? [more inside]
