I was told there would be no math.

I've crossed a bunch of plants with one another, and now have a bunch of berries on those plants. Each berry can contain way more seeds than I have room to pot up and grow out individually, so I'm trying to find the point of diminishing returns, where potting up additional seedlings stops giving me new and interesting results, but my math background is inadequate. Is there an Android app for this?

I want to do something like "Airplane mode" only for biking. I want to be able to toggle a group of settings every time I go for a bike ride, without having to check each one individually. The goal would be to press one button at the start of the ride and then undo it all at the end. [more inside]

How do I earring as a grown up?

I stopped wearing earrings for a couple years due to grabby baby hands, and now my ears hate me whenever I try again. I haven't bought earrings since high school, either, so I think I need to level-up from Claire's. What kind of earrings should I buy, and from where? I just want simple studs or hoops, is there some kind of basic earring supply website in 2016 where I wouldn't need to buy in bulk?

Google maps always gives suggestions from the wrong country

I live in Australia. When I start typing an address or landmark into my android phone on the google maps app, the top suggestions Google gives until my typing is complete are 99% NZ places, mostly from the parts of New Zealand I visit once a year or so. And then I often accidentally click on one instead of the correct address. It's driving me crazy. Has anyone seen this sort of behaviour before? How can I make it stop? [more inside]

Where to send my grandfather's memoir?

I recently finished editing my grandfather's memoir and I'm wondering what institutions may be interested in a copy. He is a German Jew (b. Halberstadt) who left for San Francisco in 1934. Topics: his early childhood (family life, local businesses, Jewish life/education, shifts under Nazi regime), the voyage, a good deal about growing up in San Francisco in the 30s and 40s, some WWII Army engineer anecdotes of France/Belgium, Berkeley in the 50s, the technology industry, MIT in the 60s, and more. Help me establish California residency without a permanent home address.

I'm moving from the East Coast to Los Angeles in the next few weeks. It is intended to be a permanent move, but I will be staying at an Airbnb for the first couple of months while I apartment-hunt, etc. In studying the California DMV guidelines here I see that I will need to provide a residential address to print on the license (even if I use a PO Box for my mail.) Is there any way around this? [more inside]

Lodger, drunkenness, unsupervised kids, mess - ok to want him gone?

Came home this evening to a right mess in the kitchen and dining room. Book recs - Diaries and letters written by people in late middle age

I want to read journals and letters by people in their fifties and sixties. It could be anyone, anywhere, any century. I prefer good writing, and some levity. Most of all I'm looking for a sense of personality, text that brings the writer to life. The writer in his/her late middle age has lived several decades. They are settled in themselves, yet they still struggle. They look forward to years ahead, and they ponder mortality. What do they have to say? [more inside]

How intense is Harry Potter & The Cursed Child?

My kids (six and eight years old) want to see Harry Potter & The Cursed Child, but the recommended age on the website is 10 years old. I'm trying to avoid spoilers, so I'm reluctant to do too much googling on this. And I'd strongly prefer to see the play before I read the text. Name that song, episode eleventy billion and one

I can't remember the title, artist, or lyrics, so this is a shot in the dark. It was an Americana song, female sung. It was possibly more toward the Iris DeMent/John Prine end of that spectrum than the alt.country end. It was a somewhat comedic story song recounting the lust and excitement of a young couple saving themselves for marriage. [more inside]

What is this engimatic equipment buried in a stream bank?

You can view the equipment here. I took this photo of some old equipment embedded in the bank of Crane Creek in Crane, Missouri. I'm wondering if it might relate to the numerous tomato canning plants that operated there in the 1920s and 30s. It appears to be possibly a conveyor belt (?) They used those in the factories, I know.
