Roommate scammer or just flakey?

I'm in Manhattan. I am the sole long term leaseholder for my apartment. I want to rent out a room as a month to month roommate agreement. I put out a craigslist ad, and Sunday PotentialRoomie saw it and agreed to move in Monday afternoon, and pay me security and 1st month when she moved in. [more inside]

What are the hat rules?

I was raised with the expectation that men's hats* MUST come off when entering a building.** This does not appear to be true any longer, or at least isn't true for baseball caps. What's the consensus on leaving a baseball cap on or taking it off? For context, I have explained the exceptions to the rules as I was lead to understand them under the cut, and if it matters I am a 30-year-old white guy living in a city, and I'm looking for the casual-hat rules, not the formal-hat rules. Parotid gland weirdness

I've had what I thought was an enlarged lymph node in my neck for ~2 years, and am finally getting medical attention for it. I recently had a CT scan, and today the doctor's office called to request an additional biopsy w/ ultrasound. Biopsy and follow-up appts. aren't until the end of the month. I know that YANMD and TINMA, but could the hivemind help me to better understand what's going on so that I can be a more informed patient? [more inside]

Mortgage application complications: my mortgage, her investment account

My partner and I are applying for a mortgage. Our credit union will only approve me for the mortgage, though, since my partner has no recent credit history. We're fine with just putting me on the mortgage, but there's a hitch: we are planning to use part of an investment account for the down-payment, and that account is only in my partner's name. We share (JTWROS) another investment account with the same firm. If we add my name to her account now, will we raise red flags? Is there a better approach we're not thinking of? [more inside]

Cintiq through airport screening?

Can I take a Cintiq digitiser tablet through airport screening without getting it confiscated? The Cintiq requires mains power to work. (It doesn't have a battery, & was never designed to work with one). I think it's understandable that I wouldn't want to check this in as hold baggage. Need a good couch for cheap

Does this exist in Austin? I'm looking for a family-owned furniture store that sells name-brand furniture for less than the name-brand store. There's a place in the Dallas suburbs that does this. They have very little inventory, but they have the catalogs for places like Ashley, La-Z-Boy, and Bassett. Customers typically look around at those stores and then go to the mom-and-pop shop to order from the catalog. If you've seen this in the Austin area (Round Rock to San Marcos), please tell me where!

Too many interests, not enough time: how to be realistic and choose?

I am a diagnosed ADHD inattentive type (comorbid with anxiety and major depression) who has WAY too many personal pursuits, hobbies and interests. For this reason, I often feel overwhelmed and end up starting but not finishing (or continuing to seriously pursue) many of them. This cyclical behavior makes me anxious and miserable, and it fuels my procrastination tendencies. Occasionally, I will get a jolt of enthusiasm that helps me start a project and finish it, but this is really no different than any of my other impulsive behavior that is, ultimately, inconsistent rather than disciplined and habitual. I often beat myself up and tell myself I'm a failure because I do so few of the things that I talk or think about doing. I also beat myself up (less often, but enough that it's cause for concern) even when I *do* start and finish a project/pursuit - the reason being that I still didn't get all of the OTHER things done. How do I choose one or two things to really focus on deeply, and accept and be happy with those choices? How do I stop letting myself get caught up in the allure of "everything else"? [more inside]
