So my husband and I are considering an international trip (Scandinavia), and possibly renting a car. When I started googling this, it seems like a large percentage of rental cars in these countries are stick-shift. While there are some automatic transmission options, I'd want to be prepared in case a rental company screwed me and gave me a manual (I'm usually unlucky when I travel). I'm having real difficulty however finding driving school options in/near Portland, OR that will teach stick. Please help! [more inside]
My teenager has a great summer job. I'm super-thankful to the manager who hired him. I googled to see what there was to see about this nice guy and saw that he has a creative business on the side for which he is currently running a Kickstarter. Would it be creepy or manipulative if I were to kick in a little bit? He's looking for an amount in the low thousands and I would give $50. I've never met him, but he would probably figure out I'm this employee's parent.
I'm having a colonoscopy this week. The prep instructions say no food the whole day before. I would usually follow their directions, except that: [more inside]
I'm on the waiting list for an unpleasant but not life-threatening procedure, but the results might be Something Serious. So I'm obviously terrified and already prone to hypochondria. This is starting to impact my day-to-day mental functions. Scared snowflakes inside. [more inside]
Years ago I read the first installment of a serial story in one of my mother's magazines, and I've always wondered how it ended. Hoping someone can help point me to its source, or tell me how it ended. [more inside]

My dad is dying of cancer. I live a very long way away and have a small baby with health complications who probably shouldn't be flying just yet. Should I go sooner to see my dad before he gets too bad and leave my little baby behind? Should I wait for the all clear to travel with the baby and risk my dad getting really sick or dying without me seeing him? [more inside]
I'm in stansted. Ryanair have messed up. My flight, so I either go home or go elsewhere. What's the cheapestflight, coolest to a euro using country? Also interney is flaky. Making searches hard
I'm in a new place, and my daughter just pushed the privacy lock on the bathroom door before closing it (she is outside the bathroom, thankfully). With most of these knobs you can just push something through the hole to pop it, but that is not working. There are no keys over the doorframe. There are no exposed screws on this side of the knob. The door hinges are on the other side of the door. Please help! [more inside]
Can you recommend a natural-beauty vacation locale that will be warm over (American) Thanksgiving? International destinations are fine but total travel time needs to fit into 5 days. Snowflakes: no (or not just) beaches, hiking should accommodate a range of fitness levels.

We love kids' movies; hate watching a movie in a theatre with kids. Does anyone know any place offering a child-free showing of Finding Dory?
My ten-year old son wants to understand everything. He is a voracious reader and doesn't confine himself to kids books. He loves reading the newspaper (NYTimes, Boston Globe), fiction, and non-fiction books. He's old enough to really learn things by reading. Agatha Christie is fun, but he's ready for more than that. He's full of questions about society, politics, science, economics. I'd like to get him some books that will expand his mind, begin answering his questions, and show him how the world fits together. Yesterday, I ran across the proverb "Great cry and little wool, as the devil said when he sheared the hogs," along with the explanation that this came from "an old mystery play, David and Abigail, based on 1 Samuel." Where/when was this mystery play performed, and is its text available? [more inside]
Hi, we have guests visiting us in Minneapolis for the 4th of July holiday weekend. We've got a minivan and designated driver and we'd like to drive around and visit a number of small breweries/brewpubs tomorrow. We took them to Indeed, Fulton, and 612 last time they were in town. Where should we go? Surly seems like an obvious possibility, but where else?
Hello! My baby is having a birthday party, and I noticed that most kid birthday parties include goody bag giveaways filled with all kinds of crap. I don't really want to gather a bunch of cheap things, and instead would like to give one nice gift for kids to take home. Any suggestions? [more inside]
I live in a split level house where the bottom floor is partially below ground. In several areas, there is a concrete protrusion (part of the foundation) that sticks out from the wall, along the floor. The builders covered some of the areas, but not all. I am a home improvement noob. How do I cover these concrete ledges easily? [more inside]

I got stuck in the elevator of my apartment for ~30 minutes today. It has been acting weird for months so I put in a maintenance request and called our office to say it needed to be fixed because we're all scared we will be stuck one day. This was a couple of months ago that I complained. I don't know if it was ever fixed. Well, now I actually got stuck in it! [more inside]

I am looking for recommendations for websites/ blogs that feature photo-heavy articles on classic and vintage automobiles. I already follow Petrolicious. I wouldn't mind something that skews a little more American muscle from the 80's and prior, but any and all recommendations from any genre are welcome.

Going to Oslo, Norway tomorrow at short notice - what is the least worst option for getting Norwegian currency with the current terrible state of British sterling? I'm about to be in Miami working at the comic convention from the 29th to the 5th. I'll be working at the Miami Beach Convention Center, staying at the Hyatt Regency on 2nd, and for every day but the 5th will only have a few hours free in the evenings. On the 5th I need to be in Ft. Lauderdale by 3, but I have the morning free. I am expecting to dislike Florida in a multitude of ways, but want to remain open minded and have fun and learn something despite that. [more inside]
I am departing this Friday (three days!) for a three week trip to Guatemala, the first two weeks of which will be spent at Escuela Montana. Hooray! Then my dad got involved. Uh-oh! One of the casters in my bedframe fell off, and the bare metal of the bedframe gouged out a chunk from my floor (pictures here ). The floor isn't hardwood, it seems like some kind of engineered wood product with a veneer of grain on top. Any ideas of how I can repair this, or am I a dingus who just lost his security deposit?
SonR got a new laptop for college when the old hand-me-down he had been using died. So, we're looking for a new sturdy bag. Most bags for 15" laptops don't fit. We've looked at office/business stores (OfficeMax/Staples/uni bookstore) and perused old Asks but most bags are too small or feel/look flimsy. [more inside]
I’m trying to set up DashClock on my spiffy new Samsung S7. I am running into trouble because the instructions say I’m supposed to make sure that “Enable Widgets” setting is enabled, but I can’t find that setting anywhere. All the instructions I find also say that I should swipe to the left, a plus sign will appear, and then I click on that to add DashClock to the lock screen. However, no matter how much I swipe to the left, no big plus sign appears. Thoughts?

I went to summer camp in northern Minnesota in the late 80s/early 90s. I was exposed to all kinds of awesome music there from kids all over the country, which was a huge big thing for young midwestern me. I remember sitting on a cold lake beach listening intently to a mix tape one of the older girls was playing, and there is a song that has stuck in my head ever since. The chorus is something like "So wave goodbye to everything you knew." I can still noodle it out on piano and guitar, but I can't identify the song. Please help. [more inside]
