I recently bought my first piece of art (yay!), which looks like this, but I don't know how to hang it up. It's about 41" x 41", with a wood frame, and it's fairly heavy. On the back are two heavy-duty rails about 5.5" long each, one in each corner at the top (closeup here and here) that are to be used for hanging. [more inside]

My 87 year old Dad is awash in medical bills. He'd like not to spend most of his time filling them out. Is there the equivalent of an accountant, but who fills out medical paperwork? Where would I find such a person? (He's in New York City.)
I'm trying to remember the name of a movie I saw when I was young. It was the first movie I saw by myself at a theater so it must have been late 80s, and was probably rated PG. What I can remember of the plot (spoiler alert, I guess), a young boy is kidnapped by a much older man who takes him on the road. The boy is resistant at first but eventually forms a bond with his kidnapper, maybe seeing him as a father figure. The law eventually catches up with them and somehow they end up in the water (a lake?) where the kidnapper is wounded (shot?) and eventually, I assume, dies. That's all I've got. Any ideas? I'm sure it's NOT "A Perfect World", although the plot sounds similar.

I have a front basket on my bike in which I sit a portable speaker connected by cable to my mp3 player. I've gone through a few portable speakers, and in each case the sound begins to cut out in various ways after a couple of months of riding my city's sometimes bumpy streets. Is there anything I myself, or a technician, could do to the jack socket inside the speaker to prevent this from happening? [more inside]

In late May, I will spend a week with my family in Italy (Rome, Florence, Venice) and then I'm going by myself to the Loire Valley to gawk at castles. Where should I stop for a day or two in between: Nice, Marseille, Lyon? [more inside]
I'm completely stumped and hoping that Ask MeFi can help. There is an amazing play in which two women have a sword fight, making catty comments back and forth. One is a blonde princess type, the other a brunette seductress type. I believe the scene was taken from a larger play, but I mostly recall it from a book about sword fighting. I'm pretty sure the title was Name and Name and that the last name started with a Z. Zoltair? Zanitar? [more inside]
What did they use in China, particularly in Cantonese speaking regions, to romanize names around the turn of the century? How did foreigners choose how to transcribe Cantonese names in the Latin alphabet back before the 1920s? [more inside]

I'm looking for book recommendations that will get me as close to an experience as reading Tolkein as possible. I haven't read much fantasy for at least 15 years, but I have a pretty good sense of what I like. I want: a huge world with an ancient mythology, as big a sense of history, language, culture, as possible. I don't want: much violence or thrilling action, I don't care much about characterization or story beats, or accessible writing. Really, as close as I can get to a dense anthropological examination of fantasy world's geography, myth, and legend as I can get. [more inside]
The pipe that's going to the drain of my kitchen sink has come unattached from the drain. Surely I can fix this myself? [more inside]

I'm moving from New York City to the West Coast and I have a lot of stuff. I couldn't be less interested in driving a truck myself. I keep hearing about "pods" but I am having a hard time even finding companies to get estimates from. What should I be doing besides googling "moving pods"? [more inside]
I'm looking for more 'toy' items for my home- pleasingly tactile, not messy, not obviously kidlike (no fluorescent plastic). Something that can be picked up, fiddled with, and is aesthetically attractive enough to display on my coffee table. [more inside]
Vacuum-packed smoked trout, unopened, two weeks until expiration, but inadvertently left at room temperature for 8 hours. It says "keep refrigerated", but they must figure on SOME time to get it home from the grocery store and into the fridge — is 8 hours too long?
I'm experiencing sudden hearing loss in one ear. I'm being treated, and there is a 50 - 70% chance that it will improve. But what if it doesn't? Or what it I don't fully recover? Can the Hive Mind show me some hope? How can I manage asymmetrical hearing loss? [more inside]
I know how to move the pst files and where to find them. I know about the NK2 files and how to migrate them through versions. By hand. But . . . Is there a reliable tool that allows me to backup all the account information which is stored in the registry, together with all pst files and everything else? I install a program on Win 7 machine A running Outlook 2010 and then move a bunch of files to Win 7 machine B, run a command and when I start Outlook 2010 everything just works. [more inside]
I had a Chanel garment on eBay and it just sold to a buyer from China who has zero feedbacks. They used the Buy It Now option. I've sent out my invoice, which came to just short of $800 with shipping, and am now waiting for them to pay using PayPal. What should I do to protect myself in this transaction? Should I just cancel and relist? I am worried that I am exposing myself to negative feedback somehow.

My 5 month old baby has learnt to flip from back to front, and does so very often while he's sleeping. Unfortunately, he's not figured out how to flip from front to back yet, and that means he will suddenly start screaming away during sleeptime. This is messing up his sleep schedule, and making him wake up a lot more often that he should. Any ideas what we should do, if anything? And how does this affect any sleep training that we're planning on doing? [more inside]
I saved it in a ziploc and I put it in the "sweets and baking needs" section of my pantry. I didn't label it, which is unusual. It's not jello, it's very acidic. I would think that it's drink mix, but it's in the wrong section and in a white paper foil-lined packet. Help me out here, what else could it be?
I was dating what seemed like a guy who was very much into me but as soon as we got out of the gate, he completely changed. The breakup was very blunt and left me feeling unoptimistic about my dating future... And also made me feel very bad about myself as far as intelligence and how I feel about my appearance. I'm going to fly into San Antonio, TX, tomorrow night (Saturday) and need to pick up some groceries on my way to a remote residency. I'm a vegetarian, so I'd prefer Whole Foods/Trader Joe's but I'm scheduled to arrive at the airport at 8:50pm with checked luggage and a rental car hire so I think I'm going to miss both closings (10pm/9pm respectively). Any other good stores with natural/vegetarian offerings and a 24 hour grocery in the region (maybe a Super Target)? Ideally on the way or not too far off the route from San Antonio to Medina?

Kitteh is 17 and going strong, except that he's lost three pounds in the past several months. His vet has prescribed special food. Asking for a co-worker. She brought in a vintage toy that is a tall, tan-colored "person" with a beak-shaped face and a bulging belly. The hands are cupped as if the character used to hold something. And the body is bobbly - think of a bobble-head doll, but instead the whole body is on springs while the legs are stationary. [more inside]

I'm trying to send a Powerpoint file to a client, and their corporate security settings are making things difficult. The file is too big to email, even if I split it into fewer slides. Their security prevents them from downloading a file from Dropbox (and presumably similar services). Their email server also blocks zip attachments. [more inside]

I've got 2 nights in Berlin, then 2 nights in Hamburg, then 3 nights unbooked before I fly back out of Berlin - where should I spend them? This is around the start of May. I like cities, interesting places, staying in hostels, don't have a huge amount of money. (I've not been to Berlin before and it's possible the answer is "more Berlin").
I want to buy a house (in SE England - within commuting distance of London - so I'm having terrific fun, obviously). I found a nice converted pub that's in my price range; I've been for one viewing, liked it, and will be going back for another viewing on Saturday. It's a recent conversion of what looks to be a rather old building. Is there anything particular I should be looking out for or asking the agent about, in addition to the standard things I'd check for in any older house? [more inside]
I have moderately severe pain in the proximal tendon area of my vastus medialis for about seven months. It manifests when I raise my leg in bent or straight position. Does anyone have suggestions for physio-therapeutic exercises or any other treatment? Thanks.

One of my Stats II homework questions is: "Five groups are being compared, with 13 observations per group. The value of the F statistic is 1.61. Obtain the P-value of the test." I found an online calculator but won't have access to that during tests. Is there a way to find this on the TI-89? [more inside]

With the data I have, this will always return a single result. [more inside]
