I need help finding a specific type of book.

When I was a kid, there seemed to be a million of a certain type of romance novel on the market. They would be less "romantic" and more "dramatic" and "sordid", the type of books that would have, say, a pale pink cover with a picture of a tiger lily and a string of pearls, with titles like "deception" written in swooshy letters. Songs to sustain my euphoric panic

Just lost my job yesterday. On the one hand I'm shitting because, now what? But on the other hand WHEE!! I don't have to deal with that anymore. I found that turning the volume way up for Reckoner, recommended by queseyo earlier, is working well to push down the bubbles of panic. I'll have to deal at some point, but what else can I listen to to carry this, I dont give a fuck right now, vibe?

Seeking journal article to state the obvious

It seems to be common knowledge that elderly people, or others who are subject to more falls, will sustain more fractures than the rest of the population, and will have increased morbidity as a result. What I am looking for is an authoritative journal article (abstract or title is fine), preferably from an orthopaedic publication, stating the above. [more inside]

YANMTA. You are not my tax accountant.

Am I saving enough for taxes from my second job? I live in the US and have no state income taxes. My main job is W2. I make around $56k and usually end up close to even on my Fed return. I now have a second job that's 1099. I get paid $150 a week and set aside $50. Is this probably enough for Fed (income/SS) taxes?

Let's Travel Alone...Together

Solo traveling mefites! Have you found active travel tours that tend to learn a little to the younger crowd. I'm not trying to find a singles-ready-to-mingle tour, but would hike with folks who are more excited about the hike than the souvenirs. I'm comfortable traveling solo to most places - but, who wants to go on a safari solo? Ideas for companies or feedback from those who have taken REI-type travel tours would be great! How to not freak out while waiting to see a doctor?

I have had some weird blood test results lately. My doctor is not sure what it's from, but said that worst case scenario would be leukemia. She wants me to see a hematologist but the soonest available appointment is till over a week away. I have always suffered from pretty severe hypochondria/health-anxiety/whatever, and the fact that my doctor mentioned the L word, and the uncertainty and waiting, not to mention the absolute worst timing, is killing me. I can barely work or sleep. [more inside]

What do you do when reason fails?

(Or, How I Learned Not to Meddle With the Affairs of Others) Someone is incredibly angry with another party, and you are caught in the middle. You may not know the entire picture, but you've seen enough to conclude that the Angry Person is letting his emotions get the best of him, even if he occasionally raises some good points. You have tried reasoning with Angry Person but he just dishes out comeback after comeback. You are exhausted with the drama and it seems like Angry Person has just begun gaining momentum. Venice, the city built on water

We're planning a trip to Venice. I am fascinated by the fact that they built an entire city in a lagoon and am somewhat flabbergasted that I haven't been able to find a single place in the city where I can see a model or an exhibit that explains the construction. What's this site where you suggest a question to accompany an image?

I stumbled across a site a few weeks ago which would put up an image of some sort and ask you to write what question came to your mind. Just replace the O2 sensor?

Ipad mini case with integrated plug protectors

I really enjoy my iphone case because of the integrated plug protectors (if they were separate little plastic thingees, I would lose them almost immediately. I also have a replacement iPad mini as I just used one of my AppleCare instances for "corrosion on the dock connector and headphone connector". I don't get my devices wet, but sometimes they do go through humidity swings. Thus, I am looking for a case for my iPad mini with integrated plug protectors like the iphone case I linked to. Can you recommend any foreboding, surreal texts?

I'm looking for fiction and non-fiction texts (video, audio, and books) that take what is ostensibly a very real situation and find a surreal perspective. Research showing that *any* office rearrangement improves productivity?

Some years ago, I read about a study on workplace productivity, set up to test the effect of a new office layout (or perhaps some other physical feature of work environment). They changed to the new layout, and productivity jumped up. Over the following months, however, productivity tailed off to the original levels. So they changed the layout back to the original one. Again, productivity spiked suddenly and gradually declined back to the baseline. It was concluded that, whatever the relative merits of different office arrangements, the very act of making a change causes a temporary productivity increase. Does anyone know where I can find this study? [more inside]

How to find cheap legal services for people who don't have good cases?

Because of the way nonprofits work, it seems most legal aid organizations receive their grant funding only for successfully defended cases - which means that some of them seem to cherrypick which cases they accept, sorting for the most winnable rather than those in the most need. Are there any that don't do this? How do I find places for people with bad or unwinnable cases, but who still need legal help? [more inside]

What was that novel that mentions grissini as a sexual metaphor?
