While I was away, someone caused some minor damage to a corner of the house with their truck (chipped/cracked masonry, missing mortar, etc). My neighbour dealt with the initial incident, and I have the culprit's insurance details, and will be initiating a claim. Having not claimed on my house policy before, do I need to contact my insurance as well? Or do I just go through the insurance of the person who caused the damage? Thank you!

Recently moved to South Bend IN from Southern MN. In MN there were plenty of local parks and areas that allowed foraging on their land. Around here it seems every single park disallows foraging. Outside of just going to random people (I don't really know anyone around here) and asking to forage on their land are there any areas that allow for open foraging? I've been seeing ramps coming up and it kills me knowing I can't take them.

Recently, I've heard noise in my attic only near the wall in the bedroom. It sounded kinda like marbles at first but when i moved closer it sounded a bit like scurrying but hard to tell. It was only from about 4-6am. No noise before midnight when I go to sleep or after 6. In the past, I've heard some thumps in that area outside the house like something jumping down but it could be just something outside. No visible openings on the side of the house. Anyone have a clue what animal it could be?

I'm looking for a particular comic strip--a web-only comic, I'm pretty sure. The plot, more or less, opens with a small child tormenting an animal (cat? dog? mouse? can't recall). The child grows up, becomes an upstanding member of society, a model citizen, an all-around gem of a human being. He eventually dies of natural causes, and--hello, plot twist!--goes to hell, which consists of a cat/dog/mouse torturing him for eternity. I'm googling my damned fingers off here, and can't track this comic down. Any help?

My neighborhood is full of buskers in the summer. Some are excellent musicians. Some are easy to ignore. Some of them can't hit two notes in a row, and sing the same five songs over and over. I generally ask them nicely to move a block away, but some won't do it. Unfortunately, I can't work in the presence of off-key singing. I would like a powerful boombox to play Louis Armstrong at them until they move away. Recommendations? Bonus points if it pairs easily with an iPhone.

A friend of the family is dying, and soon. She was diagnosed recently with cancer and given days to live. She is in her home and aware, but under hospice care. Rather than send flowers when she's dead I thought I should send them now while she is alive to know we are thinking of her. What should I put in the card? I'm leaning towards just "Thinking of you" and our names. Any better suggestions for the card?

I'm trying to find an article by some historians that posited that the places described in the Bible we not actually in present day Israel. The historians had done some theorizing that the mountains and valleys mentioned in the bible (can't remember which book) fit better with an area in Saudi Arabia off the coast of the Red Sea. I've searched the Google but can't find any mention of this theory. I would love to find it again. Thanks, MeFi!

I have difficulty interacting comfortably with people I see as authority figures, like professors and senior figures in the legal profession. (My job requires me to do both pretty often - I'm a junior academic and my research involves talking to judges and lawyers). I sometimes get the sense I make them feel uncomfortable by being awkward/ overly deferential / stammering etc and, more often, even when an interaction seems to have gone smoothly, I'm deeply uncomfortable and anxious myself. What do I do to get over this? [more inside]

Our daughter is looking at both Bowdoin and Middlebury for college this coming year. She's got a pretty good idea of what they're about academically but not much of an idea of how campus life (physical campus, social life, student body mix) might differ. Anyone with knowledge (of both care to offer a comparison? We live in Seattle and visited Middlebury during the summer (no students) and have not seen the Bowdoin campus, so her direct experience is very limited. [more inside]
Help! Own a condo; HOA told us the wood porches would be painted this week after a spray wash. Workers just began to spray bleach everywhere on the wood to kill black mildew (wood was untreated after porches built 4 years ago). Concerns: 8 months pregnant asthmatic (me), our partly-tamed feral cat who spends much time on the porch, and a host of plants. I just watched as bleach misted down from the above porch coating everything on my porch. Help! [more inside]

What I'd like to do is crawl a list of 5000 to maybe 10,000 max URLs on a weekly basis, searching for a couple of specific terms. I don't see a way to set that up with Google Custom Search. I have access to server space and am comfortable enough with PHP or Python to configure a dB and script if needed. There are countless options out there. Anybody have specific experience to point me in the right direction?
That's basically the question. I'm not a gamer AT ALL but decades ago I enjoyed two games, Ceremony of Innocence and Myst and haven't played since. I'm now in the possession of a new three day old 13 " MacBook Pro and thought I'd take advantage of the retina graphic aspect of it with a visually stunning game. Games with riddles and puzzles and stories like the above, the first one in particular are the only ones I've enjoyed. Do you know of any others?
