Baby, you can tow my car.

Is AAA worth the money? I recently started a new job with a significantly longer commute (~50 miles/day roundtrip, mostly freeway) and am considering joining AAA because Pittsburgh is ranked 6th in nation for "most likely to get in an accident." [more inside]

"Girl Games" have got to go...

My 5 year old daughter has "screen time" when I come home from work while I'm making dinner. She used to watch sesame street or other recorded pbs shows, but isn't interested in that anymore. I provided her with some ask metafilter sourced web game options, but now she likes to play a ton of "girl games" on shady websites that involve things ranging from facepainting to baby care to dental work and plastic surgery, ick. Help me decide what to do about it. [more inside]

How strictly does Indonesia enforce passport validity rules?

So I just bought a ticket to Indonesia for a couple weeks out to discover that there's a rule saying I need six months left on my passport, an American one. State Department website says that landing with less than six months could get one sent back or that airline could refuse boarding. I have five months left on my passport as an American living in China. Does anyone have any experience with this? [more inside]

How does classical rhetoric relate to prose fiction?

When I think of Wilde's or Dickens' prose, I think of classical rhetorical techniques such as paraprosdokian and chiasmus--and of course countless others. I'm looking for sources that analyze prose fiction--modern or canonical--according to models of classical rhetoric. Internet sources would be excellent, but I might spring for a hard-copy text if it's not too expensive. Thanks.

Help me keep my closet baby warm at night!

It has come to pass that the best place for our 1 year old kid to sleep is in a crib in the walk-in closet in our bedroom. Now that the cold weather is upon us, I am looking for ideas for keeping him warm overnight. We have radiator heat throughout our drafty old house, and our bedroom tends to be one of the more poorly warmed rooms. The closet has no radiator in (or near!) it, and is therefore much colder still. To complicate this issue further, we STRONGLY prefer to keep the door to the closet nearly closed while we are in the room. Baby goes to bed around 6pm, grownups are on the scene from about 10pm onwards, and everyone is awake by 7am. He already wears layered pajamas and a sleep sack. Does anyone have any suggestions? My instinct was to find a tiny space heater that we could put in the closet, but a quick google tells me that I will kill all of my loved ones and everyone we have ever met if I do that.

Mattress Missteps: Is Ikea the Answer?

Over the past year, my girlfriend and I have suffered through a series of mattress missteps to the tune of about $2500. Looking for an old flash/shockwave puzzle game: directing traffic

I remember playing a game ages (ten years?) ago on (now defunct) bonus.com, which involved manipulating different-coloured cars using switches and other things. I played it on a desktop computer, and it used flash or shockwave. One needed to get a certain amount of cars into specific places to pass the level. The game was played from a top-down perspective. There were many levels. I think, though I may be mistaken, that the game had a person's name in the title. Can you help me find it? [more inside]

How to spend a bunch of money on my credit card to earn rewards?

I got my first rewards credit card. To get the bonus, I only have to spend $2,000 in three months, which seemed easy because my rent is $1400/month and I pay $800/month in other bills. Wrong. The problem is, I thought I'd be able to pay off rent and student loans with a credit card, but now I realize I can't. With loans, that option doesn't exist - you have to use a checking account. I can pay rent with a credit card, but there's a $70 service charge, which chips away at freeness of my free flights. [more inside]

Is it okay to walk my dog in the cemetery?

That's it really. I live near a large, park-like cemetery and I'm wondering about the etiquette of walking my dog there. It's a modern, suburban cemetery which is quite, um, active. If I were to take my dog there, he would be leashed at all times and if I saw a funeral actually occurring I would keep far away. Would if be upsetting if a person was at the cemetery to visit the grave of a loved one and they saw me casually walking the dog as if it were any other place?
