EtiquetteFilter: A business partner's wife handed me a gift for my wife on my latest visit. Said business partner is from (and lives in) the Middle East, same goes for his wife. Their family background is muslim, though they are not really practicing it. I hardly know his wife (met her only twice) and both of them don't know my wife at all. What is the meaning of such a present? Should we give her a present in return? If so, should it be more or less costly than the one for my wife (they are wealthy, far more than I am).
Is it considered very unusual in the US for people to keep their own surnames when they get married? Does this lead to misunderstandings or problems in everyday life, or is it totally OK/commonly accepted for wife and husband to have different surnames? [more inside]
A silly question, but how do I use those U-shaped neck pillows? I know I'm supposed to put the wider part (bottom of "U") behind my neck, but this pushes my chin down and as I have no support for it on the front (top of "U"), my neck hurts even more than if I just let my head loll around. This is likely a dumb question. :) But I have this little microwave. Both the glass turntable and the plastic wheel thing are broken. The microwave itself works fine and heats things up. Short of dripping stuff down into the motor enclosure where the wheel+turntable would normally sit, can I use this microwave normally long-term with no worries? I'm assuming that the only difference is the food would be unevenly heated (I could manually turn), but I just wanted to make sure the turntable motor business wasn't connected to anything else. Replacements would cost more than the microwave at this point.
