How to be more productive while I turn my brain off?

I want to be more productive while I turn my brain off. I seem to get good thinking done if I can occupy my hands and a very small part of my brain on a task, while the rest of my brain is free to wander. Right now I do this with mindless iPhone games, but I get headaches and this is not good for me and I want to do something useful if I can. [more inside]

Young adult/kids' book featuring death of everyone over age 12?

Help me find a book I read as a kid so I can give it as a gift to the kids in my life. Premise, as best I can recall: Everyone over the age of 12 dies of a disease, and so all the kids on earth are in a post-apocalyptic, quasi Lord of the Flies situation. Except they're not on some random island. They're in their own homes, in cities and wherever they live. Children must learn to drive cars. A girl is the protagonist; she's the leader (of her local group?). I vaguely remember conflict and danger but not the details. My copy was paperback, and the cover might've featured the girl standing in front of some ruined looking stuff and scared kids behind her.

[medicalfilter] Looking for radiation therapy for early-stage Dupuytren's in New York - can you recommend someone? I'm a 30 year old recently diagnosed with Dupuytren's in both hands. It's progressing somewhat rapidly (not surprising, given my age) but has not yet interfered with functionality. I am looking for radiation oncologists who can offer the radiation treatment for this in the New York area. I'd love to hear from patients who've had this treatment, but will take any oncology recs you have! [more inside]

Why is pulse taken at neck or wrist instead of the heart?

Why do we typically take our pulses at the neck or wrist as opposed to the chest or side right at the heart? At least from my n = 1 self-observations, it's both an order of magnitude stronger and easier to find if you just stick your hand on your chest and count off that instead of trying to find the right spot on the neck or wrist. Six weeks of volunteering?

My new job starts August 1. From about June 13 to July 28, I'll be in Boston with nothing to do. It's a big block of time, and I have money saved from past jobs, so I've been thinking of volunteering in Haiti or on the Gulf Coast. Is there a good way to do either of these things? Is there cool stuff for me to do locally instead? (I do know about Boston Cares, but they would send me to a different place every day and I'd prefer more committed work if it's available.)

Is Jersey City to Somerset a reasonable commute?

Want to know about how long (and how bearable) it would be commuting from Jersey City, NJ to Somerset, NJ 5 days a week for work. Has anyone done it? Any thoughts on how 'sustainable' a commute it is? I am mostly concerned with the day-after-day effects of driving this distance. My commute now is via subway and is about 30 minutes each way, including walking.
