How do you actually make money off of web-based software?

I'm a web developer with enough proven abilities to develop good stuff that end users like. I'm employed, but want to start a business with a couple of friends with complementary skill sets in the technical side of things. We'd like to create one or more web-based products used by small-to-mid-size businesses and/or individual consumers, paid for on a monthly basis using a "software as a service" model. We've got more than enough combined development and graphical/UX design abilities, but we have no solid product ideas that we feel confident enough about to start doing the enormous amount of work involved in any of them. The main problem with any idea we get is this question: how on Earth do you convince anybody to pay you money for the product? [more inside]

How can we get 800 litres of hot water in the UK within twelve hours?

Can you recommend a way for me to heat a large amount of water quickly at a venue that does not have a reliable boiler? I am involved in a UK event where we will have a hot tub. Unfortunately we can't get access to the venue until the morning of the event, meaning that the usual 24-48 hour period to use the tub's own heater is not an option. I have sourced a few potential solutions but am hoping the hive mind will help me narrow them down or suggest others. [more inside]

Star Wars fan edits, which and how?

Star Wars Episodes I, II and III disappoint me. For me, the they're in love with scenery and expense and try to make up for it with plodding exposition. They need editing. I think I would enjoy something like The Phantom Edit. But how do I get ahold of it? Is it the best edit? Are there other fan edits of I, II and III that are worth seeking out? And how do I get and watch them?

Best way to take wife in labour to St Georges Hospital from Wimbledon, London?

Best way to take wife in labour to St Georges Hospital from Wimbledon, London? I don't have a car so I could rent streetcar but how long will I be there -- could be expensive and there's problems with parking etc... Take a cab maybe? Would minicabs or black cabs deliver women in labour to hospital -- I can imagine they might be concerned perhaps? Coming back we'll need to have a car seat of course so I need to be sure that the return journey supports the kind of baby car seat we are looking to get (ISOFIX?). Ambulance -- of course when there's an emergency :)

How can I control my online shopping addiction?

I am addicted to buying clothes online. Every time there's a sale for anything (15% off, free shipping etc.), I feel compelled to take advantage of it and buy whatever I want. I rationalize my behavior, thinking "oh, I'm saving myself money in the long run by buying these clothes now, rather than later when there's no sale." Or I'll say, "If I don't buy it now, they'll run out of stock, and then I won't have this beautiful item." What can I do, say to myself, or change in my behavior, to prevent my online shopping sprees? If you see an item you like online that's just a convenient click away from being yours, what is the checklist you go through, mentally, before deciding to purchase/not purchase it? How do you keep your clothing budget under control?

You built a time machine... out of a '74 SAAB wagon?!

I'm considering going back to the good old days, when cars were simple and could be easily repaired by a competent home mechanic with basic tools. Problem is, I'm a SAAB junkie and the particular older car I'm considering (the 1970's era 95 wagon with the V4 Ford engine) is rare & quirky. Am I crazy to be considering a rare Swedish antique for basic transportation? Do I have the right idea but the wrong car? Help me, MeFi greasemonkeys! [more inside]
