Supply the product for this commercial

I am trying to locate/remember a commercial that is currently airing nationally for a tech product or service. I have seen it around 5 times but I don't want to wait for it to serendipitously pop up again. Help me remember the product that goes a long with the commercial I describe below. (I'm not interested in purchasing the product or anything, I only want to examine the ad.) [more inside]

How to get hollywood in the backwoods?

I'm looking for a low cost timecode slate. Which is this But instead of costing $1200 or so and being a dedicated piece of equipment. Maybe something more like this. Though I don't have an iPhone so that program is out. Does anyone know of one that runs on Windows, like a tablet PC? or maybe one that was self built from a microcontroller (arduino, stamp, etc) SMPTE can be read by the Arduino so it might be possible. Thanks.

The realism of The Wire Season 2

I'm currently in the process of rewatching The Wire for the third time, and there is something that has been bugging me about season two for a long time (there are no real spoilers in this question, btw). The second season is thematically all about "the death of the American blue-collar worker", in this case the stevedores working at Baltimore harbor. But this doesn't ring true to me. I mean, yes, American industrial production is plummeting in favor of countries with cheaper labor (like China), but doesn't that mean that the US has to import more stuff? And clearly it is. And most of those imports comes in by boat. So why isn't the harbor be prospering? [more inside]

Yup, another book-recommendation post.

Now that I finally have some free time on my hands (research proposal is in, huzzah!) I'm looking for something to read that is not affiliated with my degree. The academic in me adores footnotes in fiction. Also, books that blend genres, and particularly ones that feature strange/big cities. I usually read urban fantasy/weird/new weird/steampunk. The following elements make me take notice: magic, science, esotericism, religion, myth, historical influence. Not a big fan of comedy. [more inside]

Wedding Song Search

We're putting together a playlist of older, romantic, fun songs (that's amore, fly me to the moon, baby its cold outside, etc) for our wedding. There's a song I've heard once on pandora, but can't seem to find now. 40s or 50s era sound, sort of swingy, female singer, all I remember was the lyrics were a list of places, followed by "but I love to be with you" - or something very similar. ie "I love the beach, I love the sand... but I love to be with you." Does anyone know what it was? (And any other suggestions for songs happily received!)

I'm Leaving For China With No Plans: I Need Some Plans!

My son wants me to ride trains and hike with him, starting this weekend, all over China. He says he wants to leave Beijing (I arrive exhausted on Thursday night) on Sunday and go, over the next 17 days, to visit Xuchang, Xi'an, Chengdu, Jiuzhaigou, Kunming, Tiger Leaping Gorge, Guilin, Yangshou, Suzhou, and FengHuang; then back to Beijing so I can go home. Can we do it? We have no itinerary. Shouldn't this be pared down? Where should we go? What travel websites can I use on my iPhone or at internet cafes? How can I find cheap airfare within China, with no advance reservations, and do it on the fly? This post is as "quick and dirty" as is my planning. Now, I have to get back to packing ultralight for monsoon territory. I'm too old for this, but am excited! [more inside]

iPhone app to open and edit Excel documents

iPhoneAppFilter: I have an Excel document on my home computer that I would like to be able to open and edit on my iPhone while I'm out and about, on an ongoing basis. The catch: app needs to be able to handle "index" and "match" functions. Without this functionality, the app would be useless to me. List of previous disappointments: DropBox (can't edit), QuickOffice (interfaces with DropBox but can't do index/match functions), Calc Lite (can't open document). I have zero programming skills and not that much more cash. Is my dream app (or combination of apps) out there?

Out Stealing Horses

I don't understand a seemingly important part of "Out Stealing Horses" by Per Petterson. Did you have years out of my life that I should have lived?'" If someone has read the book and can explain what Trond means here, I'd be grateful!

Basic audio interface for Intel iMac

I do occasional audio recording with GarageBand. I just recently upgraded from a G4 tower to an Intel iMac w/Snow Leopard. I settled for analog audio in through the mic input on the G4 but I think I want to step up to digital input. I have an analog mixer, tube preamps, effects pedals, etc. so I don't need to have them in the audio interface. Midi I/O would also be nice but not necessary. What are my choices in a basic 2-channel Firewire(800)/USB(2.0) audio interface?
