What to do on a rainy beach vacation?

My wife and I are visiting Wildwood, NJ this weekend for our anniversary, but the weather forecast looks like rain the whole time. My wife loves the beach so she's pretty bummed out about it. What are some great ideas to salvage several rainy days at the beach?

What does it take to author and illustrate kids books?

My wife and I are interested in writing and illustrating kids books and getting them published. I realize there are plenty of neat books great illustrations, so what's the best way to find out what we'd be getting into if we were to pursue this as a hobby, or even as a main source of income?

What to do with $1000USD

A charity gave me $1,000 USD they raised for me after a drunk driver wiped me and my motorcycle out. I am 56 yrs. old, sick from cancer and will be losing my job in December. I have little savings and will have to work at whatever my body lets me do, and probably lose my health insurance. I plan on selling my home and its contents and downsizing to a studio apartment. I have no credit card debt but hold two mortgages, both will be a wash at the sale. What is the best bang for my buck for this $1000 in this economy? A CD? Online savings account? Any suggestions?

Count the pumping events

I need to count how many times a sump pump runs in a given period. The sump pump pumps water out of a hole on the ground, it is activated by a float switch - so generally speaking it pumps the same amount of water out each time it runs (the volume of water from the top 'on' level to the lower 'off' level). I want to know how much water is being pumped per week/month/whatever. [more inside]

Lately I seem to be losing a lot of things - the screws for a chair, the screws I bought to replace them, a screwdriver to put them in, a cheese grater, now my wallet. I haven't really had a losing things stage since I was a kid. Confirmation bias, or is there something wrong with me?

Wonky Air Conditioner: Any HVAC People Out There?

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with LG Multi-zone air conditioners? We have a multi-zone system that has been working fine until recently. Is health care a Ponzi scheme?

Is health care a Ponzi scheme? I'm trying to work out my feelings about the health care debate, and our moral obligations to take care of each other. Will improved health care just lead to larger populations and longer life spans, and more and more expenses to take care of them all? Am I a bad person for thinking this?
