Planning a road trip from RI to Los Angeles

Hi everyone! My sister, father, and I are planning a road trip this summer from Rhode Island to Los Angeles and we're looking for some itinerary suggestions. We were planning on taking the northern route, hitting Chicago, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, State Route 1, etc. but we don't really have any details laid out. We plan to take 10-11 days, starting on August 20th. Additionally, we would love to do some camping on the way. Thanks :D !!!

Name that sci-fi short story

Inspired by a recent question, I'm looking for a sci-fi story I read many years ago - bits i remember : guy put in some form of hibernation after the-end-of-the-world, robot looking after him, re-seeding life on Earth from grass seeds in his clothes, probably from some kind of young adult collection, the robots colonise the galaxy.

What am I missing here, to get this thing fired up and online?

I bought a new laptop today, an inexpensive Compaq. I've not opened the box yet, don't want to run the thing without a decent anti-virus anti-malware etc and etc, on the machine and operative -- I figure I'll use my existing puter to download the latest AVG onto a USB stick and install it onto the Compaq before getting online. Also intend to run Decrapifer software and also CCleaner to get all the gunk off the machine that I can. Question: What else do I need to do to fire up this Windows 7 machine, if anything? Also -- once cleaned up, I'd like to image the drive to a USB drive I've got, that USB drive came with proprietary software and I'm sure that'd be fine, but do you have any preference as to what drive imaging (freeware) software to use? Social science guy needs physical science info

Please help me understand the BP oil spill. I see the footage of the oil plume and wonder how wide it is when it reaches the surface. This question tells me why capping the pipe is not feasable. But what about creating a thermal column of warm(er) water to help "focus" the oil plume to a more concentrated area on the surface while the relief well is being drilled? Thanks for your explanations...

I've got the basics covered, but it would be nice to include mentions of some less-than-famous apps or tools that have been of use elsewhere. San Francisco Rotating Rooftop Vents: What are they? Why do they rotate?

I've noticed these rotating vents since I've moved to San Francisco almost 4 years ago, but never found an answer. They are on a lot of the roofs out here, and seem to rotate with the wind, but sometimes not. Do they rotate with the wind? If so, why? Is it a smell issue?
