My brother-in-law's windows XP machine has died, with a STOP error of 7e (ooooo5).. Sometimes it also references aspi.sys. Sometimes it makes it to the 'windows' screen, then hangs there loading endlessly. I suspected a rootkit because of a virus warning before it crashed, but I downloaded a couple of Linux rescue CDs and they didn't work - spitting out a variety of error messages (couldn't mount fs, init cancelled, or just a stream of hex numbers). I've also tried safe mode with and without console - it just resets without comment. The computer is very dusty, so my next step is to open it up and reseat the components after giving them a bit of compressed air - any thoughts on other stuff I could try, or components that might be at fault? I guess the motherboard is the obvious place for a problem - plausible?
I didn't get my Eurail pass before I left. Now I have a surprise week off and I'd really like one. Will I run into any problems if I buy one, have it sent to my hometown in Canada, and have my parents send it back to me in France? I have 17 days before it needs to be in my hands. [more inside]

You grew up in a loving, healthy home. Your parents were normal, in that they were imperfect and made mistakes, but did a pretty damn good job raising their children. What was the nature of their mistakes? How did they affect you? What does a good, real family look like? [more inside]

I've been using Keeper by Callpod on my iPhone to store my passwords. It's been a pretty decent software and I liked the ability to back up my data to my computer. However, they recently decided to start charging $30 / year to do what was once free. That's bogus. I'll pay a one-time fee though. A friend of mine has an Android phone and has been using Keeper and would like to switch as well. Any recommendations? Thanks.

I've lived in Boston 7 years now but never obtained proper cold weather attire, struggling along with the coat I brought from California and a cheap one I found here when I couldn't tolerate the California one anymore. Well, no more. This year I'm going to do it right. I turn to Ask MeFi because I'm hopelessly confused by the variety of options out there. [more inside]

Late last year on a visit to Montreal, I purchased some chocolate milk that did not have any added sugar or sweeteners. It was awesome. Since coming back to the US (bay area) I have not found a chocolate milk that is free of the added sweeteners. I have tried whole foods, Berkeley bowl, trader joes and safeway. Any idea what brand I got in Montreal and where I can find something similar here?
I'm considering moving in the next few months to a fairly busy avenue in Berkeley - Ashby Avenue, between Adeline Street and Telegraph Avenue. It has two lanes of traffic - one each way - and averages about 19,000 cars a day. I'm worried after reading a few articles - including Black Lung Lofts in the LA Weekly, the Children's Health Study (skimmed it, but couldn't decipher it all) they refer to and others - that living there might have bad long-term effects on my young son's health. Should I be worried? [more inside]

Install Linux or windows without a cd drive or usb just direct access to the hard drive. I have an old cf-29 toughbook by Panasonic that I've had for years. I'm trying to resurrect it and for the life of me cant remember my own cmos password. Aside from possibly nuking the bios password which will be near impossible due to the NATO standards this notebook was built to. I was thinking I would just try to install an OS directly to the hard drive and simply transplant it back into the toughbook. [more inside]

Is there a way to trace down where a script is attempting to start from on Windows XP? I had a bit of a drive-by download happen, and I mostly removed the infestation with some antispyware tools. I often write in several languages (French, Dutch, and English) and so I use multiple keyboard layouts (on Windows 7) and multiple editing languages (in Microsoft Office 2007). I find that when I have Word open and I change the keyboard setting in Windows (from US to US-International or vice-versa), Microsoft Word will change the editing language back to English (United States), Word's default language, no matter what other language (Dutch or French) I was working in at the time.
