Live bass guitar looping - how DID he do it?

A little while back I heard a bass guitar player with some kind of amazing live looping set-up - what on earth was it? I keep wondering what he was doing. All I could see was that he was grabbing (sampling) things he was playing, as he was playing them (ie while he was continuing to play), using foot pedals of some sort, and then incorporating those loops into the rest of the track. Amazing. But how?

How do movies fake party conversation noise?

I recall reading in a thread about a trick used in movies to simulate the background noise of a crowd engaged in a number of separate conversations - like a party - by having a small number of people repeat a few syllables out of sync with each other. What were the details of this?

Are Miller Indices used for anything, or are they just a convenient notation?

I am taking an intro to materials science class, and in which we have learned about Miller indices, which are a way of denoting directions and planes in a unit cell. So far we have done nothing with this other than draw directions and planes. I was wondering, is this just a notational convention or is there some reason why they are the way they are, as in does it make some more advanced math easier or something?

WTF was that?!

My fiancee and I were just now woken up by the sound of a large explosion right in our bedroom. Almost like a gunshot but not quite that loud. And I think I saw a flash of light.
