You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think

Socialism. I keep hearing this word in regards to our current health care reform. I'm fairly sure most of the people I know don't really know what it actually means (my mother, for example) - I'm not even sure I know anymore. Are there already socialized programs in the US and, if so, please give me examples I can share?

Bars on the Upper East Side of Manhattan

NYC filter: Looking for a bar on the Upper East Side (preferably east 80s/90s) which can accomodate a group of ~50-70. My high school class is having its 15th reunion, which will start off at our school and then progress to an after-party at a bar at around 9/9:30pm on a Friday in June. So a private room would work, as would a bigger bar which could simply accomodate a mass influx. Anything from divey to schmancy is a possibility. Thanks!

Help me find an essay on the proper role of a police officer?

An article (or essay? almost a manifesto?) on the proper role of a police officer, or perhaps rather, the philosophy of what a British constable is supposed to do. From I think the late 19th century. Can you find me the link?

My son has his learners permit. Now what?

using a QUERY formulate in Google Spreadsheet

Hi, I searched through the archives and did not find a match. Thank you in advance. Let's say I have a spreadsheet in Google docs with two columns, names and dollar amounts. Jane Smith, $5; Joe Sixpack, $7; Jane Goodall, $4; Joe Frankin, $10, etc. I want to use – I think – the QUERY function to ADD up all the dollars that all the Joe's have, or all the dollars that the Jane's have. I have read through as much documentation as I can find and it's not giving me enough to formulate a successful query. This:
=query(A1:B20, "Select A where (A contains 'jane')", sum(B))
does not work. Any suggestions? thank you!

Carleton v. Wesleyan

Carleton v. Wesleyan. I'll be seeing my nephew next week, and he has his future whittled down to these two colleges. Not that it will really have an effect, but I'd like to appear to know more than that it is colder in Minnesota, and asking MeFites seemed easier (and maybe more astute) than reading a lot of PR things. Neither he nor I know what he will major in, but probably nothing practical (ie. if he doesn't wind up an academic, he'll be applying to law schools sooner or later.). Any opinions or insights?

Hey London -- I have a pony request!

Hey London -- I have a pony request! No, really - a REAL pony request: American Mefite visiting has heard rumours that there are actual pony/horse rides available at some local parks. This is as far as my knowledge on the matter goes. I am an accomplished equestrian (and do tend to bounce when thrown, anyway) so, I don't want to ride a merry-go-round. Where can I find a spot to go for a ride? Would anyone like to join me?

Advice for the bride

Help me come up with some cute or funny advice for a bride-to-be. It's for one of those activities at a bridal shower where everyone writes little bits of advice in a book for her to keep, along with a recipe. How to support a grieving family.

Sadly I lost a friend to a long battle with cancer last night, her husband and teenage children are without any extended family in the area and will rely on some of us for the next while. Two things: 1 - Can you tell me of things that friends and family have done for you in similar circumstances that really helped at the time: large, small, immediately, over days, weeks, months, whatever. We'll sort out food, the pets and cleaning the house but what else can we do? 2 - Any advice on striking the right balance between giving them their space to grieve and being there to support to them?
