Mystery photograph

Does anyone know anything about this photograph? I came across it on a stranger's Tumblr site and it's completely unattributed, and no amount of Googling has turned up even a clue as to where it's from. Looks like it's out of a book (page number in the bottom right), but beyond that, I got nothin'. I'm totally intrigued by it. (Note: I've already emailed the blog owner via their Tumblr site, so please don't email them again; I don't want to harass them...) Thanks!

Need a good way to take notes in college

I really need a good note taking app for my iPad. I'm studying in the Computer Science major. I take Discrete Math, Software Design, Economics 101, and Precalculus. I'm currently using Noterize, but I don't like its lack of organization of notes. It doesn't really feel like a fully baked app. I would really prefer something that lets me type, scribble with my Pogo Sketch stylus, and also support bullet points. A really good UI would also be nice though not the most important. And third party export would be a nice plus. Are there any good apps like this?

What is this film?

There was a Yiddish film possibly made in New York in or around the late thirties with strikingly similar elements to The Jazz Singer except that it ends with the cantors son singing instead of assimilating into a new society. What was it and is there somewhere online to watch/buy the whole thing?

Can you help me find this surreal novel?

Can you help me find this surreal novel? Years ago, I saw an excerpt from it. All I remember is a scene where there was a worm in a cage, and its droppings would fall onto some kind of musical instrument, creating strange music. I think this story was written in Eastern Europe, in the beginning of the 20th century. Thanks!

Small scaled circus event, and not quite juggulo themed. How does one promote?

My boyfriend and I were sitting around one night listening to an extensive amount of circus music I had the thought... we totally need to put on a circus-themed party. We found and booked a venue with a good friend who owns a bar, booked a few performers (jugglers, contortionists, musicians, all close friends). The date is set, place booked, now for the promotion which will make or break the event. [more inside]

How do you actually make money off of web-based software?

I'm a web developer with enough proven abilities to develop good stuff that end users like. I'm employed, but want to start a business with a couple of friends with complementary skill sets in the technical side of things. We'd like to create one or more web-based products used by small-to-mid-size businesses and/or individual consumers, paid for on a monthly basis using a "software as a service" model. We've got more than enough combined development and graphical/UX design abilities, but we have no solid product ideas that we feel confident enough about to start doing the enormous amount of work involved in any of them. The main problem with any idea we get is this question: how on Earth do you convince anybody to pay you money for the product? [more inside]

How can we get 800 litres of hot water in the UK within twelve hours?

Can you recommend a way for me to heat a large amount of water quickly at a venue that does not have a reliable boiler? I am involved in a UK event where we will have a hot tub. Unfortunately we can't get access to the venue until the morning of the event, meaning that the usual 24-48 hour period to use the tub's own heater is not an option. I have sourced a few potential solutions but am hoping the hive mind will help me narrow them down or suggest others. [more inside]
