How to subsidize my internship?

Hi there, I'm currently a first-year Political Science major with a pre-law focus, and am very involved in my school's Mock Trial and pre-law fraternity. I've always wanted to work for The Innocence Project, and that's still my goal after graduation. On the internship page, it says, "We encourage using the internship to gain course credit and to seek “work-study” grants with your educational institution, if that is an option." How do I go about this? [more inside]

Why is there a fireplace in a 7th day adventist lectern?

Last night, I attended a dress rehersal of a choir my daughter will be joining. It was at a 7th day adventist church and I noticed that the lectern had a (gas-burning) fireplace set into the front facing the pews. Does this have any religious significance or is it just a quirk of this church? The choir is just renting the space for practice, so they're not a good source for info.

Where can I find pasties in NYC for a mermaid costume?

I'm trying to put together a last minute costume for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade this Saturday, and need some pasties with tassels. Ideally I'm going for something somewhat classy in an old-school burlesque style, like this, but would also settle for something basic like this, that I could decorate at home with sparkly glitter and whatnot. Because of the timing I can't shop online, so need to find a store in NYC (preferably Manhattan or Brooklyn). Any ideas, metafilter? Thanks!!

Aesthetic appeal vs. sexual attraction

I'm confused somewhat about my sexuality. It's an issue for me. Likely I'm gay and not straight. I'm wondering how can I tell apart aesthetic appeal from sexual attraction. Also, am I in denial to some point, because I'm constantly wondering over whether if I like women or not? That's why I'm wondering about the difference between aesthetic appeal and sexual attraction.

You don't hear this one every day.

I'd like to add a kitten to the family. However, I have a toy fox terrier which makes this difficult. Every cat I've had in the past would eventually begin stalking the dog, pawing him on his hindquarters and biting his neck. The dog would cower 24/7 and I ultimately needed to keep them in separate areas of the house, at all times, to protect him. I've tried various methods to prevent this, but since the last time I've owned a cat was over five years ago I'm open to re-trying anything.

What is this flying bug? [links to pics inside].

What is this flying bug? [links to pics inside]. From the file name, you can see we speculate that it is a hornet. This is possible where we are - the Ashdown Forest area of Mid Sussex, England - but it could also be a large wasp. This is relevant to us as my friend's 11 year old has had an enormous allergic reaction to a bee sting on his forehead 2 days ago, and looks like a junior albino Na'vi right now. The beast was shoo-ed by me into the gap of our double glazing, where I took these pics an hour ago. Cheers! [more inside]

Is it safe to eat maggots/mealworms?

A friend gave me some freshly picked porcini (boletus) mushrooms. Some of the bigger ones which looked fine on the outside, were almost hollow and full of bugs inside. They were squiggly white worm-like, with black heads. Either maggots or mealworms. I don't have a problem eating insects, but was wondering if it's safe to eat this particular type of bug? Thanks.

What's wrong with my riding mower?

My Craftsman riding lawn mower was belching white smoke and barely crawling forward this evening, so the lawn did not get mowed. In examining it, the air filter looks nasty, and the belt I can get to without disassembling stuff feels very loose. That belt appears to drive the blades. It's an 8 year old mower with a B&S engine The belts are original, and the air filter might be too. I don't remember when I last changed it. I change the oil and sharpen the blades in the spring and the thing just runs. It had be running OK, but a little rough, prior to today. My question - it is likely a simple tune up and new belts fixes my symptoms? If odds are it is something more complicated I'd rather just get it fixed by a pro and be done with it. I can handle the simple tune up, but if it's likely to be in vain...
