Mr. gudrun's cousins are doing medical work in Africa with the Peace Corps. They love world music, esp. African, of course, but really they like pretty much everything. We would like to get them some recent world music as a gift for Christmas (we have a quick and secure way to mail it) so please pass on your favorites.

I heard a term somewhere that referred to the modern phenomena of sounds being decoupled from what produces them, in the sense that it's no longer a one-to-one relationship between sound and thing. So whereas previously every time you heard a bark you knew it was a dog, now it could be a TV, a computer, or a robot dog. Likewise, a big professional sound system could sound like almost anything. I think the originator was an academic. I distinctly remembering seeing mention of this on wikipedia once. What was that term? Who coined it?

Herpes. I have just found out today that a very good friend of mine just found out that he has HSV-2 (genital herpes). He has never exhibited any symptoms, apparently he is what's called an asymptomatic carrier. He found out about a month ago because his new girlfriend had an outbreak (apparently she is not an asymptomatic carrier). He did some digging and figured out he probably contracted it sometime in 2006. Unfortunately, said friend and I slept together on a drunken night (when both of us were single) in spring 2007. We did not use a condom

We'll I always thought of myself as a pretty dang good computer troubleshooter, but this one really has me stumped.
My Windows XP Pro SP3 rig takes 10 seconds to display items after clicking My Computer. There is no search light in the window when opening - just blank until things show up.
I have two hard drives listed. 6 Removable storage items, 1 mapped network drive, Mozy and 2 scanners listed.
I have tried many things to speed this up: Deleted the mapped network drive. Disabled WIA in services. Unplugged and uninstalled scanners. Tried various registry hacks for stopping things like checking network drives for scheduled tasks and other things found on the internet. All with no success to here I stand with hat in hand...asking for some help with this annoying problem.

I love reading fiction, but non-fiction just doesn't hold my interest. I'd very much like it to -- I have a bunch of books I'd like to read, but I get a few pages in, and I just glaze over. Maybe it's the lack of plot? Am I doomed to reading only fiction, or can I learn to enjoy non-fiction?

Can someone recommend a nice restaurant in Toronto for my mom (age 60) and her friends?
A group of about eight of them are going to the Second City show tomorrow night, and my mom wasn't sure where they should eat.
They're looking for something near King St. (the theatre is on Mercer St.) that has a nice/classy atmosphere but won't be too fancy, as they won't be dressed up. In terms of type of food, they're not too adventurous, but would probably prefer something nicer than pub food, and not too meat-focused, as one friend is vegetarian. (Maybe an Italian place?)
