Is it simply possible that, because I have a 4-year-old Powerbook - OS 10.4.11, one month old new hard drive, memory and RAM maxed out, only used 1/4 of memory, system checked regularly with Onyx (with no problem) - I keep getting "program not responding to, especially, my Opera and Firefox browsers, as well as programs like Word, iPhoto, and iTunes? Plus, more than half the time my Powerbook won't close down when I ask it to and have to do a hard turn off, which can't be good for it. I've asked a couple of Mac forums, a Mac Genius, and my so-far trustworthy Mac guy whether having a PowerPC processor, instead of the newer Intel one, should make any difference. I got a resounding no. Still, does anyone have a contrarian and, perhaps, right, explanation? Thanks.

I want to send an email to several hundred school principals and am wondering if it is likely to be spam-filtered, given the amount of recipients. The content of the email is a clarification of some points that appeared in an educational journal (it is not spam of any kind). Would putting the addresses in the BCC box make any difference (other than hiding all the other recipients)? I'm using gmail, but Eudora is an option (although I have never used it before).

Is there a great place in Seattle that makes homemade caramel corn? In Minnesota, where I'm from, places like Candyland offer giant tins of popped corn divided into three flavors--caramel corn in one section of the tin, plain in one, cheese popcorn in the third. You can smell it all the way down the street. Surely Seattle must have a place like this, right? Extra bonus points if it's north of downtown, Ballard-Fremont-Northgate area.

I have a 2008 Mercury Mariner. Recently, all of the dashboard lights light up like a christmas tree (and stay lit) and the gauges all sweep to the end and then stop back at zero while I am driving. Once I shut the engine off, the car will not start. This does not happen all the time but enough that it left me stranded twice in the past week. I have replaced the battery. This did not help. Through trial and error, I learned if I hit the alarm button, then attempt to start the car, it will start and I will be able to drive until the entire process repeats itself. I have it at the dealer now and after 72 hours, they still have no idea what's wrong with it. The dealer has said that their diagnostic equipment is identifying "communication codes to cluster" but I have no idea what that means. Any ideas on what could be causing my mysterious Mariner problem? I am in the Northern NJ/Rockland County area (if you have any suggestions for shops to try).

I started making smoothies recently with about 200g frozen fruit, 1.5 cups of 1% milk, and a scoop of whey protein powder. I wedge some kale in when I have it, but I happened to be out this week. This makes about as much smoothie as I can comfortably consume. Normally if I eat breakfast (lentils or eggs or oatmeal or cereal or toast and jam or whatever) around 7 or 7:30, I'm good until lunch at 12 or 1 or even later, but since I switched to smoothies, I'm finding that I'm ludicrously hungry by 10am. As in "I would cheerfully kill you for the last quarter of your sandwich" hungry. WTF? Why is this and how do I fix it? [more inside]
