Hey, kids! Let's put on a show!

I'm "THAT" mom - and it's that time of year. It's time to plan the Spring Concert performance for a Kindergarten class, having a "Jungle" theme; and aside from the limitations imposed by circumstances, only one rule applies: "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" has been banned after five consecutive years of being performed in every concert no matter what the theme. Should we get a pet? Google research seems to say 'yes'.

Can pets really ease depression? My husband is suffering from work-related depression at the moment, he is seeing a therapist for this. When we were discussing getting a pet, we thought it would be best to ask the therapist before going ahead with the idea. The therapist's answer was: if you want one, get one. The problem is that we do not know if it is a good idea or not. [more inside]

Completely new to Mac/OS X. What do I need to know?

My father-in-law replaced his old Mac Mini with a newer Mac, so he asked me if I wanted the Mini. I've been a Windows guy for almost two decades (with a soft spot for Linux) but have never owned or used a Mac. Being that it's an older Mini, based on the Motorola chip and not Intel, it's not going to be the fastest thing ever, I'm sure, but I figure as something that doesn't cost me anything it's as good a way to learn about Mac as any. Seeing as I am a complete Mac virgin, I was wondering if those of you who know your way around Macs would give me a piece of advice. [more inside]

Looking for true story about adopting children with physical disabilities

I'm looking for a book I read in the mid '90's. It was a true story about a couple that adopted a bunch (8?) of kids with physical disabilities. I can't remember much about the book but I think their house had stairs and they made one child do push-ups until he could climb the stairs using only his arms. Oh, also I think they didn't have a tv. What is the title?

What men's clothing stores in the SF Bay area have salespeople who are helpful and willing to listen?

I need a fashion update. I'm in my mid forties. I know zero about fashion. Clothes bewilder me. Macy's and Nordstroms have nice clothes (I think?) but the salespeople are just kids and they don't give a rat's ass what you look like or whether they've actually helped you. In fact they're all laughing at me behind my back, obviously. Little bastards. Anyway, I need help from someone who knows what's what. [more inside]

My employer uses Websense to limit what sites we can visit. I recently discovered that is not blocked. Raiding the (probably unneeded) college savings

Should I pull the money out of my daughter's 529? She is 19. She is taking time off and is eventually planning to do a certificate program at the community college. Meanwhile we had saved up enough for an expensive four year college. Right now there is a loss on the account. Since it is an age related investment, it is invested pretty conservatively. My understanding is that if I withdraw it now since there is a loss there will be no tax or penalty and I can reinvest in something more aggressive and more flexible, spendingwise. Does this make sense to give up the tax advantage to avoid the possibility of penalties later?

Help an amateur photo buff with these intertube thingies?

I've been inspired by fellow mefite gomichild's site . I want to put together some of my photos for a site but don't know where to begin. I'm not confident with my design skills, and I wonder if I have any photos that are really good enough. I usually just post photos/snapshots on flickr for friends but I have had people contact me wanting to use my photos- so maybe they aren't so bad...Any suggestions for how to start? Anyone out there want to give me a (paid) hand putting a page together? You can see some of the photos at my flickr site(lots of snapshots here) or at JPG. I could put a few hours a day into a project. Right now I am oozing lack of confidence....

Safely charging NiMH batteries

Rechargeable batteries: Any difference between NiMH batteries purchased in Europe vs. US? I have several AA batteries I bought in Eur for my camera, but I don't have my charger with me in the US. 1. If I buy a charger in the US, can I charge the batteries I bought in Europe? 2. When I go back to Europe, is it OK to use the US charger on the European current with just an adaptor for the plug? I just want to make sure I don't (a) start any fires! or (b) damage the batteries. The batteries I have are all either 2000 or 2650. thanks for your help!

Blog Posting Old Letters?

Guys, what is that website or blog that is posting an old letter every day? I think they're all letters from famous or notable people. It's been mentioned in various media and around the web (though not, it seems, on MeFi), but I didn't note the name of it at the time, and Googling is not getting me anywhere. Ring any bells? I would love to be able to cite it for a research project.
