Mechanic Panic - Are They Ripping Me Off??

I've taken my car to the mechanic what seems like an unreasonable number of times to fix an issue. Mostly, the car keeps overheating. First, they replaced the entire radiator. The next time it broke down, it was the water pump, which also necessitated a new timing belt. It's been overheating again, and came close to breaking down. I talked with a guy who knows cars, but is not a mechanic. He says if it's still having problems, it's likely the thermostat. Am I overreacting to not want this same shop to fix it? [more inside]

Different definitions of "respect"

I'm looking for a particular quotation about respect that I saw very recently online somewhere. It was something like "When you tell me you want me to respect you, you mean that you want me to acknowledge that you have authority over me. When I tell you I want you to respect me, I mean that I want you to value me." [more inside]

Thanking my vet for really exceptional service?

In the last four months, I lost both of my beloved cats to cancer. During the great cat die-off, my vet was not only a vet-- he was a friend, a shrink and a sanity check. He emailed me daily, even on his vacation. He did free house calls. He called me several times a week. I would like to thank him in some way which is both a big enough thank you and not too much. Mail app on Macbook not downloading the oldest (2-3 years) of messages

I am trying to back up my Gmail account to my home computer, a MacBook Pro. I am able to sync the account and have downloaded most of my messages/attachments, but the native Mac mail program only downloads messages as far back as 2006. (My Gmail account goes back to 2004.) Disk space is not a problem. I have also made sure the setting for limiting the number of messages to download is not checked. Any other ideas? Thanks!

Given the Taubes/Lustig view on sugar, why not use dextrose everywhere?

How do I cook a side of salmon in the oven?

DialMforMara and Canageek were at the grocery store yesterday, and the fishmonger managed to talk us into getting a side of salmon and trying a soy sauce recipe he recommended. We kept it in the fridge overnight, and then went to start cooking it, and realized that Canageek has only ever pan-fried fish before, and Mara has never cooked fish at all. Advice for oven temperature, cooking time and procedure would be appreciated. [more inside]

Identify a song: like a cross between Shinedown and alt-J...

Bear with me: I haven't heard this song in a while so my memory might be off, but I think this song came out in the last year or so. Genre: alternative rock or electronic, probably indie. The instrumentation is mostly electronic, and the singer is male. What sticks out most is the chorus - the melody descends then ascends and reminds me of the chorus of Shinedown's "Second Chance". What smells like almonds in the forest?

While hiking on the Point Reyes peninsula (Marin County, California, USA), we kept smelling an almond smell. We poked and prodded various trees and plants but could not find the source of the smell. Gmail Account Disabled, How to Reinstate?

I have used gmail for my domain's email for over ten years now. Last Thursday morning my account (which was the administrator on the domain) was disabled. The exact message is "Google has detected unusual activity related to your account and temporarily disabled it." I submitted a support form, and got back a response saying to contact my domain administrator (which, as I said, is the account that was disabled.) A second submission yielded a response that basically said, "It's under review, don't bug us again." Online searches for ways to resolve this are not giving me much hope.
