Why does health club agreement waive my litigation rights?

The "health club" in my apt. building (some free weights, a few weight machines, treadmills, ellipticals) requires tenants to sign an agreement, the first two clauses of which involve litigation: The first says, paraphrasing, I hereby release, waive, discharge and covenant not to sue the management co., owners, employees, etc. from all liability to me and anyone with me for any loss or damage on account of my injury or death caused by the exercise equipment, negligence of the company, etc. [more inside]

Where to buy exercise shorts in Athens, Greece?

Best studies of the atomic age from an international perspective?

I've read Paul Boyer's By the Bomb's Early Light (1985) and Margot Henriksen's Dr. Strangelove's America (1997), and both focus on American society and its reactions to the bomb. Now I'm looking for books and other material that give an overview of other countries in the atomic age. Can you recommend any? [more inside]

Books to take a train by

Next week, I am taking the Empire Builder from Chicago to Portland, Oregon. In a previous question about train travel, someone suggested reading books that take place along your train route. This is an idea I love ... and I have at least 47 hours to pass! So: what are your favorite (kindle) books which occur in Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Washington, or Oregon? Bonus for rural themes. I am not a big mystery fan, but if it is particularly excellent, I'll read it. Romance is out. Otherwise, I'm open to anything!

[element].[classname] vs. .[classname] in CSS

If I plan to define a CSS class to style only one type of element, is it a good idea to write the selector, for example, as img.gallery rather than simply .gallery? Seems that it would make the CSS a little more human-readable.

Forcing Nicecast to Port 8000?

What was this foreign-language horror film called?

Zombies outside hospital; man and woman inside; man is infected and slowly turning; woman must decide when to kill him. Driver for M-Audio Midisport 4x4 for Mac 10.9

I just updated my iMac to 10.9.3 Mavericks. I just discovered that the Midisport 4x4 USB MIDI interface that was using with another Mac doesn't work. It would appear that M-Audio doesn't support 10.9. I tried installing their latest driver for the heck of it but it still doesn't appear to work. Should I just get a new interface or do I have options with this one?

Where can I find info on the contemporary Saudi Arabian art scene?

I'm organizing as as-yet themeless, artist-less show on contemporary Saudi Arabian art for an American audience. Where could I find significant artists, significant prior shows, critical responses, constraints, if any, under which they work, and, in general, information on the Saudi cultural climate? Books, essays, blogs, I'm open to anything at this early research date. I don't read Arabic, by the way, but I can get by in French, Italian, and German, if needed. Thanks.

Why do some people write "1950ies", "1980ies", etc?

I would write "1950s" or "1980s", and this is universal among native English speakers, so far as I am aware. In international contexts, however, I sometimes observe that people whose English spelling is otherwise flawless will consistently write "1950ies" or "1980ies", which reads to me like it has an extra syllable. Where does this convention come from, and what linguistic background makes it sound like a reasonable way to contract these numbers? [more inside]

Does this musical percussion technique have a name?

I have a vague memory of seeing someone perform a percussion piece where they swung a rope in each hand with a weight on the end. They would sometimes allow the weight to strike the wooden resonating chamber to make a "clack" sound. In so doing, they were able to clack out some surprisingly complex rhythms. Does this instrument/technique have a name? What is it? And most importantly, where can I find some videos of people doing it?

Another Queens/NYC bar/restaurant question

I need a bar or restaurant for a small group on Sunday. One of our group however, is my puppy. Another requirement is that it is near the N train, or a quick transfer from the N train on this Sunday (are they still randomly shutting down the 7 train over the weekend?). Beyond that, it's not too picky. I know about the Bohemian Beer Garden, but I am not sure that they allow pets. Sidewalk cafes, anything outdoors should be great.

Does my UK passport tell me how many people share my name?

The machine-readable code at the bottom of the id page of a UK passport (starting P<GBR) contains a name on one line, and on the second line a long string of numbers, lots of chevrons and then a two-digit number. My mum claims that this two-digit number indicates the number of people with the same name as me already registered as having a passport. This seems unlikely, but is there any truth in it? What's the name of this kids' scifi anthology I remember?
