Homemade ice cream... do we have the technology?

I would really love to know if it is possible to make gelato/ice cream at home as good or better than the best brands you would buy in the store or high end ice cream parlors (in NYC, some of my idols include Ample Hills Creamery, Fresco Gelateria, Chinatown Ice Cream Factory). Are there any good books or resources out there? Is special equipment needed? Does anyone have any great methods and tools they would like to share?

Does a long-lasting instant ice pack exist?

I am pumping breastmilk right now and travel fairly often. I have a system for everything except keeping milk cold during a long travel day. I have several gel style ice packs that need to be frozen to work. On the trip out I can freeze the gel packs and they stay frozen for about a day. My issue is that hotels never seem to have a way for me to freeze my ice packs for the trip back. So, I'm stuck with soggy gel packs (which TSA hates!) and it gives me anxiety about the milk getting too warm. Any ideas? [more inside]

How should I allocate this cash I was going to use for a down payment?

Since I graduated a few years ago and started working, I focused on saving money in order to (1) pay down my student loans and (2) use as a down payment for a home. After establishing an emergency fund and starting retirement fund payments, I put half of my savings to the student loans and half in a low interest savings account intended for the down payment (with ~20% in an investment account). Now goal 2 is proving elusive, and I'm wondering what I should do with the money. [more inside]

Would they have been purchased, say of the Turner painting, or made by the cousins? Where can I see transparencies from this period?

I need to ship an item from the Russian Federation to the UK...

Some months ago, I lost my iPod in Moscow whilst out there doing festival biz (I'm a Brit by residence). Incredibly, someone found it, the Apple security held, and I got an email from someone telling me they'd be happy to meet up and give it back. As the air fare is higher than the device cost, I thought going postal would be the best option, but I've drawn a blank - most of the delivery companies either want me to pay cash on the Russian side, or expect me to have a corporate account. What caused these wires inside our TV to turn into charcoal?

A story I want to read again.

I want to re-read a story or a book (or maybe even a graphic novel) I've read before, but all I can remember about it is a single line, spoken during a crisis by a character that (I think) is supposed to be more intelligent than those around them: "I'm dry of ideas." I thought the line was from one of the Douglas Adams books, but if it is, Google is proving unhelpful. Thanks!

Curse you, Kleenex, for making these so scarce

I like functional, high-quality linen or cotton handkerchiefs, but which are neither plain white nor bandanas, nor flannel, synthetic, nor shiny. I don't want them to match a tie, I just want a piece of soft cloth with a fine hem that I can sneeze into which I don't have to make myself. Striped with white is fine. The boringest shade of blue possible would be ideal. Where do I buy this, preferably in packs of several?
