Help this hypochondriac prepare for doctor visit

Maybe more obsessive-over-thinker than hypochondriac. Woke up with an unexpectedly hoarse voice and bit of a sore throat. After eating today, I went to spit up some phlegm, and it *hurt*, and a fair amount of blood came up with the phlegm. All the non-gross stuff is behind the cut. [more inside]

'Being' and creativity: does meditation dissolve imagination?

A lot of mindfulness meditation techniques focus on awareness of the present moment and stepping outside our personal narratives. My question is: does this process end up dissolving our perceptions of the past; and when one side steps the narrative, doesn't it make it harder to compose and imagine stories that exist outside of the present moment?

Tell me what to do with my basil-infused vodka

Measuring power in an AC cable with iPhone sensors. How does this work?

My electric utility released an iPhone app called "DTE Insight" which (among other things) measures the amount of power flowing through an appliance's power cord by asking you to hold the cord against a specific part of the iPhone at a specific angle. I have tested it against my Kill-a-Watt and it seems remarkably accurate for what it is. It presumably uses the iPhone's magnetic field sensor to accomplish this, but how on earth does it actually work? [more inside]

Steep hill, can't mow it, no time to maintain it.

I have a hill on one side of my house that goes down into the neighbor's yard. It's too steep to mow, and the ground covering plants I've put down have always lost to the weeds. What's a good cost-effective and low (preferably zero) maintenance option for keeping it from becoming overgrown and looking horrible? More inside. [more inside]

Best county to get married in courthouse in Georgia - waiting period

I was told that in Georgia I can get married in any county I want since I am a resident (fiance is Japanese and immigrating here on K visa). I was wondering which courthouse might have the lowest waiting period? We want to get married as soon as possible after she arrives here. I am in Atlanta area so closer is better. Hair Color Question, Trans Woman Edition

I need some opinions and advice on hair color and style. I am for all intents and purposes "out" IRL now and I am trying to get all the parts of this nascent girlmode dialed in. Where can I get non-graphic news about ISIS?

Most of the time, I can do the research myself, but I've just defriended a bunch of people and closed browser tabs over ISIS news because of the graphic accounts and photographs of child killings. I'd like to be able to understand what's happening with ISIS in Iraq in more depth than the NYT coverage, but I keep getting the photographs and videos. Please recommend a range of news sources (I'm okay with upfront biases) that aren't explicit on the atrocities.

Should I be exposing my baby to more people?

My baby is about to turn 7 months old. Due to various factors, he does not get a huge amount of exposure to people that aren't me and his dad. Traditional knives, or knives with history.

I'm searching for traditional knives, or knives with a well-regarded history. Knives in the first group would be puuko knives, hori hori, kukri, and higo knives. Knives in the second group would be opinel, douk douk, victorinox, and laguiole knives. (Some of these are knife makers and some are unprotected names.) Nothing is too big or too small. I prefer knives that are just knives, but things that are also tools would be cool to see. Respected makers of traditional knives would also be appreciated.

Unemployment figures for Germany during the Weimar Republic?

I need to show unemployment figures for Germany during the Weimar Republic (starting no later than 1923) in a way that consistently compares apples to apples and not apples to oranges -- i.e., total number of unemployed OR total percentage of workforce, but not sometimes one and sometimes the other. (Having both would be ideal.) I would also prefer a specific month for each figure, if possible, rather than just the year (i.e., "Unemployment reaches 5.1 million in September 1932" is more useful than "Unemployment reaches 5.1 million in 1932"). Identify an old newspaper comic strip?

My dad has been trying to track down an old (1950s/60s) newspaper strip that sounds a lot like a Dennis the Menace kind of thing. He swears it was called "Wilbur," and that it was about another kid like Dennis who gets into mischief. One strip he described is a car with a guy under it, and "Wilbur" (or whatever his name was) is standing nearby with black stuff all over his face. Wilbur is thinking, "Never give a hot-foot to a guy with a grease gun." Could he be thinking of Wilbur Wilkin, from "Wilbur Comics"? That was a comic BOOK, not a newspaper strip, right? And he seems more about womanizing than pranks..? I don't see any likely candidates online under the name "Wilbur," are there any classic comic strip experts who know what may dad is thinking of?

Stop trying to be smart, switch!

I have this USB DAC/headphone amp (which is great). I just started using the RCA outputs for a pair of powered monitors (also great). What's the 'significance' of the word bubonic in bubonic plague?

This is one entry on a vocabulary list that asks for a definition of the word or phrase and the 'significance' of the word or part of the phrase. This is part of a 15-year-old's summer homework, but no explanation is given of what the 'significance' of the word significance is. My take is that 'significance' is kind of an inherent effect or consequence of the word; for bubonic, I'd say the significance is civilization-changing death due to uncontrolled pest and population density. Any other ideas?

Identify a movie

My wife and I enjoyed this one but we can't remember it! Teenage or early 20s boy has some mental powers and a girlfriend that he is crazy about. Good thrifting blogs?

Here's what I'm looking for: blogs by people who go to Goodwill and similar thrift stores and buy things for their home/garden and either use them as-is or fix them up somehow. I'm not interested in blogs that focus on clothing/fashion, or blogs that are only about crafting with thrift-store stuff, or blogs that are only about buying and then reselling on ebay or whatever.
