Why are C-sections common for surrogacy?

Recently I read a story about surrogacy on Cup of Jo and it was mentioned the C-sections are common for surrogates. I've googled and haven't come up with any reasons why (but have confirmed that they are common) and thinking too hard about C-sections makes me queasy, so I turn to AskMetafilter yet again! Exterior carpentry and painting - Vancouver BC

We’re home-owners in Vancouver, BC. We love our house, but it’s needs some minor work on the exterior. Some of the wood trim needs repair, and the trim, fencing, and deck need painting. The majority of the work is the painting, and we are unsure of the best way to get this done. We are not handy, and so need to hire someone. [more inside]

Outlook for a Mac

I've moved to an office which uses Macbooks and Gmail/Google calendar. I can't believe I'm saying this but I miss Outlook! My company won't pay for a licence, but I'd be willing to pay for it myself to bring some order back to my life. Is this possible? Can I buy something like this and sych it with my company Gmail? The reviews are pretty poor, would it be more hassle than it's worth? Anything else I should consider? [more inside]

WordPress, or roll-my-own cms?

I have a bunch of friends and acquaintances in a particular career for whom operating WordPress as a user is just too overwhelming and complicated. Also, none of the themes or plugins I'm finding are actually geared to meet their industry's information presentation requirements. So do I learn WordPress theme and plugin development so I can wrestle it around to be what they need, or do I create my own lightweight CMS that does what they need while minimizing and simplifying the user backend? What do I feed my first-grader?

Short version: I have a 7 year old picky eater. I just found out that he is allergic to the bulk of his diet-peanuts, almonds, dairy, and wheat. Difficulty is that he is a vegetarian by choice and he gags when he has meat. Good news is that he does eat an acceptable amount of fruit and veggies. What is it like being a tourist in Chile during their winter?

I'm thinking of visiting Chile in June and July, which are winter months there. There seems to be a lot of focus on outdoors activities in Chile, which might be more enjoyable during their summer. Should I do something about my rat's dead toe?

Rented an apartment, but the natural gas smell is too much

My newly rented apartment has a distinct odor of natural gas in the living room/kitchen adjacent to the gas fireplace, furnace, and water heater.
