What happened to the fronts in World War I at the Swiss border?

What happened to the fronts in World War I at the Swiss border? Did the trenches go up to an imaginary line and just...stop? Was there just an agreement on both sides that no aggressive action would be taken within a certain distance from Switzerland? Has anything been written on this situation, or even better, any pictures of what happened when the trench lines approached the Cantons? [more inside]

the long road to long beach

Road-Trip-Restaurant-Recommendation-Filter: My wife and I will be traveling from Oakland, CA to Long Beach, CA this Saturday. We plan on leaving kind of early and taking our time. My wife is pregnant so we anticipate a lot of bathroom stops. We'll be taking I-5 for most of the trip. My family lives in the Central Valley so I'm familiar with the first part of the trip, but anything on I-5 south of Harris Ranch is new to me. [more inside]

Video of a 1974 US Navy Burial at Sea of recovered Soviet sailors.

On September 4, 1974 the bodies of 6 Soviet sailors were recovered by the US Navy while clandestinely surveying the wreckage of submarine K-129. In 1992 CIA director Robert Gates "...as a gesture of intent, a symbol of a new era... carried with [him, on a state visit with Boris Yeltsin] the Soviet naval flag that had shrouded the coffins... [and] a videotape of their burial at sea, complete with prayers for the dead and the Soviet national anthem—-a dignified and respectful service even at the height of the Cold War."[1] Where/how can I watch this videotape?

IKEA budget, boutique hotel taste

Decorating a small flat in London on a budget without resorting to IKEA? I'm tired of having my place looking studenty and would like to pick up some nice, unique furnishings and accessories. I don't have a lot of space or money to work with, however. I know about Gumtree, but can you recommend some stores I can visit to get ideas as well as buy cool stuff? I live in W2 (which isn't exactly budget-friendly, I know.)

Books about successful outsiders or misfits

Can you recommend any books or other compendiums of bios of notable, successful people who were misfits or outsiders for much of their upbringing? A friend's teen daughter has always marched to her own drummer, but she is having an especially tough time right now and we'd like to give her some examples of positive role models. (The folks in the Apple "Think Different" campaign are the easy, obvious ones - we'd like something a bit more thoughtful and real.)

Can I get away with putting these "line dry" pants in the dryer?

LaundryFilter: I recently bought some stretch cotton pants. According to the label, stretch cotton is defined as c. 97-98% cotton, with the remainder being spandex. Unfortunately, that very same label informs me that I'm supposed to line dry these pants, which is enormously inconvenient for me. Could I get away with putting these through a few minutes in a regular dryer on the low dry/delicates setting or would that destroy the pants? [more inside]

Can a huge geothermal power plant cause an earthquake?

As I understand it, the 7.2 earthquake that hit Mexico last weekend had it's epicenter in Guadalupe Victoria, which is just a few miles from Cerro Prieto, a dormant volcano and the worlds largest Geothermal plant. Is there any scientific (not tinfoil hat) evidence that having a large scale Geothermal plant, doing whatever it is Geothermal plants specifically do, could lead to or worsen an earthquake? And if the volcano is dormant, how is the plant generating power? Does dormant just mean not spewing lava actively, but there is activity underneath? [more inside]
