Recycling 101 - How "clean" should a shampoo bottle be before going in the recycle bin?

My local recycling information page says I should rinse out plastic bottles, but shampoo (as an example) does not seem to rinse out very easily and I don't want to waste a lot of water, either. How do other people handle this? [more inside]

How can I protect sensitive online info and a portable hard drive while traveling?

I'm about to embark on an approximately 3.5 month backpacking trip through the north of Africa and Middle East. I'm looking for advice on web/tech security while traveling. My first issue concerns web security- in order to avoid having credit card and banking info stolen through key loggers and such at internet cafes, I'm thinking of performing all my 'sensitive' interwebbing (ie hostel reservations, banking) on my iPod touch. Are there precautions I should take to ensure web security even on the Touch? Do more technologically competent MeFites than myself approve of using the Touch? Secondly, I'm planning on backing up my photos on a portable hard drive and I'll be using public computers to do so. Do I have to worry about any viruses and such getting onto the hard drive? If so, what can I do to avoid that? [more inside]

In what Los Angeles stores can I shop for plush leather desk chairs?

In what Los Angeles stores can I shop for plush leather desk chairs? I'd like to visit well established stores (ones that have been around for a decade or so) and try out various desk chairs before I make a purchase. I'm willing to drop some bucks for the right chair. I want it to be down-stuffed, soft leather, plush, swivel, tiltable back, adjustable height. I'm not really concerned so much about ergonomics...I don't have back problems. I just want a sense of plushiness when I sit at my desk. I'm willing to drive to any part of town.

Can you actually be too short to be a high school teacher?

I want to be a high school French teacher, but at twenty years old I still have the height, weight, and voice of a twelve-year-old. Rock and roll Hound Dog Hound Dog

ToonFilter: I remember, when I was very young, watching a cartoon about two bears living in a forest (note: they were not Yogi & Boo-Boo), who scrounged meals off people passing by. The older bear would, when an older couple drove through, make himself look pathetic and starving. When a jalopy full of teenagers drove through, he said "I'll do my Elvis act," whereupon he combed his head fur into a pompadour grabbed a guitar and sang "Hound Dog Hound Dog Rock and Roll Rock and Roll Hound Dog" and was rewarded with a bunch of eats. Has anyone else seen these and if so, what is the title of the short?

I'm thisclose to breaking my hip on my weekly commute.

Native Angeleno new to DC, and even with my snail-pace shuffle, I am still slipping left and right during my walk to the subway. If you spend a lot of time walking on icy roads, what do you use to gain a stable footing and traction? Online, I've found LL Bean Stabilicers, YakTrax, and select shoes by The North Face that are supposed to have better traction because of "Ice Pick™ temperature-sensitive outsole lugs." Before I spend a bunch of money on any of these, I'd like to know - what do you use that works? Is there some secret snow walk I should know? HELP. [more inside]

I need a clarification regarding bonds and rents

Yesterday, Mike Konczal (rortybomb) wrote the following, "The graduating class of 2011 will enter a brutal job market that will hurt its ability to be rewarded for its labor, and thus lead a full life, for at least a decade. A note to these graduates: take comfort that you must “endure” this suffering in order to placate invisible bond vigilantes and protect rentier income." What is the rentier income he is talking about? Is he saying that bond holders, generally, are rentiers?
