Vintage hairstyles for dead straight hair or short hair.

I love vintage/pin-up styles, and 1950s style fashion is what suits my body type. Great. I am going through a stage of convincing myself I want to keep my long hair rather than cutting it all off by trying to style it more and incorporate pin-up and vintage hairstyles to go with the fashion. shoulder separation: surgery vs. doing nothing, or is there third way?

Asking for a friend: he fell off a motorscooter while riding it and fell on his left side. The main injury was "AC separation" [a type of shoulder separation -- damage to the acromioclavicular joint -- which is _not_ the same thing as shoulder _dislocation_], type 3;means that surgery is optional but worth considering. Is there some other choices beside surgery, or doing nothing? [more inside]

Do you trigger warning? Would you want one?

I teach college-level courses in a historical humanities field. My research and teaching both swim in a time period where the conceptualization of "consent," as we understand it today, was not in play. So I have to teach a lot of documents, images, novels, poems, and plays that... well, to be honest .... feature rape as a matter of course - often, in fact, as a comedic convention or as an important didactic touchstone. I teach a lot of works that also features graphic violence - again as part of a conventional, generic trope. And I teach a lot of radical political philosophy from [historical humanities field]. Do I need to include a trigger warning on my syllabus? If so, what does that look like? Do the graphic violence and/or radical politics also warrant a similar warning? And if so, what does that look like? [more inside]

Talent show ideas for talentless people?

A group of friends is having a talent show tomorrow night. The ostensible purpose is to celebrate the marriage and relocation of a couple in the group, so ideally the acts should somehow relate to marriage and/or California (but if you have a great idea that's not related to either of those things, we can be flexible). Can you help us think of a talent that would require minimal time and effort? [more inside]

Hello gurus out there! I have created a batch of 10 posters that are going to the printers later today (yikes!!!!). I was wasn't 100% sure of the requirements when I started, so my posters were created in the RGB color space. I now find out that the printer needs them to be CMYK. When I use File>Document Color Mode>CMYK Color, I notice that the color shift can be quite large on a few of my posters. [more inside]

Novellas, novelettes, short stories

Where do you read novellas, novelettes and short stories in science fiction? Whom do you suggest? During the golden age of sf I relied on Analog/Astounding, but after all the recent Hugo drama I have realized that I barely keep up with the new novels. Looking back at the titles that won Hugos and Nebulas, I realized how many of the shorter pieces I truly loved and I feel the need to get to know the youngish writers. Tell me whom I should read and where I'll find that author.

Time for a new wifi router?

After years of trouble-free operation, my 4 year old Linksys N750 wifi router has begun having problems, mainly that it drops the internet connection on the 2.4 G band (but not the 5 G band curiously enough). That is to say, the 2.4G Wifi connection isn't itself lost, just that the 2.4G channel loses its internet connectivity. It seems to happen mostly in the evenings. Since my phone and the Wii we watch Netflix through can only use 2.4G, this has become very annoying. [more inside]
