I'm a Chicagoan who has lived in Portland, OR for four years. I miss the Midwest and I'm considering moving to Minneapolis (or possibly St. Paul). Next week, I'll be visiting the Twin Cities to scope it out. Help me plan a kick-ass and productive itinerary for my limited time in town! Also, what small progressive church should I attend on Sunday morning? [more inside]

I remember reading in the past few years about an old machine that was like a paid bulletin board. You'd pay a nickel to leave a small (business card or smaller) sized message and people could check it. I think the article I read compared it to Twitter, and was illustrated with an old engraving. Hello, everyone. I have an Acer Chromebook C720. In the past, I've been able to download apps. Now I can't. I get a never ending "checking" notice. I've checked all imaginable forums. It apparently is an issue, but there doesn't seem to be any simple resolution. Has anyone successfully resolved this issue or else might have a way to troubleshoot it? Thank you.

I need to replace my laptop. In order to defer costs, I decided to apply for a 0% APR (over the first 15 cycles) card, and put the laptop's cost on that so I can pay a bit each month without accruing interest on the purchase. I'm worried about the longevity of the deal, and my card isn't set to arrive for a week. They also offer fee-free balance transfers - so I'm thinking of putting the charge on an existing card and then transferring the balance. Is there anything else I should keep in mind here, or is there a hidden fee somewhere that might screw me? [more inside]
I see a lot of Politico stories popping up these days about the upcoming US election. Are they worth my time to read? In general is their news reporting trustworthy and well sourced? Or are they mostly biased, clickbait, or recycled stories from other sources? [more inside]

I have a very wet unfinished basement. I have a sump & pump there. The sump is dirt floored, or more precisely, clay floored. It's got cement sides, but is otherwise just a hole dug into the earth beneath the basement. Can I get some sort of cement and pour it into the water such that I roughly pave the floor? I have no idea what I'm doing with this sort of thing. [more inside]

I am on vacation and received a voicemail on my cellphone from an officer with my local police department, saying that he went by my apartment to conduct a welfare check on behalf of "Mr. Max" and asking me to call back to confirm I am okay. I do not know anyone by that name, and I am in regular contact with normal friends and family (needless to say, I am fine). [more inside]

My iphone 6 headphone jack has got intermittent audio weirdness regardless of different known good headphones plugged into it. The owners manual for my 2011 Toyota Camry purchased in the US gives a 1000 lb. trailer weight limit. The Australian owners manual for a 2011 Camry gives a 2600 lb. (1200 kg) trailer weight limit. Is there any actual difference between the cars to account for the difference, or is this some sort of weird bureaucratic thing where the US makes the car companies low ball the tow rating? So, so, so many songs end with the same repeated, seemingly intentionally hammy flourish. What is this called? Where did it come from? What's the story there? Example: 2:38 in to this Dropkick Murphys song, though I could have used a virtually infinite number of others.
I'm trying to break out of a rough period, but I'm not exactly sure what I'm supposed to be breaking into. Would anyone be interested in just giving me an honest, minute to minute run down of a day in their life- a work day, a free day, any day, any age, any stage? [more inside]
I really like microwavable hot packs (often a sock filled with grain). I also really like hot wet washcloths. They work great on tension headaches and the little muscles in my head. But they don't last very long - certainly not long enough for me to use one to heat all the different places in my head that want heating. Do you have any suggestions for long-lasting heat for my head muscles? [more inside]
There's a book that was published near the end of 2015/beginning of 2016 that is about a man who is killed and he ends up as a ghost (or maybe zombie-esque) traveling the world. That's the only description I can remember from the review that I read (in Entertainment Weekly). I also think the book had a brown cover. I don't know if was published in hardcover or paperback. Anyone know what this might be?

I recently had a routine screening mammogram. The radiologist recommended that I come back for a spot-compression mammogram and an ultrasound. After I had those two procedures, the radiologist recommended that I come back again for an ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and also a stereotactic breast biopsy. Both procedures are scheduled for this Thursday. I am getting quite nervous about the stereotactic biopsy. More inside! [more inside]
This frog-like beastie was hanging out next to our pond. It looked to be about three inches long. My best googling makes me think it's a baby bullfrog but I'm a bit confused by the dazzling yellow chin stripe. This is in suburban Bloomington, Indiana.
My wired Apple Keyboard keeps shocking me whenever I depress a key for too long (aka any time I type) to the point that I have little sore spots on all my fingertips. The shocks are strong enough that I can hear them through my headphones as soon as the arc makes contact with my fingers. What is going on, and why isn't the issue resolved by grounding myself? Have owned this home about 35 years and never had a problem with mice in the house before (a couple in the garage is all). In the last couple weeks we have seen a few mice in our laundry area which is ground level. The latest one (trapped today) looks to my non-expert eye like a deer mouse (small, white under belly), which I gather is bad news from a health standpoint. Two found in the laundry tub were disposed of previously. Questions after the break. [more inside]
Just received a cortisone shot for trigger finger. Reports vary on how soon I should see improvement, if the cortisone is going to help. If it doesn't help, I'll need surgery. I am looking for anecdotal info on your experience (I am not concerned about the surgery, I am just wondering how hopeful or resigned to be). If you have had a cortisone shot, how long did it take to see improvement? I am on day 2 with no improvement at all. You are not my doctor and I am not soliciting medical advice. Thanks!
Starting grad school in a few weeks and need some suggestions for note taking "apps" or software. I'm more of a pen and paper kind of girl but I know that, realistically, it might be best if I learned to take lecture notes on my laptop or iPad. What do you use for notes? [more inside]
Mefites, lend me your collective bibliographic wisdom. I'm looking for successful/popular YA novels published in the last 5-7 years that embody creepy/atmospheric horror, as opposed to bloody/gory/slasher horror. If "Anna Dressed in Blood" is on the bloody end of the spectrum, for example, what's on the creepy end?
A recent question here served to introduce me to Postcrossing, the online service that facilitates postcard mailings between strangers all over the world. Does the same thing exist for sharing "mixtapes" all over the world? Or would that get a cease-and-desist from the get-go?
So I was just diagnosed with an incurable blood cancer. Life expectancies are all over the map - from a few years to decades - and I should probably stop Googling them. My family is far away, but my friends are falling over themselves to ask how they can help. I need suggestions for starting to get a handle on this. [more inside]

I will be leaving Bastogne on the morning of 9/26 and arriving in Bruges/Brugge on the evening of 9/28 and have no plans yet for the time in between. I will have access to a car and would like to tour some industrial or industrial heritage sites during that time. I am willing to drive a good couple hundred miles out of my way to do so. Do you have any suggestions for me? [more inside]
Back in the proverbial day (2006/2007), the TV channel MHD (later called Palladia, LATER called MTV Live) aired a Gorillaz concert called "Demon Days: Live in Harlem". It was filmed at the Apollo on New Year's Eve, I believe. They performed the Demon Days album straight through, with cartoon visuals. Dennis Hopper narrated one song. I would pay strip club-style SWEATY FISTFULS OF CASH to obtain a decent video of this (digital format is ideal, but DVD is also fine). Any ideas?

How do mixed-race people (i.e. with multiple ethnic backgrounds) reconcile living in white supremacy? Do mixed-race people ever transcend the barriers to become grounded and thrive in their identity? (so no, I don't mean a mixed-race person who has settled for a singular identity as the pricetag for membership benefits in a single ethnic group; I mean mixed-race persons who've thrived in spite of membership or acceptance by either group).
