It's a bad time...but when is it ever a good time?

I'm coming to realize that my partner is seriously abusing alcohol (and being cavalier about other substances) just as he's embarking on an existential crisis following a messy legal situation (finalizing a divorce that's 2+ years in the making). The relationship needs work; he needs work; hell, I might need work; but he's got a lot on his plate and I can't really pile on. I have kind of lost sight of what is reasonable here, and could use some perspective. [more inside]

Suggestions for unusual, exciting condiments

Introduction to Episode Skipping

I don't have a lot of TV watching time nowadays, so I'm behind on everything. I've only now caught up on the first three seasons of "Community." Having heard that the Dan-Harmonless season 4 was a disappointment, I plan to just skip ahead to season 5. Before I do, are there any Season 4 episodes that I should make a point of watching -- either because they are up there in quality with the first three seasons, or because they set up crucial plot points for the fifth? I wasn't happy with my work-issued laptop and mentioned this to my supervisor. He announced a switch, my collegue would get my laptop and I would get her new one, which is due to arrive next week. She is not happy with it either, but didn't protest. I feel bad about it. What to do? [more inside]

should I own this car pre or post- interstate move?

I am 24 and about to be a car owner. Next month I am moving from Utah to Indiana alone with the car, which is currently owned by mother. We don't know whether I should be given the title, have the car registered in my name and get an independent insurance policy in Utah before I go, or leave everything in my mother's name until I get to Indiana. What animals are making these vocalizations?

How can I turn a text file into a bunch of images using imagemagick?

Say I have a text file with short lines of text (e.g. License plate numbers or radio call letters). I'd like to use imagemagick to convert this text file to a folder full of images of said text, with each line from the text file being a separate image. Preferably, I'd like the output to be named with the content. What are the magic command-line words to make this happen? [more inside]

Help me do something nice for my coworker, whose beloved pet is dying

One of my favorite colleagues has a cat, and it is dying. She is just waiting on tests to come back from the vet so they can decide if palliative care is an option or not. I'd like to do something nice to let her know that I'm thinking of her, but need ideas that won't memorialize me as "That girl who did that crazy thing in a misguided attempt to nice." Also looking for a sanity check - if this is a bad idea, please say so (and why). [more inside]

Best way to get audio from youtube videos into a Sony Walkman?

Nonviolent sff: where is it?

Please recommend to me any science fiction/fantasy novels (maybe TV shows as well) that are well written, interesting, and essentially nonviolent. "Completely violence-free" isn't necessary. Utility to rename files as they are extracted from a RAR archive

I have many data files named in a particular format. The files are either ZIP or RAR archives, and contain several sub-data files each in different formats (with a different extension; this is Windows). I need a utility to extract the contents and simultaneously rename each sub-data file to the name of its parent archive AND preserve the sub-data files' extensions. Anyone know of such a utility? Winrar, 7zip don't do this, and I've had no luck searching around.

Explain to me a point-and-shoot's wide depth of field

Digital point-and-shoots have a very wide depth of field. I've been explained this is because of the tiny sensor size. But film P&S have very wide depth of field too, despite being "full frame." My guess is because of the lens distance to film and small aperture. Is this correct? Say, if I frankenmount a film P&S lens to a DSLR would I get the same wide depth of field of a P&S?

How can I make my cinder block classroom cozy?

My first grade classroom looks slightly like a (colorful) prison. It is white painted cinder block. It has three big windows with blinds and most of the furniture is kind of dilapidated. There are fluorescent lights. I have a few houseplants and even had a friend build some colorful curtains for the cubbies and cabinets, but I can't seem to kick the institutional feel. It also smells sort of weird. What are some of the make or break elements that make a space feel cozy, homey, livable? Especially for a child-friendly place.
