I want to drive from Seattle and 'get to' Alaska, just so I can say I've been there. So-- no particular PLACE in Alaska, but officially "in Alaska". I want to drive, not fly. What's the more scenic place to enter Alaska-- Northway, or Haines? [more inside]

I start a new job next Monday. HR specifically asked if I had any prior obligations, and I said "no" — I had plans for Labor Day weekend, but didn't think I'd need to take any extra time off. Turns out I was wrong. For reasons of logistics, I will either need to take Friday off work or else cancel my plans. Realistically, can I ask my new boss for that day off now without looking like a terrible flake? (And should I ask now, or wait and bring it up on my first day of work?)
My wife is going to a rural area in Poland with our 5 year old daughter for a week to visit family. This location is known to host a lot of ticks during the Summer, of which a significant portion has borrelia. We are worried that our daughter might get Lyme's disease. What to do? More details after the fold. [more inside]
I'm shipping some stuff from Germany to the US. I have the choice of sending these items as letters or as parcels. I'm using DHL. Which option will be faster? [more inside]
Querying the Metafilter Collaborative Filtering Algorithm: I greatly enjoy 1st-person action-RPGs like Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim, and - stretching the RPG category a bit - Borderlands. I also enjoy D&D-like party-based CRPGs like Baldur's Gate. I generally prefer traditional RPG stat and leveling mechanics and an open world layout, or at least a map accommodating multiple paths. Can you recommend other RPGs for PC, iPad, or Android that I might enjoy, particularly indie games that may have gotten less attention from the gaming press? [more inside]
I have the awesome problem of deciding what I want to do with two and half days in Italy, in August. [more inside]
No, it's not a time-share scam. Yes, it's legitimate. I've been to Hawaii once as pre-teen and my partner has never been. Assume for the sake of this question that you have 4-5 days in Hawaii and want to see/do all the best things. What would you recommend?
I have recently been put in charge of a small culinary library and would like it expand its selection of food/restaurant industry memoirs - I'm having a little trouble finding non-white authors. We've got Madhur Jaffrey, Jen Lin-Liu, Gillian Clark, and I found Eddie Huang. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
I've been trying and failing to come up with some good opportunities for my partner to get more comfortable around children (think newborn to 8 yrs old) but that don't involve a career change or taking on a full-time job. He has just about zero experience supervising children. Details after the jump! [more inside]
Our lovely little cat-beast has taken to pissing on our sofa basically every morning, no matter how much we try to stop him, no matter how clean the litter box. We're using Febreeze to try and get rid of the smell, but we worry that a certain aroma remains, and that's what makes him go back there. Is there some strong-smelling but nontoxic-to-cats substance we could put on the sofa to make it appear less like a giant soft litter box?
mrs. mmascolino had a dermatologist apply Cantharidin* to a very stubborn wart that she has right above her heel. The doctor suggested that it would hurt for 4 hours or so and to take some Acetaminophen. She is on her third round of drugs and it is 11+ hours since her dermatologist appointment and foot is still in a decent amount of pain. Is there anything we can do (ice, heat, etc.) that would help in the short term but wouldn't prevent the treatment from working? [more inside]
I have at least one, possibly more, blogs I would like to monetize. I don't really want to use AdSense on certain specific ones. Please hook me up with articles and anecdotes and what not. Give me the 101 of Patreon here. I am looking at it as a possible next step. [more inside]
We're putting a standard sized vertical refrigerator on top of carpet at my workplace and we'd like to put it on top of some kind of waterproof mat with a raised edge or lip to it, in case some day the fridge breaks down and leaks. What would be the right search term for this kind of item? [more inside]
I have a tumor and will be doing some follow ups with doctors about it. However I'm trying to figure out how much it could be affecting me; plus your experience with one. [more inside]
My long-term, long-distance girlfriend and I occasionally don't get to see each other as planned. Today was one of those times, and her response has me thinking that she might be happier if we weren't together. How do I work out how to proceed from here? [more inside]
So, I am finally giving up my last personal connection to Microsoft, my home PC running Windows 7 Home Premium, and switching to a really gorgeous iMac. Everything else in my life -- phone, tablet, watch, and laptop -- are already Apple. What preparations should I engage in while waiting for the new iMac to be delivered? And what do you recommend for smoothly getting my data (photos, documents, Quicken file, etc.) from my PC to my new Mac? And is there anything else you would advise I do as I make the transition? Many thanks.
A good friend of mine recently passed away, and his mother asked me to pick two musical selections to play at his service. He was a big classical music buff, but I am not. I know Mahler was his favorite, but frankly, I have no idea where to even begin. Please help me identify Mahler compositions that are appropriate (in terms of mood and length) for a memorial service.

BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB BBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBC, etc. until ... YZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ; finally ending with ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. How many lines would you have after you did this for the whole alphabet?

A while back, I was insomnia-browsing, and I came across either an illustration or a photograph of a tattoo, related to the saying below. Unfortunately, I can't remember which. Either way, it was black-and-white, in a simple engraved style. Any ideas what this illustration could be? If it was a tattoo, it seemed like it was probably copied from or inspired by a historical illustration. [more inside]
Hi All, I could not find the answer to this in the archives; apologies if I am overlooking something. I know that there have been other threads posted about this issue, but I hopefully can get some advice to help me keep my head on straight. I ended things last week with a girl that was diagnosed with being bipolar at a young age. We only dated a little over a month but we spent so much time together that it feels like half a year. She's currently not on medication and she's been separated from her husband for a year. Did I make the right decision? [more inside]

We've been waking up headachy and cranky in a room that always acquires a "stuffy" smell overnight (which in retrospect smells a lot like said mattress). We chalked it up to bad air circulation until we opened up the mattress, which to our untrained eyes looked awful. But we're not chemists, and on this question the internet is rife with woo. Can the mattress really be causing our sleep issues? [more inside]

I am looking for an external numberpad for a Dell M3800. I would prefer Bluetooth in order to not having to use an USB receiver. It seems there are not many options. Thoughts? Alternatively, any recommendations for a cable free numberpad using a receiver that also supports a mouse and is super small? [more inside]
I'm an indie writer who wants to learn how to do good covers. I am also completely new to photoshop. Would like to know of good tutorials that will teach me photoshop AND good book cover design. Preferably at the same time. The web is littered with sites and video that's supposed to help. But I'm hoping someone here will steer me to something really good.
Can you personally recommend a vegetarian friendly restaurant that serves healthy, "clean" (i.e. not oily or rich, so sadly not a lot of foods from delicious traditions) food in TriBeCa that is not gazillions of dollars a head?

I'm close to an important academic deadline, and I need to hole up somewhere this weekend and just churn out words. My goal is to produce about 10-12,000 words of rough draft in the next 3 days (there will be time to edit so I'm not too worried about polish at this stage). I would like some tips on how to maximise my chances of getting this done. [more inside]

I find it very hard to find the motivation to get involved in social interactions or group activities. I am happy observing, only speaking up when I feel I have something unique to contribute, like when I see nobody else is saying what I have to say or is able to perform something I can do. I don't want attention for the sake of attention and am used to being an observer, but I need to change as this behavior is beginning to have a toll on my life. Details inside. [more inside]
In a middle-of-the-road restaurant (i.e. not upscale, but not fast food), is it or is it not okay to leave a bunched-up, used tissue on a finished plate, alongside a bunched-up napkin, leftover food scraps and used cutlery?

Mrs. Cowlick will be at a flea market this weekend selling her wares. During past events, she's simply has folks sign their email addresses on paper to join her mailing lists but many emails are either illegible or just plain misspelled. Has anyone tried a different way to collect emails? We were going to feed these emails to Mailchimp if that matters.
Do you have a convection oven, or a convection/conventional oven? What are the pros? What are the cons? Do you use the convection part of the oven for everything, or just some things? Do you have a specific model you would recommend?
I travel a lot and I often wonder if you know your plane is going down is there anything you can do to save yourself. For example, could you turn the spare liferaft into a parachute? Or would it be better to try to move to the back? Assume the plane can't be saved. What would mcgiver do?
People who have low body fat due to anorexia, disease, etc., look visibly unhealthy. People such as body builders and actors who have low body fat look healthy. I guess I can understand that "little amount of fat over large amount of muscle" looks healthy while "little amount of fat over little amount of muscle" looks unhealthy, but since people generally don't lift weights with their faces, necks, etc., it would seem that their faces would look the same, but that's not the case. What causes the unhealthiness of anorexic/disease/etc. weight-loss to be apparent in the face and neck?
