Unscented supermarket cat litter (plus bonus points for cat name)

The good news is that we are getting a cat, but it will be this weekend! He's a young male tiger cat stray. The current caretakers say he likes unscented cat litter (will not go in the box if litter is scented). Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent supermarket litter that is clumping and unscented. I don't have time to get fancy or specialty litter with the timetable involved. [more inside]

Used Records in New York City

Finally, after 10 years I'm visiting new York City again. I guess the city have changed a lot. I'm there for about 10 days, and I'm really into used records. Can MeFi recommend good shops for used (or not) records? Perhaps other shops for turntable lovers? Thanks.

Should my kitchen sink be generating heat when it's turned off?

This morning when I went to use the kitchen sink, the floor around the sink was warm to the touch. I opened the cabinet under the sink and the air inside it was hot, and the bottles of household cleaners I store beneath the sink had condensation bubbles on the insides. The surrounding cabinets are warm too. This is is not normal. Before I email my landlord, is there any non-negative reason this could be happening? [more inside]

Why do I regret turning down this job opportunity?

Four months ago I was laid off from a company where I had worked for almost 15 years. I received a severance equivalent to 30 weeks of pay. About half of that was paid to me in bi-weekly paychecks while I could still technically be called an employee of the company. The other half will be paid in a heavily taxed lump sum check in the next week or so. more inside... [more inside]

What are the best, high-quality sites about Android?

What are the best news/opinions about Android in terms of quality of writing and analysis? I'm after sites that post relatively infrequently, but tend to produce high quality stuff when they do post: the Android equivalent of sites like MacStories, Daring Fireball, and Six Colors. What causes vibrating filaments in Edison bulbs?

A bar I visited the other day had old-school Edison bulbs hanging from the ceiling, and I noticed that in several of them, the filament was vibrating. And by vibrating I mean vibrating big time — swinging back and forth a full inch or so inside the bulb multiple times a second. The bartender didn't seem to know what caused it, but seemed to think it wasn't uncommon. Any idea? [more inside]

Best VOIP to replace home phone landline?

It seems like I am the last person on earth to give up my expensive residential landline. Cost efficiency: Programmable thermostat vs constant temperature

I've read so much conflicting information and opinions regarding this, I have no idea what to believe. Logic tells me that keeping the temperature high when we're home and awake, then dropping it when we're asleep or gone is the most efficient use of energy. But others have told me that the amount of work a furnace needs to go to bring a house (1450 sq ft for us) up a significant number of degrees daily is less efficient than simply maintaining a constant temperature. That doesn't make sense to me, but I've heard it from people whose opinion I respect. Help! [more inside]

Which of the several commercial DNA ancestry tests would be the best for a 44 year old man trying to find his African American relatives and ancestry. The man is adopted, his biological mother is white. He's met her but she remembers few details about his African American biological father, not enough to make him findable. Has anybody seen this photograph? Complication: boobs.

Three or four years ago I saw a photograph in an actual newspaper of a group of wetnurses and babies in an Italian orphanage. There were some rows of buxom young women in uniform, each one seated with a breast out feeding a baby. The young women all wore a kind of nurses cap and oddly, every single one of them had dark curly hair. There was an odd juxtaposition in the picture between the uniformity of the group - and they were pretty smart - and the intimacy of the action. The date must have been 1940's or 30's. Now I've tried googling this picture and while the searches have taken me to some unexpectedly alarming places, I've not found it. The closest I've got, in feeling and structure, is number 3 of 4 here; but this isn't it. So, consulting the diverse and extensive knowledges accumulated here, does anyone know the photograph and where I might see it again? [more inside]
