Drool, Brittannia

Several of our dog's incisors were starting to come loose, so our vet recommended pulling between 3-5 of them. Today was surgery day, and they ended up pulling 8 teeth! I'm not so much concerned about the aesthetics, but should we be worried about anything in particular with him having lost almost all of his front teeth? [more inside]

Learning to throw pots in the digital age

I lucked into a professional level potter's wheel for a great price this past weekend. While pottery is something I've been interested doing in my whole life, I've never actually used a wheel before. There are plenty of beginner classes and workshops around... but there are also a lot of videos on YouTube. Any reason I shouldn't have a go at it myself and put money towards tools/supplies/a kiln instead of spending it on a class? [more inside]

How can I play Netflix at double speed?

Are there Chrome or Firefox add-ons that allow one to play Netflix content at double/triple speed? Seems unlikely since Netflix utilizes Silverlight and Googling hasn't turned up any useful options, but I figured it was worth checking. Alternately, are there add-ons that allow double/triple speed for streaming video sites other than Youtube?

Fast and cheap wildflowers in Chicago?

In the midst of wedding preparations here in Chicago, I have totally whiffed on flowers. We want to Midwest prairie flower corsages and such for our wedding this Saturday based around some milkweed pods we've been saving. We tried Kennicott's to no avail because they only do wholesale. Any ideas for where on the northside of Chicago we could go to cheaply (or even for free, if we're ethically picking something) acquire wildflowers and grasses this week?

LCD TV is unhappy

My Samsung LA37B530 has developed a pale cast to the image as though the brightness was set too high, and the smoothing of some colours is also not up to sniff. Basically, it no longer looks like proper HDTV. In the event that it was inadvertently adjusted, I reset it to standard factory settings. The problem persists. Any bright ideas? Thanks!

Please help me ID this old sci-fi story

Here are a few facts about this old SF story whose author I can no longer recall. 1. It was written by a giant of mid-century SF whose name I can no longer recall. Not Sheckley, not Asimov. I thought it might be Damon Knight, but I can't find it in his work. 2. It's a story about a man who travels to the future as part of a gigantic relief effort to assist future men who are burying themselves in the earth. [more inside]

Adjusting the trigger pull on Shimano STX shifters?

I just put some new ergonomic grips on my mountain bike, and they're slightly thicker rubber than the older ones. The tiny bit of extra circumference now obstructs the pull of my trigger shifter. When I try to go into a higher gear there's not enough clearance for the trigger to engage the ratchet in the shifter and move the dérailleur. I can force it if I squeeze hard enough and push the lever back out, and the bike shifts gears fine, so the issue is not cable tension. My question: Is there a way to adjust the trigger pull to be slightly further away from the handlebars? [more inside]

geolocating question for techies out there

One of many painful aspects to the James Foley tragedy is that the US attempted rescue, but was in error as to the location of the hostages. I wonder - is there not some geolocating device, maybe even a microchip, that could be required for journalists and tourists/hikers entering a war zone? I can understand that it would be an intolerable risk for soldiers and spies, but Foley was leaving an Internet café when he was abducted - not trying to live a hidden life.

1970s science fiction short story about a young mother going crazy?

There's this science fiction story I can recall reading in at least one anthology, if not multiples. It is told from the perspective of a young mother who is going crazy dealing with her kid(s). The writing is very stark and bleak, but it's a fun story nonetheless. I am fairly certain the author was a woman. I believe it's from the late 60s or early to mid 1970s. [more inside]

Why does my rice cooker's power cable have 2 different amp ratings?

I need to replace the power cable for my rice cooker. The kitchen area of my apt is pretty small, and the cable was stupidly close to the stove and I burned a hole through the insulation.
