So Mr. Kitty and I are doing a vacation in Paris and want to set up some amazing reservations to look forward to. We will have one big blow, out once in a decade, kind of dinner. Where should we go? [more inside]
The good news is that we are getting a cat, but it will be this weekend! He's a young male tiger cat stray. The current caretakers say he likes unscented cat litter (will not go in the box if litter is scented). Does anyone have any recommendations for a decent supermarket litter that is clumping and unscented. I don't have time to get fancy or specialty litter with the timetable involved. [more inside]
Finally, after 10 years I'm visiting new York City again. I guess the city have changed a lot. I'm there for about 10 days, and I'm really into used records. Can MeFi recommend good shops for used (or not) records? Perhaps other shops for turntable lovers? Thanks.
I have several hundred pages (sleeves) of 35mm color negatives. A few years ago I started a project to scan-in all the negatives. But because of my own disorganization, the project has turned into a big mess. [more inside]
Does anyone have a good career counsellor in Toronto that can look over my resumé and come up with a good job hunting strategy? [more inside]
In August of this year, I heard a French (presumably Quebecois) song in a karaoke bar in Montreal and for some reason it's been bugging me that I can't remember at all what it was. Can someone help me identify it based on the following sketchy and probably mis-remembered details? [more inside]
This morning when I went to use the kitchen sink, the floor around the sink was warm to the touch. I opened the cabinet under the sink and the air inside it was hot, and the bottles of household cleaners I store beneath the sink had condensation bubbles on the insides. The surrounding cabinets are warm too. This is is not normal. Before I email my landlord, is there any non-negative reason this could be happening? [more inside]
Four months ago I was laid off from a company where I had worked for almost 15 years. I received a severance equivalent to 30 weeks of pay. About half of that was paid to me in bi-weekly paychecks while I could still technically be called an employee of the company. The other half will be paid in a heavily taxed lump sum check in the next week or so. more inside... [more inside]
I'm thinking about going to this John Cleese book signing at a midtown NYC Barnes & Noble. Is this going to be Black-Friday crazy, or merely annoying? [more inside]
My son is creating a new little family and grandma wants to give a small, sentimental gift to the children to help them remember and celebrate the day. [more inside]
What are the best news/opinions about Android in terms of quality of writing and analysis? I'm after sites that post relatively infrequently, but tend to produce high quality stuff when they do post: the Android equivalent of sites like MacStories, Daring Fireball, and Six Colors. (I know far more about iOS than I do Android, but should really know about both.)
A bar I visited the other day had old-school Edison bulbs hanging from the ceiling, and I noticed that in several of them, the filament was vibrating. And by vibrating I mean vibrating big time — swinging back and forth a full inch or so inside the bulb multiple times a second. The bartender didn't seem to know what caused it, but seemed to think it wasn't uncommon. Any idea? [more inside]
My spouse is trying to submit their D.Phil thesis to an online research archive. Archive wants all content to not be in breach of copyright. Thesis has a photograph in it which requires copyright permission but we're stumped on how to get it. What now? [more inside]
I've been out of the web dev loop for a while but am aware of (but have little practical experience with) various new platforms and packages from a design/technological architecture standpoint. I have two needs: a personal/professional home page and a data-driven purity-test-like quiz, both of which I want to make as clean/pro as possible. [more inside]
Please talk at me about the kind of terminology, phrasing, best practices and thought processes that help you not stick both feet in your mouth online (or IRL) when you are speaking to someone and are unsure of their gender, sexual orientation, relationship status, etc. [more inside]
It seems like I am the last person on earth to give up my expensive residential landline. I did sign up with Vonage but quickly cancelled when I realized I was being lied to and getting conflicting answers about fees/billing (then I read the horrible reviews about their customer service). I do not like talking on my cell phone and always grab for the landline when at home if I need to make an outgoing call. I want good quality (no delays, echoes, etc.), competitive price, good customer service and reliability (yes, I want it all!). [more inside]
Where to buy cufflinks and shirt studs online for my awesome new tuxedo? [more inside]
I've read so much conflicting information and opinions regarding this, I have no idea what to believe. Logic tells me that keeping the temperature high when we're home and awake, then dropping it when we're asleep or gone is the most efficient use of energy. But others have told me that the amount of work a furnace needs to go to bring a house (1450 sq ft for us) up a significant number of degrees daily is less efficient than simply maintaining a constant temperature. That doesn't make sense to me, but I've heard it from people whose opinion I respect. Help! [more inside]
I have a question about one scene in the series finale of Boardwalk Empire. Question and spoilers inside. [more inside]
About 8 months ago I asked a question about becoming a bartender on the fly, and the answers I received were fantastic, and really helped me become comfortable mixing drinks faster than I would have. But I have a few questions about something I didn't realize I would need help with: Tipping, or receiving tips. [more inside]
Family legend has it that our ancestors were Separdic Jews who fled Spain for Italy during the inquisition. My great-grandparents definitely came to Ellis Island from Italy, but they are as far back as we can trace. I am interested in seeing if this is true. I need help figuring out who should get tested and what test they should take. Family tree details inside. [more inside]
This is one of one things I've been meaning to get around to for years. I'm a Canadian with an Irish passport (acquired through my Grandparents) that expired 20 years ago. I'd like to renew it and if possible, confer Irish citizenship on my common law partner. [more inside]
I have been shooting with a DSLR for five years and apparently I still don't get focus, nor can I find anyone IRL to explain it to me. Halp? [more inside]
Which of the several commercial DNA ancestry tests would be the best for a 44 year old man trying to find his African American relatives and ancestry. The man is adopted, his biological mother is white. He's met her but she remembers few details about his African American biological father, not enough to make him findable. He is hoping that a DNA test might help him to find out more about his father and his father's family.
My partner becomes motion sick shortly after getting on the trolley. She feels very nauseated within a couple of minutes. The trolley tends to accelerate and decelerate rapidly at each stop, and when the trolley is underground the ride can be fairly bumpy. Is there anything she can do to prevent or treat this, ideally without having to take medication? [more inside]
I discovered this week that the closet light in my new home is wired in a questionable way, and I need to know if this is a problem. [more inside]
My car has an air bag that is subject to the big air bag recall. Will a faulty passenger side air bag sensor cause my dealer not to replace my (presumably) faulty driver's side air bag? [more inside]
I have a T-shirt with text in some kind of Arabic language, and I have no idea what it says (or even what language it says it in!) There's also a small triangular logo with an antelope and the word 'Zama'. Does anyone know A) what language it is, B) what it says and C) what the context is? [more inside]
For Halloween this year, my 11 year old son is being Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes. We've sorted out his costume, but I am having a hard time figuring out what to do with his hair. My son's hair, (seen here) is much longer than Calvin's. How can we style his hair, which he has no desire to cut, into a style that still evokes Calvin?
Can you still do a week's food shopping in one go? If you have moved to going to the grocery store more than once a week to buy things to cook that day or the next few days, what do you typically run out of, or is it more of an impulse buy? If you were able to have appliances or storage to help you keep food fresh or remember to use what you bought, what would you consider getting? Assume a typical English diet: meat, potatoes, greens, bread, tea, coffee, milk etc. [more inside]
I want to buy a nice copy of The Wind in the Willows as a gift. I went to AbeBooks, and there's about a million editions, and most of them don't have extensive pictures of the guts. [more inside]
My new Dell desktop with Windows 7 / 8.1 Pro arrived with no product key label on the box or anywhere else. I've bought several 7 / 8 PCs (not Dell) for work and this is a first. Before I descend into Dell Hell, could someone shed some light on this? [more inside]

So I have this DVD with accompanying copyright information, descriptive notes and disclaimers and I'd like to put it online so others can access it. The last time I did such a thing, I ripped it and converted to FLV and used JW Player. I could do that again but I wonder if that's what people at the end of 2014 would do. Are we in a post-flash world? Could I do something similar in a different format? (Even though I have some experience with this, please "explain like I'm 5.") [more inside]
I guess I'm 39 going on 9 but I need you to explain feelings please, and what I might be able to to about them. Can I stop/manage/fast-track the negative ones somehow? Illustrative example inside but I'd really like to hear broad principles please [more inside]
My daughter is having a slumber party for her birthday. I'm used to (and comfortable with) normal birthday parties: planning lots of fun activities, yummy things to eat and keeping order with bouncing children for a few hours, but I'm worried about having a half dozen 7 & 8 year olds sleeping here. Those of you have done it -- what's your advice? Anything that would help this go well? [more inside]

Hey swimmers. I'm loving lap swimming. And with colder weather coming, I'm wondering how to stay warm from pool to home (due to wet hair). [more inside]
Three or four years ago I saw a photograph in an actual newspaper of a group of wetnurses and babies in an Italian orphanage. There were some rows of buxom young women in uniform, each one seated with a breast out feeding a baby. The young women all wore a kind of nurses cap and oddly, every single one of them had dark curly hair. There was an odd juxtaposition in the picture between the uniformity of the group - and they were pretty smart - and the intimacy of the action. The date must have been 1940's or 30's. Now I've tried googling this picture and while the searches have taken me to some unexpectedly alarming places, I've not found it. The closest I've got, in feeling and structure, is number 3 of 4 here; but this isn't it. So, consulting the diverse and extensive knowledges accumulated here, does anyone know the photograph and where I might see it again? [more inside]
My (Greek Orthodox) aunt gave my mom this bracelet to give to me. It is one of those anti-"Evil Eye" bracelets. Attached to each end of the bracelet is this coin-like thing. I am having a hard time deciphering what is pictured on the coin and what it symbolizes. Any knowledgeable folks know more than Google about this? [more inside]
Can anyone tell me what's going on in this photo?
We rent a second-floor apartment in a two-story house. There is apparently a leak in the roof, and when there's a lot of rain (like right now, it's been pouring since last night!) water drips through our living room ceiling. It's not a HUGE leak, but it's right in the middle of the room, and the water is coming in right next to a light fixture. The property manager has been notified twice -- once a few months ago, and once today. He is ignoring us. Many many more details after the cut... [more inside]
My nephews and I seek your assistance in kicking butt in a pumpkin carving contest. Pumpkin shaped snowflakes inside. [more inside]
Recently I've been all about Sam Cooke's Live at the Harlem Square Club, Etta James Rocks the House, and James Brown Live at the Apollo. Can you recommend other live soul or R&B recordings that have the same kind of raw energy?

Our team is virtual and uses Google Calendar to see free/busy time between co-workers. One of our VPs loathes Google Calendar and instead uses Outlook (2010 on her laptop/2013 on her desktop). I'm passing out glow sticks and glowy spiders in lieu of candy for Halloween. A Facebook friend posted a link to the Teal Pumpkin Project about kids with food allergies and Halloween treats. So, yay, my treats are allergy-safe! But my house is definitely NOT a pristine allergy-free zone. Will this be an issue? I don't want to inadvertently poison some poor trick-or-treater. [more inside]
I'm not a morning person at all, I never have been, and I doubt I ever will be. Unfortunately, society refuses to acknowledge this, and even forces me to do things before midday. Because of this, I'd love to hear what you do that makes getting up into a somewhat pleasurable experience, rather than keep experiencing the Promethean torture I go through every morning. Photoshop Elements 8 will not import RAW files from my (new) camera, a Nikon D7100. The error message states that they are the wrong type of file. The same file type is imported without trouble from the unit it replaces (Nikon D40). What is causing this?
