Insanely crunchy fried chicken that stays insanely crunchy

Once, I made fried chicken, and it was as close to perfect as I've even made it. The crust nearly shattered when bitten into. It was almost unbearably crispy. I have absolutely no idea how I made it, and never made any notes as to what I did. If anyone out there has found the forbidden secrets of fried chciken, and more importantly, remembers what they did to get there, I would love to hear what you did. [more inside]

How do I figure out if cereal will be a cheap and nutritious baby food?

We provide additional food to nursing moms and toddlers, and supplementary formula for infants (don't start on breast is best, most of our moms do nurse, this is for babies with HIV+ moms etc). Our recent evaluation shows that the 6-18 months are not doing as well as the others because they are culturally too little to eat regular food and get more watered-down formula instead, sometimes with rice mixed in. We've got tiny funding to buy more food for them and our nurse is suggesting rice cereal designed for infants, but I have no clue how to evaluate them. [more inside]

Electronic-only European gift-giving ideas

I am in the US. My brother is in Europe on business, his first time out of the US, and will be there for about another six months. Right now he's in Germany, but the list of additional countries he'll go to later doesn't seem to be finalized. His birthday is coming up, and I want to send him a gift that won't generate logistical problems for him. [more inside]

What's that site

I remember discovering a site in, god, 2007 or 2008 I think, possible through Metafilter, that had a theme every month (I very much remember the theme 'Anarchy') and published a number of essays around that theme. Not essays by readers, essays by scholars. I think the essays somehow had to be written in reaction to each other. It was super interesting, but I lost track of it and now I don't know what it was called anymore, or even whether it still exists. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

How do I change the bulb in this light fixture?

Is this normal? Toddler day care edition

Mini-me is starting day care at a place that takes the toddlers to a local park every day. I'm cool with this (wearing him out FTW!) but they apparently have the class walk there — about six blocks through a dense urban area. I was a little surprised by this practice for such little kids (18-36 months). Husband is really concerned about the whole thing and I'm not sure what to think. Is this actually a totally reasonable thing for toddlers to do in a group care environment? [more inside]

Bipolar Oven

My oven is bipolar: when I follow the instructions for frozen pizza, it's done in about 66% of the time, i.e. instructions say 18min, it's done in 12, usually less - 18min would burn it to a crisp. Thicker things, like pork roasts or heating a pre-cooked ham, are barely tepid in the center at the time in their instructions, i.e. instructions say 45min, takes over an hour to get to the recommended temperature. The oven is a generic, in-every-apartment-I've-ever-had kind of stove. What's it's problem? [more inside]

I love having a moon phase widget on my android phone. Three days ago I noticed the one I had, had disappeared. I then downloaded a few others to try. Paid apps even! None of them change on the desktop(?) of the phone, indicating where the moon is in its cycle. Is this because I have mobile data turned off to save battery power? Or is there another reason? I also downloaded the app Sun and Moon but is it anywhere to be found on my phone except in My Apps to uninstall? Is it heck. What's going on?

My partner and I currently live in PA. Before moving here from CA, my partner sold a vehicle to a private party (I was not a part of this transaction). Why does McAfee have a problem with my website?

So I recently completed a project, and was sharing the news with people on Facebook - but Facebook blocked the link to my website because it was apparently on some spammy/malware blacklist. I did some investigation, and my site comes up clean on every security scan thing I tried, except McAfee SiteAdvisor. It seems likely that it's a false positive, possibly due to my shared hosting. If there's a legitimate security issue, though, I'd like to find out what it is so I can fix it - but I don't know how I can do that. [more inside]
