Thanks to MetaFilter, I am going on a Holocaust trip, sans my beloved husband, to Poland and Israel. We leave soon. It's a group trip, but we'll have two independent evenings (Saturday and Sunday) and a free afternoon (Monday) in Krakow, where the group is staying at the Sheraton. Suggestions, hive mind? I'm fine with eating etc. on my own, just need some suggestions on where.
So, I have a standard Notes app on my iPhone and iPad. Lots of problems lately with reading/deleting mail on both, particularly with Yahoo!, so I deleted my Yahoo! and Gmail accounts and downloaded the particular apps for each instead. Then I made a note in the Notes app and to my dismay saw that most of my notes had disappeared. I googled this and learned that the Notes app may have assigned my notes to the email accounts I deleted (why?) but searching those online email accounts has only uncovered some, not all, my missing notes. iCloud doesn't have them either. Are they gone forever, hive mind? Can you think of something I've missed?
I am going on a Holocaust trip to Poland and Israel in July. (See this earlier question.) My husband says I should buy Euros now because the Euro is at about 90 to 100 dollars and a quantitative easing program is supposed to start on Monday. [more inside]
So, I have a chance to join a small group trip to tour Holocaust sites in Warsaw, Krakow, and Israel. My husband is not going to come. I doubt I'll know any of the other travelers. I'm generally fine with solo travel. [more inside]
So, I went on a business trip and my well-loved Burberry black trench raincoat, which I bought new at a department store 5 or 6 years ago, was stolen. I would really like to replace it. The catch is that I can't figure out just what the fabric was. It was soft to the touch, almost silky, with a lustrous shine (not the high shine of a sateen), and water resistant. It definitely was not the classic Burberry cotton gabardine, which is much rougher to the touch. I failed at figuring this out via Google. Can the hive mind help?
So, I know that MeFi bikers are strong and fearless and use their gears and believe in bike commuting. But my particular commute is very long and not all that safe for biking, so instead I have used my beautiful Trek to ride to the train or bus park and ride. Which is fine, except that the longer ride, to the train, is killing me due to two monster hills. So, I'm really getting interested in an electric bike, and I am thinking specifically about this one or this one. Can the hive mind opine on what it is like to own an electric bike and whether I am making good choices? I'm actually OK with spending a few thousand because it is still cost effective. Other pertinent info is that I am a petite woman and my commute to the train is often going to be wet/dark.
I love cowboy boots, and on a recent trip to Portland let my lust overcome me and bought some. I'm normally a conservative dresser (suits, dresses, skirts with jackets) during the week, and a jeans and Tshirt kind of person on weekends. Suggestions on what to wear with the new boots? They are mid-calf. One pair are a gorgeous rich brown with tooled roses and the other is brown and black tooling.
So, in a few weeks we are flying from Seattle to Chicago, then driving to Milwaukee, to attend a ball game with friends at the Brewers ball park. We've never been to Milwaukee. It's a short trip -- just for the weekend. Any suggestions from the Hive Mind on where to stay and eat and what to do besides going to our scheduled game?
So, I have this very nice cell phone sleeve (number 11) -- but because it is open at one end, my IPhone 5 is prone to making suicidal plunges out of it. I need a small strap, perhaps an inch and a half long, preferably with a quick release like Velcro or a snap. And it needs to glue on securely and not be hideous on my case. Any ideas, craft-y MeFis? My Google fu got me nowhere.
So, I ate some truly delicious Ethiopian food (lentils, cabbage and potato, collard greens, and okra, plus the bread) I got as takeout from a local place on Friday evening. About 8 hours later I awoke feeling dreadful. I threw up four times over the next 8 hours or so, and I am one of those people who virtually never vomits. I also felt really sick, with a major stomach ache. I have been feeling gradually better since, and am back at work today, but still feel trembly, nauseated and kinda green around the edges. And no bowel movements to date. When am I going to feel like myself again? Do I have to call my doctor?
So, every year I can't figure out what to put in my beloved Bear's holiday stocking, and this year I have total Stocking Stuffer Block. I so don't want to delay getting shopping for this done. Details about him below. [more inside]
So, I love checking news and at last I have an RSS feed in my browser. What RSS news feeds do you recommend?
So, I'm listening to Jody Piccoult's The Storyteller, which has a number of incredible elements although the very real events of the Holocaust in Poland lie at the center of it. And she has a narrator relate that the night after his wife's transport from the Lodz ghetto, her husband's hair turns entirely white. From grief, not washing out hair dye. But isn't that actually impossible? I can't believe this is a Real Thing.
I'm intrigued by a coupon offer for 60 minutes doing a sensory deprivation float at a local spa. Have you ever done this? Is it worth $29?
I can print fine using a app from my Ipad 2 -- I just installed the printer app on my work PC, which is linked to my printer, and on my Ipad 2. Voila! But I can't figure out how to print to my work printer from my beautiful Macbook Pro. [more inside]
I've retired my old Windows laptop and sprung for a new Mac Pro Retina with a 13.3 screen. It is gorgeous and fast. But my experience with Apple is limited to using an Itouch and Ipad 2. Is there a great detailed Pro Retina for Dummies guide, or especially great website for navigating what this machine can do? And what apps or tricks or tips would be especially helpful to install or learn as I explore this machine? Many thanks, all you Mac users.
We are doing a little bathroom remodeling. Replacement floor and shower stall are set, but the installation people told us it would be cheaper if we bought our own shower heads. So I ordered this. I forgot to also order a shower faucet control. Help! What is what I need called, exactly, and where can I get it?
So, the good news is that the beautiful Turkish area rug I bought in Turkey arrived safe and sound about three months ago. But it was neatly folded in half longways before it was rolled, and the center crease is still there, after plenty of walking on, vacuuming, and straightening of the rug. How do I get rid of the crease?
Knitting filter: Looking for your suggested relatively easy patterns to knit soft, warm socks ankle or slightly higher length socks for myself (normally wear US women's 9-11 sock) and my Bear (long narrow male feet, unsure of his sock size). We both are somewhat allergic to wool. [more inside]
How can I tell if almond milk has gone bad?
We're staying for four nights in Barcelona in mid September. First visit for both of us. Really would appreciate hotel/B&B recommendations, and of course what sights and restaurants the hive mind recommends.
I'm looking for a meaningful and beautiful, but inexpensive, gift for a young woman who has successfully completed a treatment-oriented sentence, remaining drug and alcohol free for two years. She also aced her treatment program and has found and retained a good job. [more inside]
I recently read a pretty interesting book review of a book that asserts people make decisions based on their own social morality, not logic, reason or education. But now I can't find said book review or remember where I read it. Help, hivemind!
I cannot figure out how to wear a necklace I bought (at a mall stand in New Orleans). It consists of one long silver chain with two sparkly Swarovski beads at the ends and a silver open loop in the middle. Here's a couple of pictures. [more inside]
Very happy owner of Ipad2. But, inspired by this AskMeFi, wondering if I should be eager to acquire the new Ipad3. What say you, well informed hive mind?
My husband and I are taking this trip in China and Hong Kong (with some extra days on our own in advance in Beijing, and some more afterward in Hong Kong) in October. We're aiming to pack light but I'm starting to plan just what that means, in terms of both clothing and electronics. Can you help? [more inside]
Is there a good solution for putting smartphone and its GPS in (preferably waterproof) view on my bike? My Google Fu is failing me.
Yet another special snowflake question about what bike to get, from a bicycle noob. I'd like to get out and bicycle in our (hilly) neighborhood. If I love my bike to be, I may commute on it to the train, about 7 miles from our home, or for errands. I haven't really biked since I was a kid and owned a racing 10 speed. I'm a small fairly thin woman (5'2".) I'm fine with staying on roads and hence am not taken with mountain bikes, which strike me as clunky. A little more inside. [more inside]
Very happy owner of a new Ipad2 (with 3g). Are you an Ipad user/owner? What are your absolute favorite apps? And why? I have looked at a lot of prior threads asking for best apps for particular purposes, including this one about best apps for gifting, but I'm actually just interested in finding out the apps MeFi people love the most.
My old Ipod Classic has been slow to start lately, and at times couldn't be stopped without a reset. Today, however, it started making a sad sound reminiscent of a spinning disk scraping against cardboard, interrupted by occasional quiet mournful beeps and a cute icon of a sad Ipod, along with the apple website support address. It does not seem to be able to restart, no matter what. So -- do I take it somewhere (?where?) for repairs/refurbishment or give it a decent burial -- and if the latter, what does one do with an Ipod loaded with personal stuff which can't be restarted or wiped?
Black tie wedding tomorrow. Thanks to my last AskMeFi, now have (rented) long black dress, silver open toe sandals, black seqin wrap, glittery silver necklace and bracelet, and handsome Bear husband escort in appropriate (rented) tuxedo . . . and only now I realize I'd better get a pedicure. But I have no idea what color my toes should be. So, toe-nail-polish-wearing hivemind, can you please tell me what color polish I should get for this outfit?
We've been invited to an evening wedding in Seattle area at a swanky hotel which is black tie. Not our usual venue at all. Neither of us wants to spend lots to dress for a single social occasion. And my husband is a big guy with a long torso and short legs, so he is not easy to fit anyway. Thoughts on where to go and what to do to get dressed affordably?
I am the proud owner of a new Kindle 3, and am already loving the many things it does, including the early AM delivery of the NYT to it every day. So now I'm eying the blogs that can be e-delivered to te device too. Which, if any, does the hive mind recommend?
Looking for a good guitar teacher or course in the Seattle or north of Seattle area. I'd like to learn classical guitar on the nice instrument my husband bought me some time ago, which has been gathering dust. I used to play some guitar -- chords, strumming and some singing -- but so long ago that I'm back to being a rank amateur. Does anyone have any recommendations?
So, we have this nice new HDTV with internet. Sound isn't bad but I'd like to add speakers to enliven TV watching, DVD use and Xbox/Kinect use. I can't hook up my old computer speakers, which are good quality, because this TV only has an optical port. [more inside]
Hanukah has arrived and I'd like to make latkes and apple sauce. I did read this thread. But my goal is a result that is tasty but healthy -- that is, I really would like to avoid greasiness and oiliness. Does anyone know a scrumptious lower fat recipe?
Warning: wait to read this question until tomorrow if you are in Learned League. So, today one of the Learned League questions was, What is the y-intercept of the line with the following equation?: 3y-11x = 39. I couldn't get any further than y = 13 + 3 2/3 x or y = 13 +3.66666x. Actually it appears the response is 13. How does one get to the right response for this question?
I'm lucky enough to have a workout area in our house. Have an old TV and DVD player and a good collection of workouts, free weights, and other fitness stuff, but I'm starting to think about adding a Playstation Move or Xbox Kinect or WII. My interest is in workouts, not other games. Has anyone tried any or all? Which, if any, would you recommend? Or should I just stick with current setup? [more inside]
Why twelve jurors? Why not eleven, or thirteen? My google-fu has only uncovered suggestions that it is because there were twelve apostles. I can't find a reliable source for that and it seems odd. Does anyone know?
I bought these two new shirts for work. I love them, but their fluffiness and length makes figuring out what to wear with them more of a challenge than I expected. I've only thought of one decent combination: straight skirt with boyfriend length sweater and a shirt. (My workplace is conservative, meaning suits and skirts or pants with blazers are the norm. Bare arms won't work.) Thoughts, fashion hivemind?
I'm not on Facebook and don't want to be. Nonetheless, everytime my Droid boots up, it informs me my Facebook login failed. How do I stop my Droid from trying to log me into Facebook and sending me irritating messages about it?
My husband and I will be staying on Grand Bahama Island in mid December this year. We'll be renting a car. We like beaches, snorkeling, national parks, hiking, good eating, gardens and animal watching. Any suggestions for things we should do, places we should eat?
A man I have known for many years and respect and like greatly just let me know in a funny, intelligent and informative email that he has Parkinson's Disease. [more inside]
Seattle area filter: So, we have these dear friends who throw a flamingo themed party every year. I don't have much bright pink and green in my wardrobe, and no flamingo accessories like earrings and shoes either. (I DO own a pink feather boa.) Any ideas on where to shop this weekend in Seattle area for flamingo stuff?
My husband and I really want to go to China, this fall or next fall. All of our Chinese friends strongly recommend that we take a tour, rather than just do it on our own as we normally do. But -- which tour company should we use? Who is reputable, affordable, and won't pack us in with a mob of 40-50?
I've developed a real passion for healthy style stir frying lately, perhaps because it works so well with my awesome rice cooker. I've been using my excellent All Clad frying pan on our ceramic stove top, but am thinking about stepping up to an electric wok . (I know MeFis love cast iron, but I don't.) I'm interested in electric wok recommendations, and also in people's favorite stir fry cookbooks.
What is wrong with Firefox? When I use it, I can't favorite in MetaFilter, look at Yahoo! inbox except in old Classic mode, see any of my gadgets on igoogle, or even tweet in Twitter. Why does every update make it more dysfunctional, and how do I fix these specific problems?
I killed my Logitech Ipod speakers, which I carted with me whenever I traveled, by leaving them plugged into a Madrid outlet with my transformer setting on "high." Doh! I love having good portable speakers with me when I travel, and am looking to replace with either this Logitech model or these Bose speakers. [more inside]
60s Filter: My husband has an upcoming reunion for his high school and is putting together a long playlist of the songs on AM radio in the late 60s. (Yeah, we're old-ish.) He's looking for more female artists. Name and song suggestions, please?
For the past 3 years, off and on, I've had pain in the left shoulder blade area, radiating toward my left rib cage. There are no triggers like breathing or laughter. What I feel is sharp stabbing spasms at unpredictable intervals. It is mild in the morning, intense by evening. Usually icing takes care of it, but not always. I've seen my doctor, gotten massages, gotten acupuncture, tried exercise and stretching -- but the pain returns. Massage helps most. Any ideas, hive mind?
