Looking for a place where I can donate a wedding dress in NYC. Worn once (natch), was cleaned after use and has been safely kept in plastic ever since. Designer is Alvina Valenta. Size is probably a 10, 12, or 14. Also has a veil. Purchased at Kleinfeld's; total cost was probably around $3,000. Only issue is that it is from 2006 (sites like Bridal Garden say they'll only accept dresses bought in last 5 years). However, style is very classic (dress is off-white).
Seeking an NYC bar for a gathering of around eight people in their mid-to-late 30s. Requirements: quiet enough to talk; spacious enough that we can all congregate in one spot or will take reservations; in downtown Manhattan (roughly speaking); reasonably accessible by subway a big plus. Difficulty: event planned for a Saturday night, around 8 PM, and I don't expect everyone to show up at the same time (which makes reservations tricky). Thanks!
Seeking suggestions for good stores in NYC to buy high-quality kitchen knives where you can test them out before purchasing. Even if they don't let you actually cut or chop anything, are there places that at least let you hold the knives in your hand, to get a sense of the grip/feel/weight, etc.? Thanks!
Seeking replacement for Echofon for Firefox. This little Twitter client sat unobtrusively as a button in your browser and would pop up a handy, no-frills pane to check recent tweets. Unfortunately, it no longer works. I'd love something similarly lightweight that integrates with your browser (I use Firefox for Mac), though if a browser-integrated client is impossible to find, I'd welcome any suggestions for good, simple Mac-compatible Twitter clients. Thank you! [more inside]
Seeking Adobe Acrobat replacement for Mac OS X. I have Acrobat 8 Standard for Windows, which has served me well. But Adobe only offers their "Pro" version for Mac, which costs way more than I want to spend ($450), and it's also more than I need. So I'm looking for an alternative; free is great, but willing to pay for a solid software package. Intuitive and easy-to-use is a big plus. List of features I tend to rely on most in the "More Inside" section. [more inside]
Game of Thrones: I recently finished watching the second season of the HBO show. Does the second book in the series contain any spoilers for what might happen in the third season of the TV show? [more inside]
Craft cocktails in Providence, RI? Looking for any craft cocktail bars in the city that you care to recommend, though especially in the downtown area, if any exist there. Thanks.
Sports game summaries by email: Does the kind of service I'm looking for exist? I'm looking for a website where I can choose my favorite teams, then get a daily email each morning with a capsule summary of any games my teams have played the prior day. [more inside]
Flowers online: Looking for recommendations for websites which overnight flowers direct from the farm (rather than florist shops which happen to sell online). Not looking for anything major for an event—just a place that will ship a bouquet for Valentine's Day, birthdays, etc. Thanks!
PDFs on Firefox for Mac: No matter what hacks I try, it seems that I cannot get the PDF Plugin for Firefox on Mac OS X to work with either Firefox 9 or Firefox 10 beta. I feel like I must be doing something wrong because evidently other folks have gotten it to work. Would be grateful if anyone could walk me through the best way to get this extension working again. Korean restaurant recommendations near Spa Castle in College Point, Queens? Vegetarian friendly a plus. Thanks.
Kosher substitute for salt pork? We want to make an America's Test Kichen recipe for Thanksgiving turkey. It calls for salt pork to be laid along the back of the turkey during the first part of the roasting process (with the breast-side down), like so. ATK says this is called "barding" the turkey, which they say makes the bird "self-basting." [more inside]
NY Jets/NFL Network issue. The Jets play the Denver Broncos on Thursday, Nov. 17. The game will be broadcast by the NFL Network. My cable provider, Time Warner, does not carry the NFL Network. What are my options for watching the game? I am in Manhattan. Thanks.
Halloween costume filter: Inspired by this AskMe, my wife & I have decided to go for Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead)-themed costumes. Interested in any and all ideas both for costumes themselves and face-painting patterns (and floral accessories!). A few possibilities we've been looking at: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5. But open to anything. Thanks!
Halloween costume filter: My wife and I (couple in our early/mid 30s) are thinking about going to this Halloween party (currently second item down), titled "Masquerade Macabre." The organizers' suggested themes for costumes are below the fold. More inclined toward renting, but DIY is possible, too. Prefer an idea that works for a couple, but any suggestions appreciated! [more inside]
Cape May, NJ filter: We're visiting Cape May for the first time this Thurs-Sun for our fifth wedding anniversary. We were hoping to make this a beach/pool trip, but unfortunately, the weather looks pretty miserable. Any suggestions on activities/locations in the area that we can enjoy despite the rain? Restaurant suggestions also appreciated. [more inside]
So what is "the most dominant" fighting style? Many years ago, I read that one of the driving forces behind mixed martial arts/ultimate fighting was an interest in answering questions like, "Who is the better fighter? The boxer who just whales on his opponent, or the karate black belt who is adept at a broad range of attacks and defenses?" This question of course could be applied to any pair of different styles, and of course the ultimate question is, "Which is the best overall?" [more inside]
Vacation filter: My wife & I would like to take a three-day-long weekend trip for our fifth anniversary the second weekend in September (not Labor Day). Want to do nothing but laze on a beach within either a 3-4 hour drive or flight (non-stop only) from NYC. Looking for suggested destinations & hotels/resorts. Some more details inside. [more inside]
Game of Thrones filter: I recently finished watching the first season of the HBO show (and enjoyed it very much). Is it possible to read the eponymous first book in the series without giving away any spoilers for what might happen in the second season of the TV show? That is to say, is season one coterminous with book one? [more inside]
Camping near Montreal, Quebec: Looking for a campsite that allows dogs (not just service dogs). Also would like to be able to go fishing. Scenic a plus. (In case it matters, there are six in our group, plus one dog.) Thanks!
USB hub for Macbook Air - can you recommend one? I just need something I can plug the usual array of peripherals into: iPod, iPad, SuperDrive, camera, external keyboard, mouse, printer, etc. (not necessarily all at once). I don't think I need anything fancy like extra hard drive storage built in, but open to all ideas. Thanks.
Kosher for Passover hot sauce? I love spicy foods and am a Tabasco addict. Passover's just around the corner, but I've never been able to find a KfP hot sauce. If you know of any, you will be my hero. (Note that I'm specifically looking for something certified as Kosher for Passover, not merely Kosher.) Thanks!
Dragon Age: Origins on new MacBook Air: I believe my system meets or exceeds the required specs, but even on the lowest graphical settings, the game runs intolerably slowly. Is there anything I can do? Full technical specs inside. [more inside]
Mac peripherals filter: Just bought a MacBook Air. Looking for an external mouse and keyboard when I want to use it at my desk (plugged into my external monitor). What are your favorite Mac mice and keyboards? USB or Bluetooth are options. Thanks.
St. Martin / St. Maarten filter: My wife and I are vacationing there from Feb. 8 to Feb. 13. Restaurant suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also interested in general suggestions for things to do/see. [more inside]
NFL on the go: I'm going to be on Amtrak's Acela from NYC to Boston on Monday night. I want to be able to watch the Monday Night Football game between the Jets and the Patriots. The Acela has wifi, and I'll have my laptop. I will also have my Droid phone. Is there any way for me to watch the game live? Thanks.
Microsoft Office 2007 filter: Can you recommend a program/plugin (or the like) which will replace the "ribbon" interface with a traditional menu interface? Free is ideal, but for-pay is okay, too. Running Windows XP. Thanks.
NYC restaurant filter: Taking an elderly, out-of-town couple (that we don't know well) out to dinner. We'd like to take them somewhere reasonably nice (cost not a concern), but we do know that they prefer plainer foods that are easy on the digestive system. Manhattan required, midtown preferred. A little extra detail inside. [more inside]
Looking for software which will give me a report of every site I've ever linked to on my blog. [more inside]
Red Dead Redemption: The reviews of this game have been so exceptional that I think I might like to get it. However, I own neither an Xbox 360 nor a PlayStation 3 and would like advice about which console to consider buying. (A little more inside.) [more inside]
NYC restaurant filter: I'm looking for a good brunch place near Penn Station. I'd prefer a place that either takes reservations, or tends to have minimals waits on Saturday mornings. Thanks!
NYC restaurant filter: Looking for restaurants in the city which prominently feature egg dishes, or just have excellent egg-based dishes on the menu. Thanks!
Recipe Filter: We have over a pound of smoked salmon in our fridge. Looking for suggestions on what we can do with it! [more inside]
NYC filter: Looking for a bar on the Upper East Side (preferably east 80s/90s) which can accomodate a group of ~50-70. My high school class is having its 15th reunion, which will start off at our school and then progress to an after-party at a bar at around 9/9:30pm on a Friday in June. So a private room would work, as would a bigger bar which could simply accomodate a mass influx. Anything from divey to schmancy is a possibility. Thanks!
Excel question: I have a list of values, sorted from lowest to highest. I want to rank them. But I have a specific issue with regard to ties, and I'd like to be able to craft an Excel formula which will deal with this automatically, if possible. Full explanation below the fold. [more inside]
NYC snow day! Where can I buy a sled on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, and where are the best places to go sledding in Central Park? Thanks!
Excel question: I need a row number to automatically increment as I copy a formula horizontally across columns. Sample spreadsheet downloadable here, or viewable as a Google Doc here. Further details inside. [more inside]
Mapping question: I have a list of (imaginary) cities. I also know each city's as-the-crow-flies distance from every other city on the list. Based on this data alone, I would like to create a (hypothetical) map that shows all of these cities in their proper locations. I recognize that that the map's "rotation" would be arbitrary based on where & how you start plotting, but it seems that you should be able to plot out the relationships between cities properly. Is there software that can help me do this? [more inside]
New York City/Logan's Run filter: Where in NYC can I obtain some cheapo blinking red jewels that resemble the "life clocks" from the movie Logan's Run (which hopefully can be affixed to the palm with some sort of adhesive)? Close-up pic here. Willing to cannibalize some other sort of trinket if it contains such a jewel. Thanks!
Twitter question: Is there a tool which will let me see who the people I follow are themselves following, in aggregate? Of course, you can see who a given person follows, but so far as I know, you can only look at one account at a time. I'd like to see this information all grouped together in one place, and ideally sorted by popularity (i.e., with the sites followed by the most people toward the top). Thanks.
NYC KaraokeFilter: Looking for a great karaoke place in Manhattan to hold a birthday party for about 20 or so people. We'd like to rent a private room. A big English songlist is a must, and the place should serve alcohol. Cool & loungey is a major plus. Thanks! [more inside]
I have a six-year-old Dell Latitude D600 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 GPU. I know it's an old machine and an old graphics chip, but I'd like to consider getting an external monitor. What are my options, if any? [more inside]
401(k) Question: I've been offered a job where new employees are eligible to enroll in what the company calls its "401(k)/Profit Sharing plan" after a year on the job. The firm has open enrollment for the plan twice a year - Jan. 1 & July 1. They've asked me to start working in the middle of next month, which means I wouldn't be eligible to participate in the plan until Jan. 1, 2011 - just under 1.5 years away. Is it worth asking if they can grant me slightly early eligibility for the July 1, 2010 enrollment date? [more inside]
An old problem that I figured was more-or-less permanently in my past has reared its head. Even though I graduated from college a decade ago and have since gone to law school, a prospective employer is demanding my college transcript. I did poorly in college - I got three Fs and had to take a year off at my school's insistence. My question is, when I send along my transcript, should I include any kind of explanatory note, or just leave things be? (A few more details inside.) [more inside]
