I need to have repairs done on an antique clock in the Los Angeles area, but I'm unsure who would be reputable. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding a good place to get an initial estimate? Or is there a way to find good reviews for this kind of sevice?

My car, for the first time in 12 years, did not pass an emissions inspection in California. Right before this, my oil light had started to periodically blink. On inspection, my oil was very (very) low. I filled it back up after the test. What are the chances that this caused the high emissions levels?

How does one monitor accreditation for a school at a university? A job description lists monitoring accreditation standards for a school -- both regionally and also with a particular accrediting body for that discipline (say, like APA for psychology). It also must take into account oversight of extension campus accreditation. What would you assume this responsibility requires?

My life is very, very busy. My wife and daughter and I have decided that for the time being, we'll make some sacrifices, mainly in terms of time, to realize some important things for our family. What sorts of things can I do for them, in the "in-between" moments when scurrying around, that will let them know how much I appreciate and am thinking about them?

I've heard/read quite a bit about how Steve Wozniak's designs for the Apple were unique and elegant (e.g., Revolution in the Valley, or
here.) In layman's terms, what were examples of his designs, compared to other conventions of the day? What about them incited admiration?

Is there a program that would allow me to display an animated .gif on a Windows desktop? I envision it as looking similar to Windows' Slide Show widget, with a simple border, but with the ability to display the animated image file.

Is there a name for a literary device that states something using very sparse details, yet the observant reader knows there is a history behind it that informs the situation in a significant way? I'm not thinking of understatement (as this seems to be more about irony) or paralipsis. It would be a simple, unadorned statement of reality, almost in passing, that carries deeper implications for the narrative than may be realized by the unobservant reader. What would I call this?

We are purchasing a home, which should close by the end of the month. We have also finished our taxes for the year. We will qualify for the $8000 first time home buyer tax credit. Is it possible to amend our taxes and get the credit for the 2009 tax year, even though we completed the purchase in 2010?

We are buying a condo, and we just did the home inspection today. While there, a small cockroach (and possibly a second one) scurried out from a lower level cabinet. Should this be a dealbreaker, or can they adequately be dealt with? In most every respect, the condo struck me as being pretty clean and in good shape. I live in LA, and from what we've been told, this is a pretty normal pest problem.
