What is the known relationship between glucose intolerance (that can lead to diabetes, if I understand correctly) and oxygen? Specifically, I'm curious if lower oxygen levels lead to glucose intolerance, or the other way around. [more inside]
I'm looking for a poem that uses a play on words to find rhymes for both silver and orange, I believe within the same poem. For example, I think the use of "door-hinge" is used to rhyme with orange. I can find a bunch of poems out there that play with "unrhymable" language in this way, but I thought there was a shorter, catchy one that took on silver and orange in one verse. Maybe five lines or so, maybe a limerick? Sound familiar?

We are looking to buy a new oven/stove that is 30" wide, but the spot that it will go is going to be 34" wide, which leaves a 2" gap on each side, in the middle of a longer counter. Is there a way to do this such that it will not look too weird, without redoing all of our counter tops and lower cabinets? It would have to be more cosmetic than structural, as that width is pretty much a given.
I have a month-to-month account with Virgin Mobile, and I switched my phones recently by calling in and providing a unique identification number for my new phone. Everything worked great, my phone works great, and this was all done with the phone not having a SIM card installed. My problem now is that the phone thinks that it needs a SIM card, and gives me a notification regularly that "4G LTE will not work" as "SIM/UICC is removed". [more inside]
I have a good friend who is moving overseas with his family for a few years as part of his job. I would like to send him a care package shortly after he gets there that will be encouraging to him. I have a few ideas, based on what I know about him personally over the years. What other kinds of things might be encouraging for a big change-in-life situation like this? [more inside]

Would anyone be able to help me identify this font here? No luck scouring the internet. Thank you!
I've seen "find that vaguely remember movie magic" happen here before with only the slightest of clues, so here goes. My wife and I watched a movie back in 2001. I'd say it came out within five years prior to that date. [more inside]
Is there anywhere left in the world to buy Vanilla Float (not Cherry Vanilla) Dr. Pepper? It was a limited version Dr. Pepper this year, and my wife has mourned the drinking of her last can this week. Amazon and ebay seem to be slim pickings. Is there anywhere I haven't considered? Is there a special rare soda distributor that would have it in stock?
What literature from 2014 would you consider to be the best? I'm looking for page turners that tempt you to stay up late at night and exceed your expectations to a great degree. Fiction, non-fiction, short stories, space opera, graphic novel, anything goes. I'd like the best of the year to enjoy over break, and I'd like the recommendations to come from other like-minded mefites.
Are you aware of any schools or universities that allow faculty to retain intellectual property rights to their course materials that are used online, and perhaps also receive royalties from the school for its use, above and beyond a normal faculty contract? [more inside]
Is there an Android Widget that will allow me to display a subset of data from Google Spreadsheets? I keep track of my budget in a spreadsheet, and I would like to display the balances in a quick way on my phone without actually having to open the Google Sheets application. [more inside]

Regarding the gift tax, the IRS indicates that a gift does not count against the annual exclusion ($14,000), and is not taxable against the giver, if it is gifted towards a tuition payment. Would this also be the case if it was gifted to pay a student loan for someone directly to their lending institution?
I bought a new computer and realized that the power supply does not have a dedicated six pin cable for my video card. It does, however, have two sata cables coming from it (like this) that are situated in reserve for an extra bay device and also an extra hard drive. Can I use an adapter to sufficient convert them as a power source for a six pin Radeon HD 6850? If so, would it require a converter for both sata connections, or just one?

I need to have repairs done on an antique clock in the Los Angeles area, but I'm unsure who would be reputable. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding a good place to get an initial estimate? Or is there a way to find good reviews for this kind of sevice? [more inside]
My car, for the first time in 12 years, did not pass an emissions inspection in California. Right before this, my oil light had started to periodically blink. On inspection, my oil was very (very) low. I filled it back up after the test. What are the chances that this caused the high emissions levels? [more inside]
How does one monitor accreditation for a school at a university? A job description lists monitoring accreditation standards for a school -- both regionally and also with a particular accrediting body for that discipline (say, like APA for psychology). It also must take into account oversight of extension campus accreditation. What would you assume this responsibility requires? [more inside]

My life is very, very busy. My wife and daughter and I have decided that for the time being, we'll make some sacrifices, mainly in terms of time, to realize some important things for our family. What sorts of things can I do for them, in the "in-between" moments when scurrying around, that will let them know how much I appreciate and am thinking about them? [more inside]
I've heard/read quite a bit about how Steve Wozniak's designs for the Apple were unique and elegant (e.g., Revolution in the Valley, or here.) In layman's terms, what were examples of his designs, compared to other conventions of the day? What about them incited admiration?

Is there a program that would allow me to display an animated .gif on a Windows desktop? I envision it as looking similar to Windows' Slide Show widget, with a simple border, but with the ability to display the animated image file.

Is there a name for a literary device that states something using very sparse details, yet the observant reader knows there is a history behind it that informs the situation in a significant way? I'm not thinking of understatement (as this seems to be more about irony) or paralipsis. It would be a simple, unadorned statement of reality, almost in passing, that carries deeper implications for the narrative than may be realized by the unobservant reader. What would I call this?

We are purchasing a home, which should close by the end of the month. We have also finished our taxes for the year. We will qualify for the $8000 first time home buyer tax credit. Is it possible to amend our taxes and get the credit for the 2009 tax year, even though we completed the purchase in 2010? [more inside]
We are buying a condo, and we just did the home inspection today. While there, a small cockroach (and possibly a second one) scurried out from a lower level cabinet. Should this be a dealbreaker, or can they adequately be dealt with? In most every respect, the condo struck me as being pretty clean and in good shape. I live in LA, and from what we've been told, this is a pretty normal pest problem.
