Heart attacks in my past, take my half aspirin every day, eat good-guy fats, no junk food, blah blah blah, etc and etc. I know that dark chocolate is supposed to be good also but I absolutely can *not* have sweetened dark chocolate in my home even overnight -- no willpower in the face of sweetened dark chocolate, like none. Zero. Zip. Zed. [more inside]
Am I gaining all the nutritional value from oats, quinoa, and flax seeds which I've ground fine and stirred into food? Does cooking these foods unlock beneficial nutrients that I'm not getting by simply grinding and eating uncooked? And: How much flax seed daily to get the needed good-guy omega-3 and omega-6 fats from them? [more inside]

Seriously considering buying Virgin Mobile LG Optimus V (android 2.2) phone tomorrow, would/will be my first foray into any phone even beginning to resemble smart. My main question: how difficult is this phone to set up to use Google Voice telephone number over wi-fi, calls in-bound and out. [more inside]
Anyone with a cell phone can be tracked—their location, where they've been, who they've called, texts, etc and etc. A friend told me that there now location chips in every new vehicle sold in the US—is this true? Also: How long before the cars locations starts getting stored somewhere? And: How difficult is it to disable these chips in cars/trucks, can I do it myself, and/or how much does it cost to have this done? [more inside]
Firefox / WIN7: I type in two hyphens IE -- and word processor (LibreOffice Writer) changes them into M dash IE – which is what I would love to see happen in Firefox. Alternately, if this cannot be done, is there a simple way to do this with some sort of macro on my puter? Plus, hey, while we're here, can we turn three periods IE ... into an ellipsis IE … ? The 2010 French movie "Point Blank" -- who is singing over the credits at the end of the movie? She is great, the band is great, it's a hot song, but I saw no mention of the song/band/singer as the credits rolled, and I cannot find reference to this anywhere online, aside from other people wondering who is singing also. 148 years ago today, 37 yr old Union Gen John Buford took the 1st calvary division into Gettysburg, got the lay of the land fast, grabbed the high ground, setting the stage for Union victory after the next three horrific days of battle. What books and/or websites have you read which have given you a better understanding of this battle and the people who fought it? [more inside]
A few nights ago a young woman, totally wasted, smacked into my pickup, which was parked on the street. Lots of damage. It's an old truck, it might be considered totaled, I'm not sure. My truck needs this, needs that, it's old, 200,000 miles, I'm not the best at keeping it maintained. Do I try to get money from her insurance to purchase a different truck? Because it's old and high miles, how do I keep from them telling me it's only worth this $$ but I can't replace it for what they offer -- I'd intended to drive this truck to at least 250,000 miles, I love the truck. Or if they repair it how do I demand they don't try to straighten out parts she smashed rather than replace with straight? The body of this truck was mint, never even dinged, it was the best thing about the truck. [more inside]
XP. Trying to get backed up files off old desktop computer. Using windows explorer, I cannot 'see' a partition on secondary hard drive, like the partition is hidden. But I *can* see the files when I search for *.mp3 or *.jpg or *.txt over the whole machine; they can be seen, through search facility, read only, in a partition that doesn't even show up in win explorer. I'm not certain if I somehow hid that partition and if I did I've no idea how I did it. I want to get these files off that desktop and to a place I can access them anywhere anytime, but right now I can't access them at all. Any help you can provide greatly appreciated. [more inside]

Holiday lights. I have two long strands, they would (will) be too long to use what I want to use them for -- can I cut off the end of one strand? Or splice the two strands into one, can that be done, hack off the end of the first one, splice in the second one, cut the second one to length, then Hurray! one long(er) strand, it all works great, right? Right? [more inside]
Can you recommend a family law/divorce lawyer in Austin, TX who is familiar with gay legal issues? Difficulty: house, savings accounts, powers of attorney, medical directives, wills.
I bought a new laptop today, an inexpensive Compaq. I've not opened the box yet, don't want to run the thing without a decent anti-virus anti-malware etc and etc, on the machine and operative -- I figure I'll use my existing puter to download the latest AVG onto a USB stick and install it onto the Compaq before getting online. Also intend to run Decrapifer software and also CCleaner to get all the gunk off the machine that I can. Question: What else do I need to do to fire up this Windows 7 machine, if anything? Also -- once cleaned up, I'd like to image the drive to a USB drive I've got, that USB drive came with proprietary software and I'm sure that'd be fine, but do you have any preference as to what drive imaging (freeware) software to use? I'd like to re-read this short story and other work by this author: I think this was collected in Best American Short Stories or O Henry short story collection, probably the past fifteen years. A great story, tight writing, great characters, fast pace: Cool-headed young man, Irish heritage, gutsy adventurer, stone-cold in face of danger, and danger abounds in this story, as he's running drugs on a sailboat in the Mediterranean. Drugs purchased with money he borrowed from his sister on some pretext or other. [more inside]
Got a notice as I was browsing this morning stating Firefox had updated and as soon as I restarted it was going to install updates, did I want to restart? I didn't, but then restarted a while ago, when it restarted after install all my addons and customizations are completely gone. Everything. I probably had thirty addons, had Firefox set up so nice, exactly how I wanted it. Now what? How do I get my addons back? This has not happened in past updates -- what the hell just happened to me? Wrote for two hours day Tuesday, opened it to 'Save As' last night and then wrote for a few hours, saved it to same file name as Tuesdays file, wiped out Tuesdays writing. OpenOffice Writer. I'm 54 years old, fairly new (2+ years) into a yoga practice. I'm unable to open up enough to successfully do many of the poses; my muscles are not only tight but also actually shorter (from what a trusted massage therapist told me) shorter than the same muscles on other people, presumably because I've carried stress by tightening up all these years. I do believe in this practice, and the possibilities of actually opening up these muscles over time -- is this just delusional? [more inside]

Let's say my name is Fred McMurry. Let's say that I want a new domain name for myself, but I don't want fredmcmurry.net or fred-mcmurry.net but rather I want fred.mcmurry.net -- it seems that the rule is no periods in your domain name. Okay, got it, except why does google have maps.google.com and mail.google.com -- maybe someone here can tell me how I can buy mcmurry.net and then turn that into fred.mcmurry.net? [more inside]

A friend of mine is quite possibly a father of a nine year old girl in California. He'd laid up some with a woman who got pregnant and determined to have the child, told him to get the hell away from her, she didn't want him in her or the childs life anyways, so go buzz off, and my friend did buzz off. Nine years pass. He's very interested in that child now, he'd want to establish paternity first off -- Momma was sortof a sleaze, as he was at the time -- he wants to know if he is Daddy and if he is how does he find his daughter? Street word is that Momma had to give her up to CA social system. [more inside]
So I had a regular sized (full) feather bed, I'm real tall, I thought to take the feathers out of the bed and put them into a king sized duvet and -- Viola! A king sized feather comforter! A good plan. So I bought the duvet, dumped the feathers in, and the thing is warm. But now, feathers large and small are poking through, and poking ME, there's feathers everywhere, I look like a chicken coop landed on me. [more inside]
I just installed WINXP SP3 using my Admin setup, then came to my regular user setup, attempted to login, got a message stating to the effect of "Windows cannot load local user settings" and proceeded to log me in with plain vanilla XP, as if I'd never put any programs on it, as if I'd never made changes to any of the settings, as if I'd never personalized my whole puter. This would be a huge PITA, to set up again, I've been months of personalizing this machine, all my bookmarks are lost, EVERYTHING IS GONE. HELP !?!?!? [more inside]
Is cooking (or re-heating) my food with a microwave destroying the food, sucking out nutrients that would not be removed by heating on the stove top in a stainless pan? I've heard this here and there, dated an Earth Mother South Austin Woman who was/likely is certain that I may as well put nuclear waste products AND rat poison in my food, pretty much heard the same about twenty minutes ago from a woman working in the vitamin/supplements department at Whole Foods, yet another Austin Earth Mother type; just the fact that I said the word 'microwave' caused her to get a big frowny face, looked like she had gas or something. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, I like to toss broccoli with just a shade of water into the microwave for a couple of minutes, or re-heat my rice and beans or soup or whatever. Related: Does cooking vegetables in a pressure cooker rob them of needed nutrients? [more inside]
Windows Media Player 11 -- I (foolishly, it seems) allowed MS to update to the newer media player. I hardly ever use these bloated monsters, but sometimes, at night, I enjoyed one of the visualizations, and I've used it for years. In the latest and greatest media player from MS, it is not available. Where can I get the 'old' visualizations, and how/where to I install said visualizations so I can once again use the only thing I care about their media player? Alternately, can I install an older MS media player on this machine once this new one has its hooks into my puter, and how do I install an older media player, and where do I get it? I'd rather use the latest, as I'm sure it's more up to date against whatever hacks someone may come up with; that said, I want my dang visualization back.
I've read so much here lately 1 2 3 about not browsing as an admin, decided to check it out and yepper, I surely was using an admin account.
