Do I really need a concrete foundation for my garden shed?

Getting around Chicago & Renting a Car

Why would remaining silent "harm your defence" in the UK?

Was just watching a UK mystery-crime show when one of the cops recited the right-to-silence statement, which includes the phrase You do not have to say anything. But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned something which you later rely on in court. Anything you do say may be given in evidence. This seems backwards to the law in the States where nothing you say to the police is useful for your defense. I'm curious about the legal circumstances under which answering police questions would benefit the accused. [more inside]

Can I repurpose water used to sterilize baby bottles for cooking pasta?

CanIEatItFilter: I just sterilized a bunch of breast pumps/bottles in boiling water. Can I use that boiling hot water to cook, specifically something like pasta? The bottles were all washed with soap and water, then thoroughly rinsed before sterilizing. [more inside]

What can we do with an older house with carpeted hardwood floors?

My wife and I are about to close on a house. Most of the rooms are carpeted and we're wondering what we should do; we'd like to rip out the carpets but are worried that the hardwood floors underneath (assuming that the floors are hardwood) might be covered with lead-based paint. I'd like to recognize more languages

Okay, so I was waiting at the train station and I realized that two people a short distance away were speaking in a language I didn't recognize. And it got me thinking. I can probably recognize fewer then 10 languages by ear (note this doesn't necessarily mean I can understand what's being said, just that I know what language it's in). I'd like to be able to recognize many, many languages so when I hear people talking I'll know what language they're speaking even though I won't have a clue what they're actually saying. Is it a good idea to buy two separate airline tickets for a single "trip"?

I'm thinking of taking a transatlantic, one-way flight using two separate tickets. Basically, the cheapest flight I've found that goes to my destination (via one or 2 connections) is more expensive than taking a direct flight to New York, and from there taking one of the budget airlines to my final destination.
