Part of Our Tree Fell on Neighbor's Car - Who pays?

On Christmas Eve, a freak wind from the north knocked a large part of one of our cedar trees over. Part of the damage involved our neighbor's car, which was parked in her driveway. I am told that her automobile insurance is the legal payer, and, since the trees were healthy (although big), we have no legal obligation to her. [more inside]

Scam, Quick Ripoff, or Just Kids at the Mall?

So I was sitting in a common area at our local mall while my wife was shopping. I was checking mail on my phone, and a couple of young men, somewhere between 18 and 22, I would say, came up to me. One of them had an old-looking iPhone in his hand. He asked if he could use my phone to "call his mom," since his phone had no SIM card in it. He offered to let me hold this phone as "security" while he made the call. I just waved them off with a shake of my head and they sorta stomped/wandered off. I have been debriefing this with myself for the last hour or so. [more inside]

Fry Me Twice

Daughter has again introduced liquids to the innards of a laptop computer. This time a 1.5 y/o Macbook Pro. She wiped it off, assumed it was fine, but then it slowly and inevitably died. She is showing up at my house in a few days with the still-viable hard drive, which the Apple Store removed for her. I have a 3 terabite external hard drive and a Macbook Pro. Can someone tell, or link me to how to get her files off her hard drive and onto this external drive? [more inside]

London to Brittany in a Day?

Due to some ill-advised scheduling, we (Americans) are travelling from London to rural Brittany, then back to our reserved room in Paris three days later. Rennes is the closest major city to Plumieux, the village where our friends live. All of the stuff I see online says to take the Eurostar from London to Gare du Nord in Paris, then transfer to Montparnasse to take the TVG to Rennes. From there we would catch a bus to get us near Plumieux, close enough for our friends to pick us up. [more inside]

Take this tune, I want to lose it. Take this song, I'll never use it.

I was changing my iTunes email address, which is my iTunes I. D. My old email address is going away, necessitating the change. I got to looking in my purchases, and all of them were there, under the new I. D. but there were a handful of songs (6 or 7?) listed as purchased by me that I DID NOT purchase. A bunch of show tunes (not that there is anything wrong with that). [more inside]

Biopsy Now?

The situation: My work-related insurance coverage for my daughter ends May 1. She has found a lump, which the docs want to watch for 6 months and then decide about a biopsy. She is 22 and our first thought, before this news, was to allow her to be uninsured through the Summer. [more inside]

Do Cats Murder?

One of my cats has had a loud and contentious history with a neighbor cat. I have not seen then fight but they hissed and screamed and generally did not like one another. Well the neighbor cat showed up dead under one of our bushes (it had been like that for awhile but when the weather warmed up a tad, whew. .that is when we found it). I am wondering if it is possible that my dear kitty did this other cat in. I have not heard of such a thing but it creeps me out to think that I might be harboring a murderer among our menagerie of pets. Has anyone had any experience with this?

ATM Windfall

I just went to my corner credit union ATM and made a $15 withdrawal. The machine gave me $80. Reflexively, I went into the branch, and reported it. They were appreciative. Two people virtually raced over to the back of the machine to shut it down.

At the time, it was a no brainer. But I am wondering if, since the receipt I got indicated a $15 withdrawal, and the cameras usually focus and faces, what would the traceability of it have been? I wonder if Diebold might have been stuck with the mistake. . .Maybe my honesty could have been turned into a political act, if Diebold would have lost out on the money. . .

Web-Based Chat

Web-Based Chat

I have a friend who used to chat with me from IRC at work. The employer removed that program, saying that for security and virus reasons, the only browser, or anything internet would be MIE.

Since this makes Chatzilla a moot issue, are there any sites reachable from an ordinary browser that have some sort of reasonable-working chat that resembles IRC?
