I'd like to replace the windows in my 1950's home. The neighborhood falls into a sort of an intermediate category where it is not designated as a historical district, but is eligible to become one due to the age of the homes being >50 years. For this reason, I have to apply for a Certificate of Appropriateness from the local historical preservation committee in order to replace the street-facing windows. What's my best strategy for handling this? Details below the fold. [more inside]
Today, I was on my Windows laptop and a command prompt window opened, which changed from red text to green text really quickly, almost too quickly to catch. I wiped and re-installed Windows, and now, the same command prompt popped up again! Screenshot: here. Is my computer infected? How can this be with a full wipe and re-install?
About two weeks ago one bird began repeatedly flying into the exterior blinds of one of my windows. Now this happens almost every day at the same time (just before sunset). Today there were three birds doing it. Why are they doing this and how can I make them stop? [more inside]

I ended up with the responsibility of managing the computers at our office. For a ten person staff with fairly simple computer needs -- only a couple of us routinely use anything more complex than Microsoft Office -- is Windows 10 the right choice yet? [more inside]
My PC has been infected with malware. I'm afraid to even turn it on because when I do, it tries to install a bunch of mystery files. What should I do? [more inside]
Unlike the Mac and mobile platforms, Windows 7 doesn't have a native Twitter app other than Tweetdeck. But it appears that it's no longer available and only a web-based version of Tweetdeck exists. Is that the case? What else is there?
Just a quick poll here: I have an older Windows XP machine that I never installed any Adobe products on, but now my wife wants to use that computer and *needs* to edit pdf files (nothing fancy). Should I upgrade to Windows 10, just so I can get the latest greatest Adobe pdf editor? Or try some sketchy PDF editor that still supports XP? Or..?
What next for Picasa? We've been using Google's free image manager since its inception and have accumulated nearly 130,000 pictures (330GB), along with associated favourites, edits, crops, etc. But Picasa isn't supported on Windows 8.1, let alone Windows 10, so what's next? [more inside]
All of a sudden since yesterday my computer has been practically unusable. I originally thought that Windows Defender was going crazy because everything had ground to a halt but I could still see it accessing files via the resource monitor. I eventually killed it, but nothing improved. I'm starting to think my hard drive is dying but I've never had a problem like this before. [more inside]
I recently had an SSD installed and upgraded to Windows 64-bit, which sped my mid-2011 27" iMac up dramatically. It's extremely exciting--I'd assumed I'd have to buy a new machine this year. Are there any other helpful tips out there for getting the most out of this nice piece of equipment and prolonging its lifespan? [more inside]
I make Windows videogames, and my latest engine doesn't let you select screen resolutions. I could change it so it does, but I'd rather make a small program that first lets you choose resolution (and set fullscreen and such), then launches the game app. But then wait (I said in my head), hasn't someone already created this launcher tool? Please help me out. Have they? [more inside]
I am hoping to be able to install Windows 8 on my Mac so that I can do a few work demos; I will be using Windows with only MS Office installed, and using it perhaps once a week at most. [more inside]

My brand new Windows 8 installation somehow picked up Premier Opinion, which seems to be an old piece of malware making a comeback. I've started a cleanup but want to make sure I'm completely thorough. [more inside]
We've got some computers that run monitoring software that we'd like to remain visible. We also want to lock these computers so they require a password if someone wants to use the keyboard/mouse. Turning on the lock screen satisfies the second requirement, but not the first. Turning it off satisfies the first, but not the second... Does anyone know of anything that will do what we want?
I'm an idiot. I had Applecare come out and fix a display issue, and then I asked the guy to diagnose my HD. He spoke little English, and my Korean is very, very poor (I'm in Seoul). He said it's old, so just replace it. I said okay, with little thought. [more inside]
My Dell desktop has Win 8 (with Classic Shell). I can download Win 8.1 for free from the Windows Store. Requesting pros and cons for doing this, please.
I recently started using a Windows 8 PC, and something I miss in the move from OS X is the ability to pull up all instances of an app with a single click. Can I get Windows to mimic this behavior? [more inside]
My dad enjoys playing computer games but is getting a little tired of Civilization V after thousands of hours of playing it. I am trying to help him find other games that he might enjoy; more information on what he likes and doesn't like is contained within. Also, due to neck-related pain, it is sometimes more convenient for him to use his iPad than his desktop computer. I know almost nothing about iOS games, so we would be happy to hear suggestions for those as well. [more inside]

It's time to replace the household PC. I'm a programmer, I use PCs all the time, but I have not paid attention to PC hardware specs in maybe a decade, so I'm lost in a sea of mostly equivalent choices. [more inside]
Yesterday, I started noticing that Windows is freezing for maybe a half-second every minute or so. Ordinarily it's not noticeable, but during videos or games it causes sound to catch for the duration ("...and so the solution to the pRRRRRRRoblem is..."), and sometimes video playback to glitch. Anyone have an idea what's going on? [more inside]
We're planning on starting to replace some of our old windows this year and I realized that I know precious little about windows. Is there a brand or type that I should lean toward? Any to avoid? What things do I need to know before I start this process? My friend recommended a few high-end windows, but I'd like to get some more information from those with more knowledge in this area than I. I used to use Truecrypt to encrypt little enclosures so I wouldn't have to worry about my files so much when I, say, put them on a USB stick or backed them up to the cloud. There was a whole... thing with Truecrypt and now it's hard to say if I should use it anymore. Is there another program that's going to work well for this purpose? [more inside]

My four year old home-assembled Windows desktop PC was working fine until a recent move. Now, when I turn it on, it seems to be booting as usual but then powers down about 15-45 seconds after powering on. What's the likely problem? What do I do next? [more inside]
Our organization recently bought a new file server (running Server 2012), but the old server probably has a few years of life remaining in it. I'd like to place the old server at the opposite end of the building and use it to host real-time backups through the LAN. [more inside]
I've extracted a .otf font from my Kobo Touch. I'd like to install it on Windows, but Windows can't handle it and neither can any of the font editing programmes I've downloaded. I believe that the file contains multibyte characters. I have tried right clicking and choosing install. I've tried font forge, and several other font related applications. I just get varying error messages saying that it's not a valid font file, despite it working on the Kobo. If it's relevant, the font is Gothic MB101. I'm running Windows 7 - what do I need to do to install this font?
The building I live in will be power washed next week and the landlord has asked that we (i) close our windows and (ii) move items away from the windows that might be damaged by inadvertent leakage. I'd like to take the extra step of sealing my windows because I am fully confident that they will leak. My thought is some kind of tape but I don't want to harm the paint on the sills or leave marks on the glass. Thoughts?
I've very recently (ie yesterday) got myself a brand new desktop PC! I would really like your advice on the best ways to keep it running at its best, protected from the nasty things that lurk on the internet (virii, malware, spyware etc) and set up to get the most out of our blossoming relationship... The machine runs on Windows 8. [more inside]

I have an acer operating Win7 starter. (1) I hastily tried to watch a champions league game and picked up some bad viruses. (2) I haven't been running a legit version of windows for at least 2 reboots and I don't have any current version I can switch to (3) Attempts to use pirated versions have led to failure thru what seems to be windows versions conflicts or lack of crucial drivers that I can't find. I understand that uninformed pirates, even if they're plundering Msr. Gates are not easy to forgive, but please help. I'd just like to have a functioning old machine with a clean OS install and not have to get a new machine. Any tips, links, instructions are greatly appreciated.
