Exchange student in Germany with Europe visa, passport stuck in UK visa office, wanna travel to France. Can this be done?

My friend, currently in Germany as an exchange student, applied for a UK visa about 15 days ago. The expected time of arrival of the visa was estimated at 10 days. However, the visa and the passport have yet not been returned from the UK. In the meanwhile, my friend needs to travel to France two days from now. Can she do so, carrying a copy of her passport/Europe visa and a letter from the UK visa office stating that the passport is currently in their possession? We understand that French authorities often ask people for their identification papers at random points in time - so will the documents in lieu of the passport hold water?

Hotels Near Norfolk VA Airport?

Mrs. COD and myself are headed to VA Beach this weekend, and my efforts to secure a nice hotel cheap via Hotwire / Priceline have not panned out. We are visiting with friends on Chick's beach, so staying somewhere around the Norfolk Airport keeps us within 15 minutes of their place, which is fine. Has anybody stayed at a Norfolk Airport hotel recently? The reviews on the travel sites are kind of scary, but I'm hoping it's just Internet trolling and it's not really that bad. Cheap is good - we just need a place to crash Saturday night. Any recommendations from recent personal experience?

Meeting point in a small town near the M25 and easy to get to on the train

I am flying into London Stansted later this week. I'll be meeting a friend who works in Central London, and then driving with them to South Yorkshire. We'd like to meet somewhere in far North London/Beds/Herts that is as least somewhat on the way from Stansted to the M1, probably somewhere off the M25, and ideally a relatively small, uncomplicated town (I haven't driven manual or on the left for a couple of years and this is going to be during rush hour!). It should also be easy to get to on the train from Kings Cross or Euston. I don't know the area, so I'm going by Google Maps at the moment. Our current plan is Potters Bar station. Any better ideas?

If You Give a Kid a Soccer Match...

My son, a soccer player and avid Manchester City and Manchester United fan, is turning 17 on the date of the Man City vs Man United match (April 28th, 2012). Organized Activities in Florence, Italy?

My family is traveling to Florence in October. This is not our first Florentine rodeo, so to speak - we've done a lot of sightseeing and exploring on past visits. This time, we thought it might be fun to delve a little deeper and take a class (cooking?), workshop, special organized tour, etc. Four adults, fairly foodie, up for anything that isn't too physically strenuous. Any MeFi "Been There Done That" recommendations?

Is it a bad idea for my terminally ill grandmother to go to the USA for 48hrs?

My dad and I are thinking of taking my 85yr old grandmother on a road trip. She was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer last Thursday and decided on Friday that she doesn't want to go through treatment. She does, however, want to see her sister, sister's kids and grandkids one last time. However, they live 1,300KM away in a mid-sized Mid-West city in the States while we're in Toronto. We'd like to make this visit happen for grandma, recognize all the risks inherent in trying to do so, and would like to hear the stories/experiences of anyone who has done anything similar. Relevant details below the fold. Thank you. [more inside]

What do you know about Kilmarnock VA?

In celebration of our 20th anniversary on Friday, Mrs COD and myself will be leaving the teenagers at home while we spend the weekend at a B&B in Kilmarnock VA. We plan to take the ferry over to Tangier Island on Saturday. Is anybody familiar enough with Kilmarnock to recommend restaurants for dinner, or which of the options on Tangier will deliver the best lunch? I know it's not a big town, that was the point. This is a quiet getaway and eat good seafood kind of weekend. Neither of us are up for the summer crowds of VA Beach or DC. Thanks!

Restaurant recommendation for Traverse City, MI (gluten-free?)

I'm looking for a nice restaurant in Traverse City, MI to take my wife for our anniversary. I am looking to spend under $100 as we are on a pretty tight budget while camping. We don't need super fancy but a non-chain would be nice. I prefer a non-ethnic restaurant, hopefully one that has gluten-free food offerings. (I have celiac's.)
