Moving GPX Waypoints

I'm currently working with a charity in the Caucasus. Yesterday I spent ten hours surveying and hiking in the mountains, recording waypoints using Viewranger on my phone. Today, I see I didn't change a setting (? I think?) and all of my waypoints are about 80km out. Is there an easy, free way to fix this? [more inside]

Getting started on YouTube - how do I make intros like Marzia's?

Hi everyone! Not looking to copy or plagiarize - but I am just getting ready to launch a YouTube channel and I don't know what software I'm going to use to edit videos or much about how to get going. Article about unmaintainable software on bank mainframes

Please help me locate an article I read online a couple of years ago. Essentially it went like this: the core software that banks use to run transactions is very old and hard to maintain, and they're terrified of breaking something by trying to integrate new features. Therefore, "instant" transactions via online banking aren't really instant: what actually happens is that there's an elaborate front-end emulating the functionality of the core system. Every night the front-end system delivers all the queued-up "faked" transactions to the core system, which actually processes them. [more inside]

Free software to split or convert an AIFF file?

I have a long AIFF file I need to split into a couple of smaller ones. I found a couple of online programs to convert the file to an mp3, but either the file is too big or they're a free trial that only converts part of the file and you have to purchase it to be able to convert the whole file. I haven't found one that can just split AIFF files. Is there a 100% free program that will either split the file or convert it to an mp3 format (since I do have a program that can split mp3s)?

Please point me at a Mac picture/sketch editor that does what I want.

I have a very basic (I think) requirement infrequently where I need to slightly modify a picture (usually a line drawing or a jpg of an event layout or similar) so that I can extract the track map from it. I keep bouncing between software that doesn't do enough to overwhelmingly complicated and too involved to do quickly. Please translate what is available in my own perspective please. I am open to the possibility that I am outside the realms of simple software, but am ever hopeful. [more inside]

Help me track my mother's computer usage

My mother is 90-years-old and lives alone. We worry when she doesn't pick up for the phone or we haven't heard from her for a couple of days. She is actively-opposed to any sort of regular check-ins by phone or e-mail to us, and she also does not want to use any type of monitoring service for the elderly (such as Lifeline) She does, however, use e-mail and her computer on a daily basis. Is there any software I can install that would send out e-mail alerts to us when she has (or hasn't) used her computer in x amount of hours? I would, of course, ask her permission to do this, and I am fairly sure she would be okay with it. (Don't ask me what exactly the difference is between this and Lifeline, I think it has to do with the stigma of aging that a service like Lifeline implies, something she is quite sensitive about.)

Does this software/web service exist?

I'm starting a blog, and I have this hunch that perhaps a service or program exists out there that allows you to: 1) Write, format, and save blog posts, as well as mark them as "ready" to publish, and 2) Automate publishing those ready posts chronologically onto your blog at a fixed rate or alternatively by selecting a publishing date and time for every post marked as ready. The theory being, I could write as many posts as I want on a given day, but schedule and automate their publishing. Does this sort of thing exist? [more inside]

Before building my own... does this software exist? I need to search a collection of PDF & Word files for key phrases, and dump the surrounding lines (x-m to x+n characters/lines, where x is the found phrase) into text files. I occasionally need to search a few dozen files for a few dozen data items, which usually have some identifying text nearby. This needs to be automated. Big bonus if it implements OCR, but that's not essential. Freeware, or cheapware, obviously is best. Windows-based is preferable, but I can do Linux.

What Salary.com IT job category am I, really?

Developer looking for high-performance portable dev laptop

I'm a software developer who is finding himself more and more in need of a very powerful, very portable machine. Here are my requirements:
  • Under 5 lbs (key-- I don't want this to be a brick)
  • i7 processor
  • 8 GB RAM (with 2 slots for upgrade to 16 if desired)
  • 512 GB SSD, or smaller SSD with HDD secondary drive
  • NO HP. Their repair rate is terrible, their customer service is worse. They're the one brand I will not buy for PCs.
Now, I've checked out the new MacBook Pro and I can spec it out this way, but it'd cost 3k. I'd insist on 16 GB for the MBP as I would be running parallels and doing windows dev with visual studio, and would dedicate at least 8GB for that environment. What I want to know is, does such a machine exist other than the MBP?

What's the right software for printing and tracking quarterly invoices?

Best software or websites to manage my small company

First of all, if there are better places on the internet where I should ask these types of questions about project and company management, please let me know. You guys are awesome, but I have plenty of other types of questions I'd like to ask in here, and, plus, I need to find the best source for answers to specific questions like this and fast. I need the proper technological solution for managing the flow of tasks and information of an entire company. The company is about 20 people in the office (half of them engineers) and about the same in the fab shop, so it's small. I am not the owner, but the oft-ignored second-in-command. See my other questions (here and here) for more details about my specific working situation. Right now, the company can only be described as chaotic. We have taken probably on probably too much work, people (especially me) aren't aware of what others are doing, collaboration takes place in inefficient bursts in the conference room, and the massive amount of information we generate per job and in the rest of the business is never easily found when needed. The owner causes a lot of these problems with his capricious style of running the business and tends to only add to the entropy, but I think that centralization of information and communication may save it before it's too late. I need the proper tool or tools to do this. I'll discuss where I am thus far, and we can go from there. [more inside]
