Article about unmaintainable software on bank mainframes

Please help me locate an article I read online a couple of years ago. Essentially it went like this: the core software that banks use to run transactions is very old and hard to maintain, and they're terrified of breaking something by trying to integrate new features. Therefore, "instant" transactions via online banking aren't really instant: what actually happens is that there's an elaborate front-end emulating the functionality of the core system. Every night the front-end system delivers all the queued-up "faked" transactions to the core system, which actually processes them. [more inside]

Free software to split or convert an AIFF file?

I have a long AIFF file I need to split into a couple of smaller ones. I found a couple of online programs to convert the file to an mp3, but either the file is too big or they're a free trial that only converts part of the file and you have to purchase it to be able to convert the whole file. I haven't found one that can just split AIFF files. Is there a 100% free program that will either split the file or convert it to an mp3 format (since I do have a program that can split mp3s)?

I keep bouncing between software that doesn't do enough to overwhelmingly complicated and too involved to do quickly. Please translate what is available in my own perspective please. I am open to the possibility that I am outside the realms of simple software, but am ever hopeful. [more inside]

Help me track my mother's computer usage

My mother is 90-years-old and lives alone. We worry when she doesn't pick up for the phone or we haven't heard from her for a couple of days. She is actively-opposed to any sort of regular check-ins by phone or e-mail to us, and she also does not want to use any type of monitoring service for the elderly (such as Lifeline) She does, however, use e-mail and her computer on a daily basis. Is there any software I can install that would send out e-mail alerts to us when she has (or hasn't) used her computer in x amount of hours? I would, of course, ask her permission to do this, and I am fairly sure she would be okay with it. (Don't ask me what exactly the difference is between this and Lifeline, I think it has to do with the stigma of aging that a service like Lifeline implies, something she is quite sensitive about.)

Does this software/web service exist?

I'm starting a blog, and I have this hunch that perhaps a service or program exists out there that allows you to: 1) Write, format, and save blog posts, as well as mark them as "ready" to publish, and 2) Automate publishing those ready posts chronologically onto your blog at a fixed rate or alternatively by selecting a publishing date and time for every post marked as ready. The theory being, I could write as many posts as I want on a given day, but schedule and automate their publishing. Does this sort of thing exist? [more inside]

Please help me find a good Drupal developer to pick up the pieces

Ok hivemind, you've helped me once before, I hope you can do it again. That includes migrating from a Filemaker database and a whole bunch of thoroughly detailed specifications for enrollment, payment systems, membership management, member profiles, various back office reports, event calendaring, conference scheduling, etc. etc. These specs describe the functions we want and I think they are clear. "Nah, boss; I'm just a speedreader"

Before building my own... does this software exist? I need to search a collection of PDF & Word files for key phrases, and dump the surrounding lines (x-m to x+n characters/lines, where x is the found phrase) into text files. I occasionally need to search a few dozen files for a few dozen data items, which usually have some identifying text nearby. This needs to be automated. Big bonus if it implements OCR, but that's not essential. Freeware, or cheapware, obviously is best. Windows-based is preferable, but I can do Linux.

What Salary.com IT job category am I, really?

Prepping for my annual review, I bought one of those Salary.com employer salary survey reports. Median pay listed for a "Software Support Engineer I" is $63k!
