I want to write a family history book but MS Word isn't cutting it...

I have 30 years of family history research, documentation, photos, interviews, notes - I also have a bunch of info between my ears that I never got around to writing down. Funds are tight right now, so paying someone to write a book for me isn't going to happen. I need recommendations (as in, you've done this) for software, open source is best, which will help me organize and publish my family history as an ebook, with the option to pay a publisher some day for hard copies.

What non-Apple slideshow software should I acquire?

Windows 10. I need to acquire (buy if necessary) a good slideshow program. It must be able to output high-res .mov files as the stuff I'm creating is to be integrated into a movie project. Hopefully, it will afford me the ability to program some fairly complex moves, zooms, transitions (ie: not just a few stanard Ken Burns style defaults). Hopefully, I won't be in for a BIG learning curve as I have deadlines looming. [more inside]

what is a good windows utility for accessing an iso file as a disk

Best solution for ad-hoc parsing and reformatting of text?

I handle a lot of screenplays, recording scripts, game dialogue text tables, localization tables, and other text-related files. And I have a need to output to varying formats with varying goals--sometimes to reformat a screenplay to something more standard or to put text in a format that is ready to use by a game or other software. For simplicity's sake, assume that all input and output formats would be plain text. What is a good software tool to help with these format conversions? [more inside]

Article about unmaintainable software on bank mainframes

Please help me locate an article I read online a couple of years ago. Essentially it went like this: the core software that banks use to run transactions is very old and hard to maintain, and they're terrified of breaking something by trying to integrate new features. Therefore, "instant" transactions via online banking aren't really instant: what actually happens is that there's an elaborate front-end emulating the functionality of the core system. Every night the front-end system delivers all the queued-up "faked" transactions to the core system, which actually processes them. [more inside]

Free software to split or convert an AIFF file?

I have a long AIFF file I need to split into a couple of smaller ones. I found a couple of online programs to convert the file to an mp3, but either the file is too big or they're a free trial that only converts part of the file and you have to purchase it to be able to convert the whole file. I haven't found one that can just split AIFF files. Is there a 100% free program that will either split the file or convert it to an mp3 format (since I do have a program that can split mp3s)?

Help me track my mother's computer usage

My mother is 90-years-old and lives alone. We worry when she doesn't pick up for the phone or we haven't heard from her for a couple of days. She is actively-opposed to any sort of regular check-ins by phone or e-mail to us, and she also does not want to use any type of monitoring service for the elderly (such as Lifeline) She does, however, use e-mail and her computer on a daily basis. Is there any software I can install that would send out e-mail alerts to us when she has (or hasn't) used her computer in x amount of hours? I would, of course, ask her permission to do this, and I am fairly sure she would be okay with it. (Don't ask me what exactly the difference is between this and Lifeline, I think it has to do with the stigma of aging that a service like Lifeline implies, something she is quite sensitive about.)

Does this software/web service exist?

I'm starting a blog, and I have this hunch that perhaps a service or program exists out there that allows you to: 1) Write, format, and save blog posts, as well as mark them as "ready" to publish, and 2) Automate publishing those ready posts chronologically onto your blog at a fixed rate or alternatively by selecting a publishing date and time for every post marked as ready. The theory being, I could write as many posts as I want on a given day, but schedule and automate their publishing. Does this sort of thing exist? [more inside]
