My landlord just sent out a notice saying that we're going to be required to pay our rent online, through a service that will charge a fee. Is this allowed? [more inside]
I have an idea for an online project, but I don't know what technical skills would be necessary, so I don't know where to start finding the right person/people. [more inside]
Does anyone know of a good collaborative online resource that I could use to coordinate my brother's bachelor party? Essentially, I need to be able to coordinate schedules and accept suggestions and thoughts on what we can do. I'd think that there's a great collab website for this, but my google-fu is failing mightily. Help Askme-wan-kenobi, you're my only hope.
I'm a big fan of classic Latin trio bands such as Los Panchos, Los Tres Ases, and Los Tres Reyes. I just purchased a guitar and my eventual goal is to be able to play in a style similar to the lead guitarists of these groups. [more inside]

Are you aware of any schools or universities that allow faculty to retain intellectual property rights to their course materials that are used online, and perhaps also receive royalties from the school for its use, above and beyond a normal faculty contract? [more inside]
Drawing names from a hat just doesn't work for our far flung family anymore. Have you used a website or app to distribute secret Santa names. It should have some way to keep spouses from getting each others' names. It would be nice if you could post a wishlist at the same site.
Haven't been able to find it on google due to terminology ignorance, and have relentlessly searched the JayisGames archive with no result. Turn-based browser combat game with a clicky mechanism I do not know the name of, somewhat generic supernatural theme, detective-like protagonist. [more inside]

The AAA makes great guide books for each state that will list close to every city in a state, and tell you what's the most interesting thing to do by every little podunk city. But does this sort of information live online somewhere? And does it live online somewhere for free?
Some moons ago I found an online vinyl record store that seemingly had hundreds of thousands of records for sale for dirt cheap. I cannot seem to find this link in my bookmarks nor can I locate via standard Google searches. Since I lost my hidden gem, I was wondering where everybody else purchases their records. Musical tastes are varied, but mostly lay in the rock genre with jazz and classical right behind. Thanks!
I'm curious to hear how everyone organizes their Facebook friends lists, and how they figure out which posts/content to disclose to which parties. How do you use your lists? What is your system? [more inside]

I am trying to find an ordering and database solution for the tool bank I manage in England. I currently use WooCommerce which is great but not built for a library type service. Ideally, I would like an ordering solution that has no pictures and is incredibly straightforward. Is there a cloud based web borrowing solution where one can see quantity of items in real time and order against and items can be added back just as quickly? Happy to consider just about any solution at this point! The rub is I need a system that can also track repairs and orders in supply chain. I am guessing that is not too difficult but a consultant from the library sector had no idea where to start for less than £10,000 per year.

The Community Radio Station I helped found uses Nicecast to repeat the signal from the station to our streaming provider. The problem is that if there is a power outage when the system starts back up Nicecast thinks Port 8000 is busy and so switches to Port 8001. [more inside]
I'm going to get my real estate broker license and want to take the required class hours online (90 for WA state). There are a number of sites that offer the classes, however none have impressed me in the least. Is there something out there I just haven't found? [more inside]
I'm thinking of contacting someone I previously dated to see if he wants to date again. I know there's a good chance I won't get a positive response or will just get hurt again, but I can't help the feeling that there's some kind of unfinished business here. So I want to contact him. My questions are: (a) is trying to see if he wants to date again absolutely a bad idea? and (b) if not, how do I contact him? Do I text him and just say hello and try to gauge his response before going further? Call him out of the blue to talk? See if he wants to meet up for a drink? [more inside]

I'm getting back into running for fun and fitness after a couple of decades of not running. The last time I was running seriously, the WWW had just been invented and Usenet's rec.running was the place to go. Can you recommend your favorite online community for runners--the kind of place to exchange route ideas, gear reviews, and training tips? I'm an occasional participant at BikeForums.net, which offers all that for cycling, and I'd like to find something similar for runners.

Someone who I bonded with decided we had no spark, but wants to be friends. I am having trouble dealing with being rejected and my lowered self-esteem from the rejection but I feel like he is such a special person that I want to keep him as a friend. We had an intense online relationship for three months and dated for less than 2 weeks. Reading all these posts on MetaFilter has really helped me deal better with my breakup, but I still feel a inner turmoil about how I should handle my own situation. I don't feel that I trust my judgment so...here I am. Help on the matter is appreciated or just some advice or words would help me get through this. [more inside]

First of all, if there are better places on the internet where I should ask these types of questions about project and company management, please let me know. You guys are awesome, but I have plenty of other types of questions I'd like to ask in here, and, plus, I need to find the best source for answers to specific questions like this and fast. I need the proper technological solution for managing the flow of tasks and information of an entire company. The company is about 20 people in the office (half of them engineers) and about the same in the fab shop, so it's small. I am not the owner, but the oft-ignored second-in-command. See my other questions (here and here) for more details about my specific working situation. Right now, the company can only be described as chaotic. We have taken probably on probably too much work, people (especially me) aren't aware of what others are doing, collaboration takes place in inefficient bursts in the conference room, and the massive amount of information we generate per job and in the rest of the business is never easily found when needed. The owner causes a lot of these problems with his capricious style of running the business and tends to only add to the entropy, but I think that centralization of information and communication may save it before it's too late. I need the proper tool or tools to do this. I'll discuss where I am thus far, and we can go from there. [more inside]
O hai! I'm a Google avoider. I've managed to not use Gmail, and to stop using Google as a search engine. I do have a Google account, but I use a separate browser to log into that, and log out and close the browser when I'm done. My online Google-avoiding life would be complete if only I could find a good replacement for Googledocs, preferrably free. [more inside]
Are there any websites or programs that can read and export MS Project .mpp files that are more affordable and just as capable as MS Project? Failing that, what's a good online website that can achieve the same effect of building the chart for the customer and maybe even allowing them to collaborate with us on it? We're a small company whose customers often like to see and modify MS Project files at the beginning of a project. Project is expensive and locked to one computer per license, and I don't feel like installing it on lots of computers here when most of the users will use it maybe 1% of the time. Plus, none of us know how to fully extract all the value from this expensive software to justify it. I'd like a solution more tailored to our small needs that still will satisfy our customers. I'm also open to other project management solutions as detailed below. [more inside]

The bf and I have started talking engagement (eeee!) and at some point I ended up with my heart set on a peach sapphire. I didn't think I was being that fussy but at this point I'm starting to wonder. [more inside]
In order for any web site to charge one for services or goods, in this case services, what are they legally required to record and produce? I'm having a little trouble wording my exact question so maybe this will help. The web site in question provides phone service for inmates in correctional facilities and in order for one to receive calls from a loved one in the correctional facility you have to set up an account and attach a phone number to it while loading money for the overpriced service... $5 for 15mins. The company charged me a fee of $5 every time I was to load money on the account which did not show the rate for a call per min and also charged me numerous unknown fees. I could not tell why or how much I was charged which was made worse by their not being a way to track credits and charges to the account. When I contacted customer support they also could not account for the charges and would not refund them, refused to refund my visa purchase, and claims to have no way of producing charges and credits to my account. Their customer service is no help and I'm not sure how to handle the situation. [more inside]

I saw that Facebook has created an updated version of the News Feed (see it at Facebook.com/newsfeed) that has larger pictures and less text. I really liked it, so I signed up for the waiting list. A month has passed and still no sign of the new design. Anyone know when the public release will be?
Which sectors or industries are surprisingly underrepresented online? We all know books, games, music, etc are all extremely well represented online but are there any industries that aren't. They may be business to business or business to consumer. What gaps if any or left. Or is it only niche areas?
I bought a shirt through a well-known website for my brother for Christmas. He didn't like it, and on January 13th he mailed it back, unworn, to the shirt company's warehouse. On January 15th I opened up a help desk ticket asking when I should expect a refund, and was told I'd receive an e-mail when they had gone through their returns. It has now been more than four months, and I've bumped the ticket a few times. [more inside]
I'm on OkCupd, and I've been chatting with someone who seems pretty cool and cute. We made plans to meet on Sunday, but she said she was busy but wanted to meet up later. I had a free ticket to a movie yesterday, so I asked if she wanted to come out. Again, busy, so I said "Hey, I'm free on Thursday and Sunday if you want to meet, but if not it's cool". I got a message back saying "I did want to, just got busy. Not into the attitude though so lets leave it there." The logical thing is just to leave it at that and not pursue her any more, but part of me wants to try and figure out if I can fix my mistake and at least meet up for a coffee to see if there's any chemistry there. Is it possible?

So I met this guy online, we recently spoke over the phone for the first time and have spoken one other time after that. First conversation was about 20 minutes and the next was maybe 10 and took place this morning. We met on the type of dating site where people are matched for long-term relationships - what I'm trying to say here is we know we're not trying to just find friends. I am trying not to waste my time here and want to get to know what he is thinking so that if we're not on the same page I can move on, preferably before my membership online ends. [more inside]

Are there any online retailers of snack foods (cookies, candy, pretzels) that will deliver to Norway? I don't understand customs regulations very well, but I think these may have to be stores actually in Norway. I would be paying with a US credit card and am willing to muddle about the site with Google translate and squinting at the pictures.

Don't worry, I'm not about to ask anyone 'But whyyyyy don't you like meeeee??'. I totally get that someone can be not-into-me for the colour of my t-shirt if they want: no harm, no foul. I have inherited a watch that was purchased a few years ago for about $2000. It has rarely been worn and I think it has all of the box/paperwork with it (from what I can see from similar watches online), including the purchase receipt. My question is where/how can I sell it? Either by listing it online, but there seems to be so many websites, or in person via a second hand dealer or similar? I've seen lots of watch websites, but are some better than others? Especially considering I don't have a profile or history on such sites. Thanks
