In Planet of the Apes Dr. Zeius is a religious zealot, and his goal is to not have is vision of the world upended. He denies he truth of Taylor and at the end destroys Cornelius' dig site. As he is leading Cornelius and Zira away at the end he says that what he is doing he is doing for the good of all the apes. I used to take this as an act of hypocrisy, but on re-watching it this line is juxtaposed with Taylor's discovery of the Statue of Liberty. It feels to almost be implying that Zeius is right, that progress is not an inherent good. What is the intent of these last few scenes meant to be? [more inside]

There was some movie which contained a deleted scene in which two of the characters play Diablo II. The setup as I remember it started with a frantic "You have to come over right away it's an emergency" type phone call. The call-ee arrives to see the call-er playing Diablo II (might have been the first Diablo but in context I doubt it) on a gigantic screen and the 'emergency' is something around recovering the loot from an accidental death in an inconvenient in-game location.
What movie was this?

My elementary school class was shown a movie about a dystopian future where the sun only appeared once in a while. I saw the movie sometime between 1984 and 1986.
It was in the gifted program if that makes any difference. I’m sure the movie was meant to be thought-provoking. I was slightly traumatized.
This is what I remember:
1) The sun only comes out once at a ridiculously long interval, maybe once a year or once every 10 years.
2) Around five or six school age kids standing in front of a huge wall of tanning bed lights. There were in their bathing suits and wearing eye protecting goggles. They talked amongst one another and were told by the teachers to switch sides every so often.
3) When the sun came out, colorful flowers bloomed, children ran in the fields, but there was one bullied child locked in an interior room or closet. She or he was not able to enjoy the one day of sunshine.
Has anyone seen this or know its name? Internet searches have been fruitless.

I'm vaguely remembering a movie, maybe a made-for-tv movie. The plot involved a kid, I think a boy, coming to live with relatives (?) Maybe he was a foster kid, or maybe the adults he was to live with were his grandparents. The kid wants a dog. Wilford Brimley, I believe, was the irascible grandfather with a heart of gold. I can only remember one scene, where a woman is looking for a kid gone missing (maybe her own or maybe she was babysitting) and ends up finding him with a couple of pedophiles (a man and a woman) who have the missing kid and one or two others. The kid is hidden somewhere in their place and at first she is almost ready to leave, but then something strikes her as odd, and she starts noticing little details, like the nursery floor covered with plastic (to make cleanup easier). She comes back and finds the hidden kid and I think she ends up shooting the pedo couple.
The movie is from the last decade or so. I can't remember any of the actors. I think the missing kid story was just one of several intertwining stories in the movie.

I saw a movie a few years ago that was really excellent. Unfortunately, I do not remember the title, or really much of a plot. After scouring google and coming up with nothing, I've come to the great hive mind for an answer. What I remember: the central character is a young boy, who I believe grows up in a family where at one point or another in the film, each member of the family ends up in a mental institution. I think there is a mother, father, and possibly sister. I think the boy becomes a writer at the end. I believe the final shot is of an old man (the boy, grown up?) smiling, then walking up a warmly lit staircase. I know this is a long shot but, any ideas, metafilter? This has been bothering me for years. [more inside]

They said it's not animated, and not a muppet/puppet movie (i.e. not the dark crystal).

I'm looking for lines of dialogue from movies, novels, or elsewhere, in which someone says that something is not an X, even though it is
an X, just not a mere X or typical X. An example of the type of exchange I'm looking for: "Wow, you spent a year's salary on a car?" "A car? This is isn't a car
. It's a Lamborghini!" The second person knows that their Lamborghini is a car, but means to express that it isn't just
a car. (It's important for my purposes that the person doesn't say 'just'.) There must be some recognizable instances of this type of speech, but I'm drawing a blank. Any ideas?

I saw a documentary about a man who was representing himself in a lawsuit or series of lawsuits -- I think the government had filed them against him for sending threatening letters. Something about defending his land and eminent domain... He had a wife that he met in a foreign country. She was a lot younger than him and she moved to the US and married him. They were both chain smokers and used a plastic fork as a cigarette holder. They lived in a trailer that was a mess and full of document boxes of his "research" for his case. And they had a few big dogs.

There's a character in the 1955 movie "French Cancan" who wears a very fancy uniform. He wears a light blue double-breasted jacket with white braid and bright red pants with stripes on the sides. I think it is some kind of old fashioned military dress uniform. You can see the outfit 0.26 seconds into the trailer
(warning:there are 26 seconds of cancan dancing first). My question is:
(1) What sort of uniform was this? Or is it just a costume they made up for the movie?
(2) Where/how could a modern person most affordably get a similar outfit of sufficiently good quality to wear around town at fancy occasions that are not Halloween?
