Help me think of a not-too-expensive gift (under $50) to take to a friend's baby shower. They have a registry but I'd rather get them something fun that they weren't expecting. [more inside]
We need to get gifts for the wonderful team of people who are helping us get married. Please advise. [more inside]
A friend of mine, a woman in her late fifties, just moved from NJ to Burlington VT, post-divorce. What might she like or need in her new home? Should I just get 50 lbs of road salt, or can anyone come up with something better?
I'm seeking gift ideas for a 30-year-old male I'll be meeting for the first time at his birthday celebration. [more inside]
I came down with a cold and missed my friend's baby shower. I'd like to get them a nice gift, maybe around $50-100, but their registry only has burp cloths left. I know that they already have a car seat and baby monitor and that they will be using cloth diapers. Parents: what items/services in that price range have you found to be really useful?
I am looking for a pretty/creative way to print/publish/bind a document to give to my friends as a gift. [more inside]
A family acquaintance (he and my parents belong to the same hobby group but are not particularly close) is a lawyer who is negotiating down debt for me after an extremely expensive medical issue was not covered by insurance. He has been exceedingly generous with his time, and refuses any payment. But just saying 'hey thanks' and going on my way feels awful. [more inside]
My new acquaintance has invited me for lunch with his wife and 11-year-old son next Saturday. What should I bring? [more inside]
My girlfriend is graduating university and she's heading to London for a well-deserved holiday later this month. I'm looking for a great gift idea of a fabulous experience that she can have while there! [more inside]
I'm invited to the courthouse part of an interfaith wedding of a relative of my girlfriend. I've scoured metafilter and the rest of the internet for the etiquette concerning gifts, but couldn't find anything applying to the situation. What would be appropriate? [more inside]
Much to my pleasant surprise, today in the mail I received an invite from one of my oldest friends to his son's Bar Mitzvah celebration. They live thousands of miles away, I'm sure they don't expect me to make an appearance, but it seems . . . . . inadequate . . . . . to just check the "no" box on the RSVP card. More context below, but the TL;DR is -- what, if anything, would be an appropriate Bar Mitzvah gift for a young man that I barely know? Or should I just send a card to sort of the whole family? [more inside]
What would you do? My friend Ted and I have a disagreement about a pool cue that has fractured our relationship. Ted says I broke an agreement to trade with him for a cue case. He said I screwed him because when he showed up on Monday with the case I told him another friend, Dan had bought the cue over the weekend. I'll return to this in a moment but there is an element to this dispute regarding Gene giving me the disputed cue back in 2012 three years ago. [more inside]
A relative wants to give a cash gift to my 12-year-old child, but wants to put it in some kind of account where it can grow for many years before the child receives it. Where? How? It's under $1000 and we're in the U.S. [more inside]
A friend recently downsized from a large house to a small apartment near the beach. That makes two adults and a dog living in a (700 sf? I can't be sure) home. What is a gift that I could give that wouldn't just be clutter, or better yet could improve their household? Obviously it should be small, and it has to be something the TSA won't confiscate because I will be flying across the U.S. to visit.
We're moving away. We want to get a present for our amazing part-time babysitter, as well as a gift for the parents of the children who share her, and who host this arrangement (we drop our daughter off at their house two days a week, where the babysitter watches our daughter and their two kids). What should we get? [more inside]
About a month ago I bought a dress on eBay UK. I wasn't happy with the actual item, so I left neutral feedback - now the Seller has contacted me offering me a gift if I witdraw the feedback. Isn't this bribery? How do I proceed? [more inside]
My neighbors are having a baby soon, and I'd like ideas for something useful to give them that won't end up just taking up space in a small apartment. I'll probably be ordering from Amazon UK or eBay UK. We're casual friendly but not close, so offering cooking or housecleaning help wouldn't be appropriate. (I feel pretty sure the new mom will have her mother with her at first.) [more inside]
Please help me find the perfect Valentine's Day gift for my beloved wife. Difficulty level: elephant. [more inside]
We're planning a dinner to celebrate a milestone birthday. We'd like to do something to acknowledge the extra work for the staff we represent. We were thinking a gift for the staff, but we don't know the etiquette of this. [more inside]
I got my boyfriend a guitar for his birthday. It's what he really wants, and he does not know for sure that that's his present. But he suspects it, based on prior conversations, hints dropped on his part, and likely possibilities. Is there any way for me to still have it be a surprise when the day comes? Is there some 'master of misdirection' moves I can use to hide the fact that it's a guitar? [more inside]
I want to give some dear friends the MOST AMAZING omg-you're-pregnant present. But I don't look at baby stuff and so I have no idea where to even start. Requirements: super cute, expressive of how happy I am for them. [more inside]
I was incredibly touched to learn that my goddaughter has decided that in lieu of a birthday party she's inviting all of her guests to a local book repository to sort, sticker, and bag books destined for low-income families. I love this and want to do something for her birthday to help encourage more of this kind of thing in the future. Help me choose from some options or suggest something else: [more inside]
My partner has a birthday coming up and I'm looking for a gift. She is in the habit of listening to the radio on her phone while she does chores around the house or works from home, so I want to get her something a bit nicer to listen on. Specifics inside. [more inside]
I took us indoor skydiving for his 39th birthday and now I am completely stumped as to what I give him for his 40th, and was hoping for suggestions to make the Big Day (31 Jan) special. [more inside]
An Italian penpal and friend from Turin sent me a wonderful gift and I would like to reciprocate. I love chocolates and Italian food generally, so she sent me an assortment of very high end chocolates from Guido Gobino (super fancy, well known Turin brand). I'd like to get her something in return that is unique, special, and can't be found in Italy. [more inside]
My direct manager is having an open house / work-related party tonight (the 30th) and he has invited me and most of the department. We are planning on bringing a small 'host' gift, i.e. flowers or chocolates. Since it is so close to Christmas my wife thinks that we should also bring a small gift for each of my manager's two children (~6 and ~2 years old). I'm unsure whether this would be seen as 'sucking up' or if this is a good idea. [more inside]
THE SITUATION: One of my good friends loves foxes. "Obsessed" is a strong word, but... she is deeply enamored. Fox socks, fox backpack, fox everything. [more inside]
Where can I find a classic, professor-style tweed blazer... cut for a woman? (Serious bonus points: before Christmas??) [more inside]
Asking for a friend. What one book would you recommend for a college aged son who has specifically requested a book "to learn about something"? He's a really great kid who has really matured a lot in the past year - business major, likes sports. Open to all suggestions!
What great DIY food gifts are out there that can be made on short notice, don't contain pricey specialty ingredients, and can be packaged in cellophane or something similar, to be transported and given out as individual treats? [more inside]
My wife loves taking tight photos of flowers, bees and other stuff of that scale. She's not really trying to do true macro photography and I'm not entirely confident that she'd have the patience to deal with a complicated DSLR. I know that all the new point and shoots out there are capable enough to do closeup work and this question has been covered in previous years but I'm wondering if there are any standouts in the late 2014 camera lineup. [more inside]
I recently learned that my (retired) mom is interested in writing, and I would like to get her a book in support of this. Bird by Bird would have been perfect, but she's already read that one. Can you suggest other books have that same feel? [more inside]
I have two gift cards with small amounts on them (just under $5 total) and to be honest I'd much rather give it to a charity than mess with trying to spend it at the store. It seems like a trivial amount but I figure it'd be better than nothing. The problem I'm having is finding a cause that will accept less than ten dollars by card. Any ideas?
Inspired by this thread, I'd like to go all out wrapping Christmas gifts for my wife this year. What ideas, concepts, methods, etc. have you used in the past, or seen online that are sure to impress? [more inside]
For more than two months I've been taking one photo of the view overlooking the river and trees outside the kitchen window. Is there a visually creative way yet somewhat quick way I can print this into a wall sized poster? [more inside]

I'll be spending my second Christmas with my boyfriend's lovely family, and want to get them a gift they'll enjoy. Unfortunately, I don't know them that well, and feel pretty stuck. Deets inside. [more inside]
Another secret Santa question...but I'm a remote employee, and so is my recipient (who I've never met, and who is relatively new to the company). Literally all I know about Recipient is what field his/her PhD is in (something science-y). $25-ish limit (maybe a bit more). Ideas please?
Show me your best, weirdest, coolest, funniest, or most beautiful ornaments that can be got for $20 or less. [more inside]
Recently, I searched for hours online for a brag book for my grandmother as a gift. I found one that fit the bill, but stupidly did not save the page. It was leather, textured/snakeskin-like cover, a 4x6, with about 10-20 leaves, high quality - about $60 or so, and also able to be monogrammed. I cannot, for the life of me, find another that meets these specifications. It's hard to find books this small that are high quality. Can anyone help? I don't need that exact one (though that would be awesome), just a few companies that make things like this.
What sort of "hosting" gift should I bring to an Indian (Gujarati) couple who have invited my husband and me for lunch in their new home? [more inside]
I want to buy a nice copy of The Wind in the Willows as a gift. I went to AbeBooks, and there's about a million editions, and most of them don't have extensive pictures of the guts. [more inside]

My very best bestie in the whole wide world just had a baby girl. Hooray! The first week of her little life was Very, Very Scary, but the stubborn little nugget fought her way through and is now home and safe and ready to get on with Life and Growing and Becoming a Someone. I've already made a donation in her name to the amazing children's hospital that saved her life, but I'd like to send a physical gift for the little monkey, too. What should I get? [more inside]
Can you recommend a beautiful coffee-table book? [more inside]

What is the best way to give a gift card to help pay for plane tickets for domestic US travel? It can't tie the recipient down to a particular airline and it must be a gift card, so please don't tell me to give cash. That would obviously be best.
