Spotty WiFi at my new desk

I recently set up a docking station for my laptop on a desk in my room. The only problem is that this seems to have really spotty WiFi coverage. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it lags to hell when trying to load even something mostly text-based like Metafilter. Streaming is often impossible. I'm considering buying a range extender for my network - what should I keep in mind? [more inside]

Was my computer hacked?

While browsing Wikipedia I got a pop-up message on my screen: "Your IP [address redacted] has been blocked. Error message zk3.com". Then this: http://imgur.com/nHhXNub. Then using Logmein I was communicating to a person who showed me on my event viewer that I had 53,,906 admin errors, and to fix these I needed to pay Secureweb LLV $240.00. I said they were holding me to ransom and closed the session. [more inside]

Do I Stay or Do I Go? New Hard Drive for Dell Opti. 745 or New Computer?

The hard drive on my Dell Optiplex 745, 11/2006 vintage, failed. Is there any reason why replacing the drive and keeping this thing running for a few more years might be a penny wise pound foolish decision? If replacing the drive seems reasonable, what should I keep in mind as I source a new one? Details follow. [more inside]

Do you have a base (or low) model recent Mac Mini? How does it work for general internet use, including streaming and itunes? I like to use Firefox and open a lot of tabs, and use a few script heavy sites like Amazon. Interested in your experience with THIS PARTICULAR SETUP (or maybe the higher model Minis). Does it work fine? Or does it choke? Thx!

Need new computer for Lightroom CC (Lightroom 6). Please advise.

Hello all. I'm looking to build or buy a new rig for photo editing in Lightroom CC (6). I'm dealing with some rather large .dng files around 60-90 MB in size and it's just killing my current rig. My current computer is a 5 year old HP Pavilion Elite HPE-170f with an Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz, 15 GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 with 1.8 GB Memory and a 500 GB Samsung EVO 850 SSD for my OS (Windows 7) and my Camera Raw Cache (currently set at 25 GB). My images are currently stored on a separate internal HDD. It's a pretty slow WD Green drive. [more inside]

How does an NTFS partition affect computer performance?

I have a late-2008 MacBook running Yosemite with 2GB of RAM. For years I have had two external hard drives, one for my Surface Pro 2, and one for this Mac, or so I thought. But after plugging my Mac hard drive into my PC to look at the file list, I found that I could no longer mount the hard drive on my Mac (?!). All the files are still there, accessible and editable on my PC. This seems like witchcraft, but I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation. [more inside]

All of a sudden since yesterday my computer has been practically unusable. What are the best online stores that build custom gaming computers?

I'm looking for any online stores with good ratings that will build custom computers. As in you pick out all the specific parts you want (case, motherboard, cooling, storage, etc..) and they build it for you. I thought about doing it myself but i just don't know enough about it all to do that yet. I know that NCIX does what i'm wanting but i've heard a mixture of bad and good reviews so i'm not sure if i should go with them or not.

Disconnecting my laptop from browser history at work

Hi everybody. I'm not very computer literate, so please bear with me as I'm counting on your indulgence. For whatever reason, using Google Chrome as my default browser on my personal laptop (MacBook Pro, by the off-chance it matters) has resulted in a situation wherein my personal searches wind up on my "History" when I use Google Chrome at work (different computer). I most certainly never chose that. While I have nothing to hide per se, I don't appreciate this breach of privacy, and haven't been able to figure out how to undo that. If I have to simply stop using Google Chrome I'll do so, but is there another way? Thanks in advance.

What programming language/technology should I master to make a living?

I have a solid foundation in computer programming (and theory) but have been mostly out of this field for several years, and not developing my skills. Assume I'm putting in the time and focus to really master something new. What language or technology (or area of application?) in programming could I master that would give me the best shot at becoming a valuable freelance contractor and making a living? Something rare and valuable (or which there's high demand for regardless) which works with being freelance. Your guidance would be appreciated Internets.

MigrationFilter: PC and Mac can't see each other over Ethernet cable

I finally broke down and got a Macbook Air today. In trying to use Mac Migration Assistant to move files from my PC to the Mac, I went with best practices and connected them with an Ethernet cable. I shocked my partner with my computer. Why?

I was sitting in bed with my laptop about an hour ago. Comprehensive machine learning text[book]?

As a post-Masters student in a technical discipline -- computer-science-related -- I find myself wishing to fill in knowledge gaps from courses that I took in school. I'm looking for one, long, comprehensive text on Machine Learning (or several shorter texts) from which to self-teach the whole ML process from beginning to end. Topics of interest would be - supervised, unsupervised and semi-supervised learning - clustering, classification etc. Having already delved into Manning's 'Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing' in school I feel I've a decent knowledge of SVMs, perceptrons, clustering, (H)MMs, etc. but I'd like to learn more about general algorithm design, ML and how it has evolved over the years. Thanks! :)
