I'm looking for a method, or algorithm, to identify completely random musical selections, across all genres (from Norwegian black metal to Renaissance madrigals to Pygmy chants). How can I do it, given that there is no single catalog that lists all music? [more inside]

As a post-Masters student in a technical discipline -- computer-science-related -- I find myself wishing to fill in knowledge gaps from courses that I took in school. I'm looking for one, long, comprehensive text on Machine Learning (or several shorter texts) from which to self-teach the whole ML process from beginning to end.
Topics of interest would be
- supervised, unsupervised and semi-supervised learning
- clustering, classification
Having already delved into Manning's 'Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing
' in school I feel I've a decent knowledge of SVMs, perceptrons, clustering, (H)MMs, etc. but I'd like to learn more about general algorithm design, ML and how it has evolved over the years. Thanks! :)

I would like my friends & family who are not G+ members (and do not want to be) to be able to view my Picasaweb albums as in the past.
I have searched several forums like google's downgrade
, but find no definitive answers.
If I delete my Google+ profile can I email the link to my friends/family? I do not want to lose my Gmail account.

Daughter has again
introduced liquids to the innards of a laptop computer. This time a 1.5 y/o Macbook Pro. She wiped it off, assumed it was fine, but then it slowly and inevitably died.
She is showing up at my house in a few days with the still-viable hard drive, which the Apple Store removed for her. I have a 3 terabite external hard drive and a Macbook Pro.
Can someone tell, or link me to how to get her files off her hard drive and onto this external drive? [more inside]

I'm in the market for an ultrabook with the following specs:
- 13" or larger
- 256 GB SSD (or user-upgradable)
- 8GB RAM (or user-upgradable)
- available with Win7
- touchscreen, tablet mode, and other niceties strictly optional
I'd like to spend less than $2000 all told. What are my options?

Which of these laptops should I get? It is a personal preference or is one better than the other? This will be mostly used for business. But I will be taking it home with me in the evenings and it will be my main primary laptop for everyday use. Both laptops have 8 GB ram, 256 SSD hard drives. 15" screens. The Lenovo has a optical drive and more ports. The Macbook Pro doesn't have an optical drive and only two USB ports.

There is a shareware sci-fi/mecha RPG game that a previous room-mate introduced me to. I don't remember the name of the game, but it was shareware, PC/Windows, and very extensive. I have no idea how to get ahold of the person whom introduced me to the game, hence I'm at a loss of how to find it again. [more inside]

StatFilter: Would anybody be able to recommend a good introduction to the statistical computing language "R" that a reasonably quantitatively-adept psychologist might be able to work through on his own? Something like a step-by-step book or textbook with exercises would be great to help me become more fluent in R. (My colleagues at work who use R are primarily computer scientists who either first learned MatLab or are brilliant autodidacts when it comes to learning different scripting languages, and thus don't have any suggestions; Googling has mostly proferred a somewhat obscurely structured guide from the R authors and lots of invocations to just learn on my own, somehow...). I've become familiar with how to do many individually useful tasks in data structuring and analysis, but I feel a bit like a very high-functioning tourist who has learned a lot of phrases to get around but who would be lost and mugged in an alleyway if I strayed off the beaten path.

Random thought/Someone must have made this question: Anyone know of an online site that allows you to map out areas on a (3D or 2D) human model as "hot" or "cold"?
I'm thinking of something that would allow people to map out their erogenous zones as they know them or discover them. [more inside]

After the OSX 10.8.2 update several days ago, my laptop freezes on wake from hibernate (at least, it only does it when it has been asleep for a while). I posted on the Apple support forums here
, but no one has responded. There are excerpts from my system log there.
Things I've tried: fixing permissions, SMC reset, turning off my gmail calendar updates (I saw a lot of errors in the log having to do with that) but no luck. Any ideas?

Some web content, like Tumblr and the videos on Netflix appear in greyscale, with vertical lines all over them, and smushed into the left side of the screen. If I want to click on something, I need to click on the place it would normally be, rather than where it appears on the tiny, greyscale screen. I don't think it's my browser, because it happens on both Safari and IE (I know, I know, but I can't watch Netflix on Safari). I couldn't find an answer on Google. Thanks in advance!

I had been using a mac to keep my media files and had been using "Ripit" to rip my DVD's and "identify" to tag the resulting files and put into itunes to watch on Apple TV.
Due to file space I have moved to a PC running Windows 7 to do this. And while I have found software to rip the DVD's I cannot find software to add the tags such as "synopsis", "cover art", and "episode details"?
You suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Me-Fi

I've order a bunch of computer parts from Newegg and am going to build my own computer, hopefully not wrecking anything in the process. (I even picked up an antistatic cuff and mat today, to be safe) Thing is, I'm thinking of adding an 100-120gb SSD to the parts list to go along with the 1TB spinning hard drive.
How do I set up having two hard drives like this, with the OS and other often-used essential programs on the SSD and everything else on the "slow" drive? I'm new at all of this--I don't think I've ever even looked at a BIOS before, let alone assembled a system. [more inside]
