I'm a researcher with no film experience, and am beginning to think about an oral history project, which best case would become a short film. The theme is regional accents, so audio quality is important. [more inside]
I'm looking for a camcorder or camcorder/microphone setup to record my band's practices and shows for uploading to YouTube. [more inside]
My husband's birthday is coming up! For work, he drives and talks on the phone A LOT. How can I make make it safer - and nicer - for him to make and take calls while driving? I would also love to hear recommendations for other car-life luxuries that make a difference. [more inside]
I want to start listening to audiobooks on long hikes and drives. Specifically I'd like to start with an unabridged "Lord of the Rings," but eventually others. How do I obtain them as plain mp3s? [more inside]
Two of the broadcast channels in my area (think lower mid-market) have some serious audio issues described after the jump. Is it amateurish compression? [more inside]
There's an interview archived on mpr (NPR MN) that I'd love to download and be able to listen to "offline". I tried determining the url, but they seem to be using some tricky relay or switching servers or something. A search did turn up an "NPR Stream Recorder" by company called Abyssmedia, but couldn't find any reviews as to whether it works currently and is free from pesky adware or worse.
So i have a bit of a weird one here. I'm aware that there are speakers that can pair to eachother so you can use two as a stereo sound pair, or just two at once(E.G. jambox mini, beats pill XL). What i'm looking for though, is sort of the reverse. [more inside]
As part of my doctoral research, I will be conducting interviews with Skype for transcription and analysis. I've heard good things about Audio Hijack Pro as a tool to record audio from Skype -- both from online reviews and from faculty mentors. I've installed the latest version of Skype on my MacBook Air and am currently using the trial version of Audio Hijack Pro (I expect to pay for the full version if I can get the demo working). It works, BUT, I am consistently hearing a horrible echo and feedback when I am hijacking the audio on my Skype test calls. Help! (help...help...help...) [more inside]
Is there a relatively painless* way to pull audio off of a site like this, without using the analog loophole? [more inside]
(1) What's a cheap just plain record player that can output via rca cables? (2) Anyone know any good software or apps for doing that on a PC or mac? Just figuring something might already exist to detect different tracks. [more inside]
I need basically this. I'd rather order it from closer to home. My searches for this type of cable in the US haven't turned up anything, and I don't know enough about electronics to figure out what other names it might go by. I think it's a common type of cable so there must be something I'm missing. Thanks!
Need help figuring out a way to eliminate audio redlining in Premiere Pro CC without also compromising audio lows. [more inside]
I'm not sure what wall/ceiling speaker mounts are appropriate for my system or how to install them in the type of walls I have. Suggestions welcome! [more inside]
I'm hearing some odd noise in my office audio system and I'd like an opinion on what it could be. It appeared right after I replaced three old Shure SCM810 mixers with new versions of the same model. They are usually soft, as heard in this short clip here) but the occasionally sound much louder and become quite noticeable. It reminds me of the interference from Blackberry devices but it's clearly different. Could this be interference from some other device or is something else going on here? Thanks in advance.
I'd love to have an audio version of the Christian Bible that allows you to pick a specific chapter or specific verses and listen to them -- ideally in a recorded voice, not not a text-to-speech generator. I have a Kindle version of the Bible that I really like -- it's easy to navigate to a specific chapter and verse through the Kindle table of contents and menus. It's an NRSV translation from Harper Bibles. Are there any audio versions of the Bible that have similar functionality?
I have three Shure SCM810 mixers, #1 linked to #2 linked to #3, and each is about 15 years old. A few weeks ago the mics on #2 began not working until around noon when they would work just fine for the rest of the day. This seemingly random occurrence has now become predictable in that the mixer won't work in the morning but works just fine later in the day. The feed from #1, which passes thru #2, was seemingly unaffected and continued to work regardless. In addition, the mics from #3 will sometimes exhibit problems gating on in the morning, requiring a much louder speaker volume than normal, but this also seems to resolve by later in the day. Any ideas? Is this a hardware failure inside the unit? Is this something else? And why the hell does it only work later in the day?!?
Hoping to find some guided meditations that are realistic. [more inside]
I am getting a high pitch sound coming out of stereo in a pulse that would make a dog loopy. I do not have a sophisticated setup. The stereo is plugged into the wall. Apple TV is plugged into wall and TV. Router plugged into power strip along with DVD player. I switched out all RCA plugs and speaker wire. [more inside]
I just bought a Lenovo T440s laptop, and the audio is skipping when streaming it to my bluetooth speakers, no matter what distance I sit away. I had previously been using my iPhone 5s for this, and it was wonderful. Is this par for laptops, is it fixable, or am I doing something wrong? [more inside]
Any ideas for a good, cheap audio/video setup for vlogging/podcasts? [more inside]
I have an aging stereo with decent speakers that I'd like to somehow convert so that I can stream music from my phone or computer. Is this possible? Details and pictures inside. [more inside]
We have a new Sonos Play 5 (just one for now) and are comparing the audio quality to a 40 year old small advent bookshelf speaker run from an equally old Luxman receiver. [more inside]
Help me understand the difference between 28dB, 38dB and 48dB. I'm thinking about buying a fridge, and the fridges I'm considering have noise levels ranging from 28dB to 47dB (according to the latest fridge assessment in Choice). Fridges with a 28dB noise level rating are too expensive for me, though, so I'm trying to find something I can afford but which won't annoy me too much (I'm sensitive to the noise of a buzzing fridge). What I can afford tends to be somewhere in the mid-30s dB range. But it's no use going into a noisy showroom and trying to properly gauge how a fridge will sound in my quiet home. So I'm wondering if there's a way I can test these different noise levels at home before I buy, to see what's the difference.
I have a sound recording that ideally I would like to remove the background sound from. My recording has unfortunately captured the unwanted sound of an episode of Doctor Who being played from a TV in the background. Is there a way to filter that out? [more inside]
I need to e-mail a small audio file to my office in such a way that it automatically plays as soon as the e-mail is opened by the recipient. Can this be done and, if so, how? I can embed the audio into a graphic if necessary or create it in any format. The file wouldn't be larger than maybe 1MB. My office uses Lotus Notes v8.5 mostly on PCs but also a few Macs. Thanks in advance.
I want to buy a new car stereo, but have no idea how to google for the features I'm looking for. What I really want is a double din stereo that has a usb port on the front where I can plug in my iphone 5 and play it through the stereo. Now comes the hard part, I want to control the iphone from the iphone. Not through the stereo interface. In otherwords, I want to use the USB port as an Aux out. [more inside]

I'm looking for new headphones or earbuds. Sound quality isn't that important. Long-term comfort and build quality are. [more inside]

Even with the ringer set on maximum volume, I tend not to hear my phone ringing when I'm out walking on a busy London street. I'd like a ringtone that will be audible over traffic noise, but not be earsplitting or annoying when I'm indoors. Are there any acoustic properties (other than sheer loudness) that I should look for in a ringtone to help it stand out against a background of car engines and other street noise?
I am a performer looking for some type of system to remotely control audio. And I have no idea where to begin. [more inside]
Can anyone recommend an inexpensive portable amplifier to use in my car so I can listen to my iPod? [more inside]
i once heard a lawyer claim you can "fight" copyright claims by altering frequency and introducing manipulation to the audio samples. following text "SOUND SAMPLING PROTECTION AND INFRINGEMENT IN TODAY'S MUSIC INDUSTRY" claims this is null. can anyone clarify this?
We're looking to play music and other audio at a cottage. Do we want a mini system, powered speakers or what? [more inside]
Trying to decide what to get, here. I've got an interal 750gb 5400 rm drive in the MBP that very occasionally throws up the dreaded "drive too slow" dialog in Logic at only 6 or 8 tracks of 24 bit 44.1 kHz. [more inside]
I'm looking for a particular recording of Alan Ginsberg reading America. It was on a mix tape I lost many years ago, and the particular moment that stands out is when he says "America I am the Scottsboro boys", someone in the (high as a kite and raucous) audience shouts out "you are the Scottsboro boys!" Any pointers would be helpful, either to purchasable media or to online video.
I recently heard this obscure piece and was blown away. What other similar audio work can you recommend? Poetry/short story read well with tight ambient sound effects? Are there any websites that aggregate those types of work? [more inside]
If you have a low-end A/V receiver (less than $400) that has lasted without problems for 5 years or more, tell me the brand name. I won't buy the same model that you bought five years ago, but I may choose the same brand, and go buy the latest equivalent offering manufactured from them. [more inside]
I have a record player from the 1970s (a Garrard 2025 TC to be exact). How difficult (or risky) would it be to replace the sound input from the tape deck with a mini-jack input so that I can play MP3s (such as from an iPod) through the speakers? Is it just a matter of taking the back off, cutting wires and splicing them together?
Can anyone tell me if Audio Visual Entrainment (AVE) actually does anything? Does it actually help with depression/anxiety, or is it all just a bunch of hooey? Is it worth the money?
I've been tasked with filming a series of seated "talking head" interviews using my DSLRs. What's the best way to create a minimal audio setup that will have acceptable quality, be reasonably easy to set up on location and to edit the final results, and also be reasonably cost-effective? My dad recently gave me his mid '70s-era receiver. It's a Kenwood KR-5600 (here's a photo). I've got it up and running and it mostly sounds great to my ears, but the sound sometimes fluctuates (cutting/fading in and out) when I'm playing my turntable through it (a Toshiba SR-F770 direct drive...nothing fancy). XLD was working fine unless I have too many albums (such as 30 folders/albums apiece). I am not figuring out the interface on MAX for a batch conversion with several subfolders. I basically am using VBR to compress my music to smaller mp3 format. On XLD, there is Preferences-->Preserve directory structure-->subdirectory search depth "0", which makes it work on a small scale, like 10 folders or so, before crashing. So, if anyone can tell me what I am missing on MAX's menu or if they had the problem with XLD and fixed it, I am good to go. I like XLD's interface but it won't process my whole iTunes at a go.
I'm looking for an under $60 set of headphones with a detachable cord/cable. Every corded headset I've bought has failed because of the cord, so being able to replace it is important. [more inside]
Anyone know of an simple, reliable audio player for Android that can stream audio from a regular URL, and will continue streaming with the screen off? [more inside]
I really want to combine my headphones with my microphone so that I can use it as a headset on my home phone. So I got a 3.5mm splitter and a 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter so that I can plug the mic and headset together, then reduce it to 2.5mm so it can plug into my phone. It doesn't work. Why? I am considering writing a novel/story that involves the idea of people living among us who are somewhere between three and eight inches tall, but I don't know enough about the physics of sound to know if normal height humans would be able to speak to these tiny people. Would their voices be too high-pitched to hear at all, or just very difficult to understand? Would our voices be understandable to them? [more inside]
I have two sets of speakers on opposite sides of a room, connected to Windows boxes, that I would like to stream music to. AirPlay isn't working out too well. What's the best alternative? [more inside]
