I need help identifying this bird. A fried took the photo while traveling in Texas a few days ago. The bird was seen in the urban area of Dallas, TX. Thanks!
The main melody goes something like G# A G# F# D# G# (the last G# is lower), which is then repeated several times transposed to different notes. What is this piece?
I'm trying to remember a book I read about BASIC game programming when I was a child. I don't know the exact publication date, but it would have been in the late 1980s or early 1990s that I borrowed it from the library. It was about how to write a text adventure game set under the ocean. Can you help me? [more inside]
What movie did I see in school in the late 80's that featured sheep being punctured with a huge needle-ish poker thing to save the sheep by releasing internal gas resulting from grazing on the wrong kind of grass? And does all that really happen?
A friend of mine came over in a panic this morning because she found two strange little bugs in her bed. She captured one and we have photos. What is this insect?
ASKING FOR A FRIEND: She is trying to remember the name of an old picture book that was about an invisible dog. We think it was originally published in the 30s, then re-released in the 90s at Costco as part of a set of three picture books, one of which was about a lion. [more inside]
What is this song? Chorus: "iiiiiit's alllll-right" [more inside]
WhatIsThisSongFilter: What song is this?(link goes to my blog where I'm humming it) Recent-ish male singer, R&B/rock, angsty, heard in the US. SoundHound and Midomi fail me.
I went on a walk today and saw these great trees flowering. The flowers are about the size of an orchid flower, and kind of look like one, too. On the same street, there were different trees with white flowers and with pale pink striped flowers, maybe light purple ones, too. What are they? [more inside]

A literary Sci-fi novel I read in the mid to late '90s. Sketchily remembered details: A boy has been genetically modified for talent in the visual arts. He is told at one point to "open his gift" and goes on to become a famous artist and perhaps something of a guru. A few more details within. [more inside]
I'd like to know who originally created this flowchart on asking a question after a speaker's presentation.
From this recent MeFi post, a young English child stands rapt in front of his TV watching the opening of Star Wars: Episode IV. That's all well and good, but what's that box behind him on the floor all about? [more inside]
When I was on vacation in Chicago last year I stopped by the Field Museum and happened to catch a video in the Senegal exhibit of a musician playing and singing a song that I thought was really beautiful. I recall that he was playing the kora and that the lyrics pertained to a shaman or similar person. I have tried looking on the Field Museum website and sending them an email but no dice so far. Does anyone know who is in the video and/or the name of the song?
So, I'm vacationing in the Cherokee National Forest in Tennessee, and my plant identification skills are useless around all this kudzu, apparently. I know poison ivy has a few distinguishing characteristics, but they all seem to overlap with this annoyingly omnipresent vine. [more inside]
I hate bugs, and I have one that is in my space. Can the generous and awesome amateur (or professional) entomologists of MetaFilter help me identify it, and perhaps give me a general sense of how dangerous it might or might not be? [more inside]
This plant suddenly appeared in my community garden/allotment. It has sprays of tiny white buds, that open into tiny white flowers with five petals. Inside there's a small green fruits (?) that look like small tomatoes and have grown to about 6mm-7mm (about 0.25 inches). Any ideas what it is? - Thanks!
I saw this object on a table outside a thrift shop in a small town in eastern Washington State, US. It is about 3 feet long and made out of hard plastic. It was selling for about $100 and was gone by later that day. What is it? Full view, Left side, Right side. A working theory is that it has something to do with some kind of crafting activity, possibly quilting.
What is this short story I read sometime in the late 1990s? Plot involved two teenage girls in the 1960s, Beatlemania, and the terrifying truths of growing up. [more inside]
I have a large tupperware full of a crystalline white powder. It could be sugar, or it could be xylitol. How can I tell? So far I've found two possible ways: burn it and record the energy per gram; feed it to dogs. I would prefer not to do the second, as xylitol kills dogs. I'm open to the first, if someone wants to link me to a good experimental method for such. But I'd really love a third way.
My spouse went surfing and found this bird bobbing on the waves. There seemed to be something wrong with the bird so he took it home. Here's another pic. The bird is very passive and doesn't move much, so we're guessing it's either ill, injured or exhausted. What bird is this? And what should we do with it? We're in Holland. [more inside]
I have a bunch of flowers in my yard. Pic 1. Pic 2. What are they? I am particularly interested in the blue one, but there are an awful lot of flowers.
I haven't had any luck identifying this through the WhatTheFont! automagical service nor the Identifont step-by-step quiz so now I bring it to you. What's the typeface used in this old GATOR$ sign?
I have part of a song stuck in my head. The lyrics I can remember are something that sounds like "A A, B B - CCDD, CCDD" - that is literally what is being sung, it's not the rhyme scheme. Who is the artist and what is the track called? [more inside]
My in-laws are giving me a couple of houseplants, and I'm trying to identify them, or at least find out if they are dangerous to our cats. Photos after the jump. [more inside]
I received several plants from a friend of mine to start my indoor garden. Neither of us knows what type of plant this is, despite hours of trawling gardening websites. Photo. [more inside]
Sometimes, one of the first pages of a library book will bear an identifying stamp made of perforations punched through by a special tool. This practice seems to have disappeared, and Googling for it has only frustrated me. What is the tool called and where can I find one? [more inside]
You know how you can just remember a few details about some subject from your youth, and it's going to bother you until you can reveal the full scope of that memory? Yeah, I'm right there. I'm looking for a series of books. They were in the SF/F section in the 1980s. They were probably popular because their covers resembled Frazetta prints, and they tended to be really violent (i.e. jumping on the popularity of Conan). [more inside]
My cat had something on his fur, near his left rear thigh, that looked like a slug. It was about an inch long and 3-5mm wide, black, and shiny. He is a fraidy cat who will not tolerate being touched. He only just tolerates playing chases with a piece of string, so I spent some time with him this morning doing just that and trying to take a picture. I was not able to get a picture that was clear enough. He actually washed around whatever it was, but only once, and he didn't dislodge it in the process. We tried to catch him and failed. He got outside. Since he has so many hangups it is possible that he won't come back and likely that he won't trust us for another six months if he does. He only knows a few words, but "vet" is one of them and he has a very strong reaction to that one, so the effects of stuffing him into a pet carrier can only be imagined, even if we had any hope of accomplishing that now. So: what external feline parasite looks like a slug, is about an inch long and lurks on the fur near the thigh, and what do we do about it in the unlikely event that we get the chance?

One of my friends posted this picture on Flickr with the caption, "After several months, there's still no billboard on this thing. So what is it?" I have no idea so I'm turning to you.
Some neighbor dropped off this flowering plant (picture 1, picture 2), and I'm trying to figure out what it is, and (BONUS QUESTION) whether it's toxic to the cats. Little four-petalled yellow flowers, thick waxy-feeling leaves, roughly a foot tall in its pot. Okay thanks for reading, for your time here's a nice pic of Thunder Perfect Cat on cat tranquilizers
I think this is a belt buckle, and I think the flattened star is a familiar a logo, but I can't put my finger on its ID. Help?
I am trying to identify a tree (or shrub thing pruned into a vaguely tree-like shape) that I walk by every day. It has purplish/magenta-ish blossoms and it smells lovely. No it is not a lilac. It is currently in bloom (in the Pacific Northwest). Pics inside. [more inside]
My cousin is trying to track down the exact location shown in this photo. The photo is about 20 years old, and was taken somewhere in Ireland.
I inherited an existing plot in a community garden a few weeks ago, and there was a medium sized plant that seemed pretty established, so I left it alone. It is now an extremely large plant. The vines have fine spiky hairs, and the leaves are about 5 inches long, with 3 or 5 lobes and serrated edges. Does anyone recognize it?
I'm trying to identify two separate growths I'm unfamiliar with, just for curiosity's sake. The first is a tight, cauliflower-like dome found on the base of a cut tree trunk. The second formed tiny red "spears" on a weed leaf. Pics within. [more inside]

So, walking with the dog in a local land preserve today, we came across an artillery piece. Placed there sometime, I'm sure, in the last 50 years by the former property owner (who has since donated the land). Can anyone identify this? (No, there hasn't been a major battle anywhere near here, that little skirmish we had with Ohio over Toledo took place 60 miles south of here, and that was in 1836)

My friends have a house-sit. The house's owners possess two of these objects. We don't recognize them. The blades are sharpened, and they were stored beneath the sink. We have some strong theories, but no real answers. The owners are Bangladeshi Americans, if that helps. [more inside]
I think it's a recent song - The chorus has has a woman singing in a simple voice. She sounds young and has a neutral accent - the non-chorus parts of the song I think is a reggae hip hop deal, but not sure. [more inside]
