Wireless bridge throughput for home networking - better than repeater?

I've read some of the previously posted questions on this (not to mention Googling) and still have not read a 100% clear answer. I know that using an extender/repeater slashes bandwidth. But if I use a wireless bridge, instead, will throughput be higher? [more inside]

What to do with a bag o' oysters?

Can a cobalt chrome ring be removed safely in the event of an accident?

I've been considering getting a cobalt chrome ring because it seems significantly more scratch-resistant than platinum or palladium yet not prone to shattering on impact like tungsten or ceramic. All the jewelry stores say that ERs/ambulances and the like have the necessary equipment to cut one off in the event of an emergency but I wanted to see if anybody here could confirm that. I'm in the USA. [more inside]

Have I given us all bilharzia?

I'm currently in West Africa. Yesterday I bought fish from the market. The fish in the market is sold live from big basins of water, it's killed, gutted, scaled and chopped in front of the buyer. It's supposed to be sourced from the local fishery but some vendors do cut corners, raise their own fish in ponds, etc. When cooked, the fish had several little black balls, like poppy seeds, just under the skin. One or two (or three or four) were deeper into the flesh. What could those have been? Of course I'm now thinking they were tiny parasitic snails and we're all doomed. Can anyone with a working knowledge of tropical parasites and food safety venture a guess here?

What is the best new video game music to listen to while programming?

I find that video game soundtracks are particularly good background music for programming, but I rarely have time to play new games and discover new music. In the past, I have enjoyed the Superbrothers soundtrack, the soundtrack to Hotline Miami, FTL, certain tracks from Kentucky Route Zero, and the last Deus Ex Machina. Can you recommend post-2014 video game soundtracks that help you to achieve a state of flow?

Anchoring a shelf when there's only drywall to secure it to

New home owner here (yay!). We just assembled a space-saver-over-the-toilet-shelf-cabinet-thingy and it needs to be anchored. The flat pack included the anchor strip and a wood screw for securing the anchor to the unit. It instructs the user to obtain a screw appropriate to the environment for anchoring. Our environment is essentially just drywall. To the side, there's a shared wall with the shower that sounds like it may have a stud in there, but can't be sure. [more inside]

Can you find the DIY couch instructions with the funny setup?

Several years ago I found some instructions for building your own (banquette style, I think) seating out of plywood, foam, etc. What sticks out in my memory was the author introducing the need for new furniture. Obviously I need new furniture.' Can you track down this page?

It's NOT David Copperfield!

I cannot remember this book and it is driving me crazy. When I was in France I was starving for English language books, and so came upon a relatively dense English novel about a young gentleman making his way in the world. It's not David Copperfield, but in a similar vein. The book was not an immediately recognizable to me at the time (I'm guessing it's a lesser work), but it's by a very well known English novelist, I'm thinking 18th or 19th century. [more inside]

How do I say no to cat sitting a diabetic cat?

A neighbor I don't know very well has asked me to take care of her cats for a few days. 2 of the 7 cats require twice daily pills and/or insulin. My own cat is diabetic so I know the routine. I don't know this person very well and I have never met her cats. She is willing to pay, but it's not about the money. I just don't want the responsibility or the time commitment. I have a really hard time saying no, but I KNOW I would regret agreeing to this. What is a friendly, but honest way to decline is request? PS- I have taken care of other neighbor's cats before but they are friends and the cats are low maintenance.

Books to Read After Losing Your Mother

A friend's mother recently passed away after a fairly brief but intense battle with pancreatic cancer. My friend is the type of person who is comforted by reading about similar experiences and I think finding books about mother loss or the grief process in general might help her process some of her feelings. Please recommend any books you think could be useful, keeping in mind that her mom died only a few months ago, so it might be better to have more general books rather than intensely personal ones (although I'm not 100% sure about that).

How doable is commuting between Oakland and Palo Alto on public transit?

I’m considering a job that’ll significantly increase my commute. I live a block from the 12th St. Oakland station and currently take BART two stops to Embarcadero. Very easy. The potential new job is steps from the Palo Alto Caltrain station, which would mean my commute ups to: 12th St. to Millbrae on BART, then Millbrae to Palo Alto via Caltrain.
