I've read some of the previously posted questions on this (not to mention Googling) and still have not read a 100% clear answer. I know that using an extender/repeater slashes bandwidth. But if I use a wireless bridge, instead, will throughput be higher? [more inside]
I'm looking for a scifi book where two alien species live on the same planet, with different speeds of living (it is not Fire Upon the Deep). [more inside]
A friend just brought back a dozen Willapa Bay oysters on ice. I love oysters, but have no idea how to shuck 'em, and (apart from the chance of impaling my hand) I'm somewhat leery of eating raw oysters clumsily shucked. [more inside]
I've been considering getting a cobalt chrome ring because it seems significantly more scratch-resistant than platinum or palladium yet not prone to shattering on impact like tungsten or ceramic. All the jewelry stores say that ERs/ambulances and the like have the necessary equipment to cut one off in the event of an emergency but I wanted to see if anybody here could confirm that. I'm in the USA. [more inside]
I'm 32 weeks pregnant with my first child. Meanwhile, my sweetie's father is succumbing to cancer (so, by the way, is my stepmom, whom I love dearly). I'm interested in tips on how to cope with tough stuff like this while pregnant, how to both be supportive and get the support I need right now. [more inside]
I work some hours every week in a friend's studio. Yesterday she observed that she was chilly, so had put the heat up from 21 to 22 degrees (Celsius). [more inside]
I'm currently in West Africa. Yesterday I bought fish from the market. The fish in the market is sold live from big basins of water, it's killed, gutted, scaled and chopped in front of the buyer. It's supposed to be sourced from the local fishery but some vendors do cut corners, raise their own fish in ponds, etc. When cooked, the fish had several little black balls, like poppy seeds, just under the skin. One or two (or three or four) were deeper into the flesh. What could those have been? Of course I'm now thinking they were tiny parasitic snails and we're all doomed. Can anyone with a working knowledge of tropical parasites and food safety venture a guess here?
I'm just getting started on the process of turning my PhD dissertation into a book. On rereading, I'm a bit shocked by how clunky the writing is and how much I haven't said. I'd love any advice from anyone who has done this or anything similar. What's the best approach I can take, and what pitfalls are there? [more inside]
I find that video game soundtracks are particularly good background music for programming, but I rarely have time to play new games and discover new music. In the past, I have enjoyed the Superbrothers soundtrack, the soundtrack to Hotline Miami, FTL, certain tracks from Kentucky Route Zero, and the last Deus Ex Machina. Can you recommend post-2014 video game soundtracks that help you to achieve a state of flow?

New home owner here (yay!). We just assembled a space-saver-over-the-toilet-shelf-cabinet-thingy and it needs to be anchored. The flat pack included the anchor strip and a wood screw for securing the anchor to the unit. It instructs the user to obtain a screw appropriate to the environment for anchoring. Our environment is essentially just drywall. To the side, there's a shared wall with the shower that sounds like it may have a stud in there, but can't be sure. [more inside]

I was at a Bank recently 15 minutes before they open. They have a lobby with an ATM machine that can be accessed with your ATM card. A rough looking dude in his 30's was walking very fast to get in to the lobby without using a card. I let the door close quickly behind me as the bank asks you not to let people in without them using their card. [more inside]
After 35+ years of spectacle wearing I've decided to give contacts a go. So at my latest optometry visit I asked the specialist about it and she said it was possible. However It seems that, here in Turkey at least, I am not able to get a lens strong enough for my left eye. So the specialist has written two different prescriptions. [more inside]

Had a tiff last night with my boyfriend regarding leg stubble. When I tried to get frisky he told me I needed to go shave first since it had been three days. This has come up before and I'm feeling a bit hurt and resentful. He insisted he was joking and didn't care if I'd shaved. Do I need to just let it go? [more inside]
I'm trying to save money, and making sugar scrub favors with canola oil is SO much cheaper than coconut, sunflower, safflower, or olive oils. Is this a bad idea? I can't seem to find many blog posters who use canola oil, but it's a fraction of the price. I'd like to avoid any disasters like rotting, but I also don't want to break the bank.
Several years ago I found some instructions for building your own (banquette style, I think) seating out of plywood, foam, etc. What sticks out in my memory was the author introducing the need for new furniture. It was something like this: 'I loaned my apartment to some filmmakers for a shoot. After the fact, I discovered they made porn, and you can guess what they used my couch for. (They had sex on it.) Obviously I need new furniture.' Can you track down this page?

I cannot remember this book and it is driving me crazy. When I was in France I was starving for English language books, and so came upon a relatively dense English novel about a young gentleman making his way in the world. It's not David Copperfield, but in a similar vein. The book was not an immediately recognizable to me at the time (I'm guessing it's a lesser work), but it's by a very well known English novelist, I'm thinking 18th or 19th century. [more inside]
I've recently been getting an email message which appears to be dated 12/31/69, but has "no sender," "no subject," and "no content." The first couple of times I just deleted it, but now it pops back in almost simultaneously with the deletion, so that my mail icon chronically shows at least 1 unread message. [more inside]

Particularly, I am looking for recommendation of an excellent recording of an excellent performance. Sound quality matters here! I have long been a fan of the Pablo Casals rendition, but I would like to find a rendition I enjoy that is recorded with more fidelity. Of particular interest are recommendations available on Spotify, though I would be happy to go outside of Spotify and buy a version if need be.
I have a friend who is applying for a loan. He doesn't speak great English (nor read it well) and yet he was able to prepare a tax return in 2014 on his own. The issue is, due to an error that he made on the form, the underwriter wants proof that Uber and Raiser are the same company... something official or at least authoritative. I have Googled profusely and I can't find this. Anyone know where I can get it? He does NOT have his user agreement from 2014.
Specifically, how rainy is Seattle going to be next week? Yes, I checked the weather, and yes, it looks like it will rain, but what is the rain like? Constant downpour? Light drizzle? Stormy wind and driving rain? And what do people who work in offices wear on rainy days? [more inside]

I am looking for pricing references (e.g. what to charge) for photography sold to a business, for example a photographer selling a few landscape photos for use on a large banking client's website. A neighbor I don't know very well has asked me to take care of her cats for a few days. 2 of the 7 cats require twice daily pills and/or insulin. My own cat is diabetic so I know the routine. I don't know this person very well and I have never met her cats. She is willing to pay, but it's not about the money. I just don't want the responsibility or the time commitment. I have a really hard time saying no, but I KNOW I would regret agreeing to this. What is a friendly, but honest way to decline is request? PS- I have taken care of other neighbor's cats before but they are friends and the cats are low maintenance.

Hello all. I'm looking to build or buy a new rig for photo editing in Lightroom CC (6). I'm dealing with some rather large .dng files around 60-90 MB in size and it's just killing my current rig. My current computer is a 5 year old HP Pavilion Elite HPE-170f with an Intel Core i7 920 2.66 GHz, 15 GB Memory, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 with 1.8 GB Memory and a 500 GB Samsung EVO 850 SSD for my OS (Windows 7) and my Camera Raw Cache (currently set at 25 GB). My images are currently stored on a separate internal HDD. It's a pretty slow WD Green drive. [more inside]
A friend's mother recently passed away after a fairly brief but intense battle with pancreatic cancer. My friend is the type of person who is comforted by reading about similar experiences and I think finding books about mother loss or the grief process in general might help her process some of her feelings. Please recommend any books you think could be useful, keeping in mind that her mom died only a few months ago, so it might be better to have more general books rather than intensely personal ones (although I'm not 100% sure about that).
The policyholder is Allianz. Just wondering if I include the amount of the original premium in the cost to be reimbursed. I've heard it both ways--just wondering what the standard is. Thanks!
I’m considering a job that’ll significantly increase my commute. I live a block from the 12th St. Oakland station and currently take BART two stops to Embarcadero. Very easy. The potential new job is steps from the Palo Alto Caltrain station, which would mean my commute ups to: 12th St. to Millbrae on BART, then Millbrae to Palo Alto via Caltrain. This looks to be about 1.5hrs each way… minimum. [more inside]
The pilot light in the water heater has been going out repeatedly. I've since realized that there is a loud bang -- you could even call it a boom -- associated with the pilot going out. I was born when my parents were but teenagers, and I never met my biological father. Twenty-six years later, I'm on the hunt for him. My mom knows hardly anything, but she's given me all the information she has (full name, name of parents, sister's name, date of birth). How do I use this information to find him? Should I hire a private detective? Or are there easier ways to go about this search. Any advice is appreciated. (Anecdote: Years ago, I mailed a letter to the house that is listed as his parents' house. However, the letter was returned to sender.)
