how to leave job without screwing anyone over?

I've recently realised that it would be in my best interest to leave my current job. I actually feel quite passionate about the projects I'm working on, and I am aware leaving now would put a lot of people in terrible positions. Is there any way to minimize the damage if I leave this post? [more inside]

What does it mean to "accept a resignation"?

Worst nightmare most cherished dream - new job in time of crisis

Dear AskMe, I have had a family tragedy and a new job offer. Almost simultaneously. I was told on Sunday that both my parents are seriously ill. I told my current employer that I would be taking leave to care for them for at least a week, maybe a month, effective immediately. And on Tuesday I received a job offer. My question is: how do I break the news to current employer that I will, be resigning and taking four weeks leave? Basically, that I will not be back? [more inside]

Should I tell my former employer why I left?

I recently quit a new job because of a toxic and dysfunctional environment. In my resignation letter I just said it wasn't a great fit, but a few days later they contacted me and asked for honest feedback about why I left. Friends are concerned that responding could open me up to some sort of liability. Should I? [more inside]

When should I resign?

I'm quitting my job next month and I was planning on giving the standard two weeks notice. However, my husband has to have surgery (non-life threatening, but he'll be out of work for 1-2 weeks). If I actually gave two weeks, the first week of my notice would be the week that I'm taking time off for his surgery. So, should I wait until after I come back from his surgery and give just one week notice? [more inside]

Should I keep my resignation secret?

I sent my resignation a few days ago after several years in the company. Giving resignation notice with or without an official offer letter?

I was offered a fantastic new job 3 days ago, and I accepted. They want me to start in 4 weeks, but they haven’t yet given me an official offer letter. The usual advice is to wait for the offer letter before giving notice, right? Well, here's my dilemma: 1) Starting next week, I'm leaving for 3 weeks on my honeymoon. If I wait till next week to give notice, I'll have less than a week left in the office. I work in an extremely small office (4 ppl), and I’ll be putting everyone in a difficult position. 2) I don't want to burn any bridges because I'm using work data for my dissertation. 3) The HR woman at the New Job says I don't need to wait for an offer letter. Should I take her word for it? Should I give notice with or without an offer letter? [more inside]

How do I quit my job in such a way that I still collect upcoming bonus?

I am on the verge of leaving my job at a large game company (the largest) in order to start work elsewhere. Our annual bonus (based on company performance over the last year, expected to be quite good this year) isn't issued till June 1st. I am wondering-- if I give notice and leave before June 1st, am I still entitled to this bonus? How can I find out without potentially spilling the beans that I'm leaving? (I haven't told my manager yet.) Also, if I give 2 weeks notice in such a way that my last day is after June 1st, can the company terminate me in less than 2 weeks so that I don't get my bonus? (In other words if I want to be absolutely sure of collecting my bonus, would it be safest to not give notice at all until June 1st? Assuming I can delay my start date at the new place that long...)
