My brother is being charged with a criminal offense -- I am researching similar cases to get a general understanding. Is it possible to somehow obtain Pre-Sentence Reports and Psychologist Reports from past-cases posted in say CanLII?
My +1 is outfitting the molecular biology and biochemistry side of a physics lab. He would like to get books (electronic and/or paper) to fulfill two needs: 1. protocols and reference - for in lab use 2. history or textbook of molecular biology - to help familiarize physics people with the field. Looking for suggestions for solid books that are readable and have good figures. [more inside]
What's current research say about what factors go into making a happy long-term relationship? In particular, I recently heard of some studies suggesting that couples who spend oodles of time together and are basically each other's best friends may be less likely to be happy than couples with separate hobbies, friends, etc. However, I can't seem to actually *find* any of those studies...anyone know of these?
I am a researcher at a university and I have an exciting idea for a research project that the Mars One project offers a unique opportunity to carry out, without requiring the mission to carry any extra equipment and that could run during the training stage, on earth, so it isn't a good fit for their "university challenge" competition. Rather I would like to contact someone from the team to discuss it. They say on the website they welcome contact from universities and scientists, but there is no information about how to contact them. [more inside]
I like my job, but not the location. I'd like to find something similar/related to what I'm doing now in Southern California, but don't really know where I should be looking, and would like some suggestions. [more inside]

Research help: What percentage of youth in foster care are born to parents who were at one point in foster care of themselves? I'm looking for information on the prevalence of intergenerational child abuse and experiences of foster care. In addition to the question above, I am also interested in what percentage of perpetrators of child abuse were victims of child abuse themselves. I've done some digging myself and haven't been able to find any data on this.
What could be the motivating factors behind this decision? [more inside]
I work in a behavioral research lab. We use computers to record behavior from research equipment. Some of these computers are flaking out, and I'd like to get recommendations for replacing them with ultracompact PCs instead of the full-sized desktops we have been using. [more inside]
With the encouragement of my significant other, what started as an article on foreign policy and international relations for a non-profit research centre is now being expanded into a book. I would like some advice on writing a book. [more inside]
I am an academic in a small program at an Australian university. My official title is Senior Lecturer. The head of our research group would like me to come up with an extra role description/job title for myself to encapsulate the responsibilities I take on within our group. I have two main responsibilities: building research connections and collaborations across different departments in the university, and developing our new MA programme. With that in mind, what could an appropriate title be? [more inside]
I am browsing cases in Canada, and noticed several cited "Unreported" cases. The "Unreported" have a year, last name and the general offense. No results when I try to search for them on canlii.org. The provincial court has told me they can't look it up without a first name. Can anyone advise on how I should proceed with my research?
I'm currently working on a project that involves figuring out the editorial policy of the New York times historically (specifically in the first 50 years or so of its existance as a newspaper). Any thoughts on where to start? [more inside]
Are any of the coaches / services out there that advise on how to change careers actually legit and useful? I need help figuring out a career change and I see a million books and services out there for me to consume, but I would really value recommendations of someone who has successfully used any of those resources. My goal is to find a position showcasing writing and/or research skills. [more inside]
I'm preparing a timeline of important virology-related events for work. We have some HIV-related and some bacteriophage-related material as well as some cancer-related stuff and some "greatest hits" (x-ray diffraction patterns, transduction, discovery of interferon). I'd like to expand our timeline to cover more diverse kinds of virology-related stuff. [more inside]

I'd like to compile a list of businesses in New York City—starting with Manhattan—that have been around for 100 years or more. I'd also like to include places the public can visit that aren't "businesses" per se. I'm guessing this information is publicly available, but I don't know where to start. Any guidance would be extremely helpful. Thanks!
I live in the West Midlands, home to a few good university libraries. Unfortunately, none of these libraries offer memberships to community members. My own alma mater, Birmingham City University, does not have an alumni library membership. It's very annoying. I would really like access to SagePub and T&F for journal articles. Can you recommend a university or college in the UK, Europe, or anywhere that offers remote access to their library's databases and where I could buy an annual membership?
The New York Times has historically been printed in multiple editions: a first edition, published around 10:30 PM; an early edition, printed the next morning; and afternoon/final editions, later that day. Are there copies of the earlier versions anywhere? [more inside]

I am doing research on health disparities, and health equity. I would like to find out when the following terms were first used in the US, or in what fields/disciplines: Health Disparities, Health Inequities, Health Inequalities. I would also like to find references to historical works which talk about these concepts, although not using the exact phrases. The earliest mention of health disparities I have found thus far, with a reference librarian, is 1991 Whitehead. Although I know the term has been employed prior to this date. I also know that W.E.B DuBois has written about about health differences experienced by blacks in Philadelphia as compared to whites. And Engels has written about inequalities due to SES. However, I would like more sources, and the reference librarian and I are stumped. At this point, we are not finding what I am looking for in articles and therefore the reference librarian suggested I started looking in books, we are just not sure where to start. Thanks Hivemind! Any creative ideas to find this information are much appreciated!

So I've decided I make enough to put someone on my personal projects full time and I'd like to go the virtual personal assistant route. And I was wondering what i should know. What should a monthly salary be? Are there certain countries it's trickier with? What duties are best served? Transcription? Research? First drafts? I've tried googling but it seems like it's either four year old esquire articles or certain larger sites that have done enough SEO that everything points back to them. So it's time to ask the experts: the hive mind.

We have an excessive interest rate on our home. We tried to refi, and the appraisal came in a good $40,000 less than it needed to in order to qualify. So some of our more numerically-talented friends ran some numbers for us in an attempt to find alternative solutions and found a weird discrepancy that makes it appear we owe $15,000 more on the loan than we do... I have a staff position in academic research. I received a verbal job offer two and a half weeks ago for a higher position in a different lab, and I gave notice to my current PI (my boss) immediately. I haven't gotten the official job offer yet, and I think my PI might cause me to lose the offer... Also, I'm kind of just freaked out in general and need some fresh eyes. Am I freaking over nothing, or is trouble brewing here? [more inside]

I have a very strong amateur interest in a niche subject (the history of computational labor processes). I think have a somewhat novel idea for research that builds on ideas that seem to be gaining currency in journals like Technology and Culture. I'm not an academic, and have very little academic background. What should I know if I decide to prepare an article for submission to a peer reviewed journal for the first time? [more inside]
So, I recently got selected to do undergraduate physics research this summer. Great! Awesome! Yay me! However, my research advisor has asked me to use something called IDL to analyze tomographic images of compounds and turn them into 3D images. This is good news, because IDL is used a lot by astronomers to analyze astronomical data, and I want to continue my education in astronomy. But, I've never used IDL ever before. I'm not even sure exactly what it is (a programming language?). My question is this: how do I get up to speed so that I can hit the ground running with my research? Difficulty: Research begins in two weeks. Details: [more inside]
Authors Of AskMe, has this happened to you? During my self-imposed creative hiatus over the last year or so I conducted a lot of research into what would be my dream project. A project I could be passionate about, the kind of book I'd really want to exist. So I made a list of every thing, character, concept, idea, sudden kind of twist I'd like. I have three notebooks of this stuff. I cross-indexed it and included all my references. I have an astounding about of detail on what I want to put in and touch on but no actual story. I keep staring at it, like it's a list of SCP entries, and I can't think of a damn thing for anyone to do with these collected items, places, motifs, themes, and people. It's frustrating cause I can come up with quick pulp narratives on the fly for stuff I'm not working as hard on but every attempt to break and outline a rising action for these people results in rapid breathing and complete brain fume-lock. I keep asking "What does the main character want?" and coming up with nothing. Is this common? Is there a resource for this? Can I pay someone to go through these ideas and find something that other people might want to read? [more inside]

For the first time ever, I've opened an account in Facebook and started using it. Wow...it has to be the greatest social research tool ever! Attitudes and opinions can be gauged without the presence of a social / market researcher. Facebook must be changing the landscape of advertising / social research beyond recognition. Moreover, it must be a political electioneers / pollsters dream. No more contrived focus groups.... Can anybody recommend some books or websites the delve into this?

So I'm trying to figure out who I would hire - theoretically - to do an index or census of a personal life. I want someone who would be able to look at a life (with consent) to study it. The person would follow a subject around to determine core friends/family/contacts on a daily basis and then do research based on relationships. Then they'd objectively drill down into some key data points. - How many of the people in my life up to one relationship away (aka my brother's good friends) are married or single and for how long - How many of my past relationships are single/married and for how long Beyond that maybe some polling on specific questions about the subject from those people. So who am I looking for here? Is it a Private Investigator? A sociologist? A statistician? A life coach? Is there someone in an "I Heart Huckabees" way that you hire to do this sort of thing? Is this already a job or service someone provides and I don't know the name?
I'd like to practice unguided, solitary meditation in a manner that is backed by evidence to have a positive effect on blood pressure, attention span, stress--all the things meditation has been demonstrated to impact. And I don't give a single damn about engaging with why it works, the history of meditation, a theory of body or mind, the history of the person who created it, a community of meditators, or anything else. I completed my Masters dissertation (in the UK) which used a research-area standard measure to compare two populations of subjects. Nothing I hypothesised was found to be significant, and actually, even with heavy stratifying and manipulation, I couldn't find any links. I did, however, find a problem with the measure. Its creator is still doing research. How can I best share this problem to encourage others to look at it? [more inside]

I graduated with an M.A. in English and through luck, contracting, and family connections, came to work in nuclear power. My administrative role has changed to field work.
