dissertation-free research

I love research and learning, and keep running into a lot of research groups and programs that sound absolutely fascinating. However, most of them either involve getting a Masters or Ph.D., or require possession of a Ph.D. beforehand - which I do not want. Is there any way I can still get involved with these research groups that doesn't involve being responsible for an academic paper? Are there similar groups that do this kind of research work that aren't necessarily academic? [more inside]

Given my current skill set, what companies would love to hire me?

I'm currently working in prospect research in higher ed, and I'm thinking of moving on to a new position in the near future. While ideally I'd like to stay in the same field, I've managed to become somewhat knowledgeable in a few different areas, and was wondering if there are other industries/companies that might be searching for people with my skill set. Ironically enough, I'm not sure where to start looking, so I'd would love to hear your suggestions! [more inside]

What should I know before hiring a virtual assistant?

So I've decided I make enough to put someone on my personal projects full time and I'd like to go the virtual personal assistant route. And I was wondering what i should know. What should a monthly salary be? Are there certain countries it's trickier with? What duties are best served? Transcription? Research? First drafts? I've tried googling but it seems like it's either four year old esquire articles or certain larger sites that have done enough SEO that everything points back to them. So it's time to ask the experts: the hive mind.

I want to move my career in a different direction.

I graduated with an M.A. in English and through luck, contracting, and family connections, came to work in nuclear power. My administrative role has changed to field work. I prefer office work, especially writing reports etc. My area in nuclear is very specialized, and due to downsizing in the industry, I feel a real need to get familiar with my prospects for other jobs and diversify my skills. However, I have no idea how to begin, research being one of my weak points. Long explanation + details inside. [more inside]

Focus?

I recently finished a very rigorous school year. For the last month I was in class/lab/doing homework around 12-16 hours a day 7 days a week. I am looking for tips, anecdotes or exercises for keeping up a similar, though less crazy level of productivity now that I am not racing against the hard deadlines (homework and projects, tests, etc.)? GSA Contract...Help!

My boss has asked me to work on getting our company a contract with the U.S. government's General Services Administration (GSA). I have been doing some research and reading everything I can about it, but I think this may be too big of a job for just me. Does anyone have any experience with working on a contract like this or know of any good resources for help? Anything that any of you can offer would be great. Thanks!
