Academic and creative freedom ... behind a mask or not?

I need a(nother) job title

I am an academic in a small program at an Australian university. My official title is Senior Lecturer. The head of our research group would like me to come up with an extra role description/job title for myself to encapsulate the responsibilities I take on within our group. I have two main responsibilities: building research connections and collaborations across different departments in the university, and developing our new MA programme. With that in mind, what could an appropriate title be? [more inside]

academic library access for the independent academic?

I live in the West Midlands, home to a few good university libraries. Unfortunately, none of these libraries offer memberships to community members. My own alma mater, Birmingham City University, does not have an alumni library membership. It's very annoying. I would really like access to SagePub and T&F for journal articles. Can you recommend a university or college in the UK, Europe, or anywhere that offers remote access to their library's databases and where I could buy an annual membership?

Funding for PhD student attending an overseas academic conference?

I am a criminology PhD student based in London and have been invited to present at a conference in Tampa, Florida next year. The conference is perfect for my area of research; the only thing is neither my university nor the hosting institution can provide funding to cover my travel expenses. Are there any other bodies that might be able to provide some funding?

Are you a neuroscientist? Happy in academia? Want to do science...

So I have been working in an entirely different field for the last years and was never entirely sure about what I wanted to do with my life. I am certain at this point that I want to work in a field which involves, you know, nervous systems. Unsurprisingly, I am thinking of academia. [more inside]

Should I tell them I eventually want to teach?

Should I mention my plan to continue academic research in my interview for a fundraising management job at a small college that is part of a major research university? I have a lot of industry experience and raised strong results. I want to stress that I understand the time pressures but I also do not want to overload myself with more than one back-story. I want to write-up, but Academic Research has re-wired my brain!

The way I research (academic or otherwise) is increasingly incompatible with the tools I have. Reams of handwritten notebooks, and hundreds of word docs vs a highly tagged website only add to my self-created confusion. I'm drawn to Tinderbox software as a possible solution, but as an adamant PC user I'm locked out. How do you order your research? / How to write-up my PhD now my brain is fried? [more inside]

Grammar check - is Word my only option?

I'm writing a postgrad research paper. English is my second language (Afrikaans being my first), and though I am fluid in both, I still sometimes trip up on silly grammar issues with English, particularly tenses. I use Word, but was wondering -- does anyone know of software aimed specifically at writing academic/research texts? For what it's worth, I use MLA formatting with in text citation.

Academic Research

Academic research resources: I do research in the field of global health, at the intersection of medicine and social science. After months of using Medline, Proquest, and ASSIA and being frustrated, I just stumbled upon Scopus, and it's rocking my world. But now I wonder: is there anything better that I'm missing?
