A friend of mine gave me a damaged portable hard drive to see if I can rescue some of his data. It has a SATA connector and it gets recognized by the BIOS, although it tells me that the SMART readings are bad. I can't access it under Windows but I booted to a Linux image and I could mount the drive and look at the contents. The Files are still there but they are all the same size, 4kb. I don't know anything about data rescue so I didn't want to experiment too much as not to damage the drive further. I downloaded some Linux Boot images,
Knoppix,
SystemRescueCD and
UltimateBootCD, which all have various tools for hard drive diagnostic and repairs. Now what would you suggest to try first?

I found a dog recently with some friends. He ended up in the shelter because he has a chip, but the numbers associated with his chip are disconnected and he is now up for adoption. The problem? He's a 7-year-old male German Shepherd.

Say you're on a cruise ship in the middle of the Atlantic and something happens and it capsizes. How long would you have to be out there until the Coast Guard rescues you? Hours? Days? How fast can those big helicopters get to you? I am talking middle of the ocean here. Thanks.

What should I do with
this Jade Plant rescue? I noticed it in the outdoor planter of an abandoned house and grabbed it. It's about 11" tall, and was under a bit of an overhang, so has been pretty much completely starved of water for yoinks. The leaves are all pretty much gray, deflated and leathery, except the very newest baby leaves (which seem extremely new -- but there aren't very many of the new ones). It came out with a bit of a root system, so I think it will be fine to replant, but should I prune it way back? Way,
way back? Or leave the limbs but prune them? Or just it let it be to do as it will?

A Belgian friend of mine's dog just passed away. Recently, when we lost one of our animals, a different friend made a donation to a shelter she had knowledge of & respected in our pet's name. I found that deeply touching, and now, I would like to do the same for this friend.

My wife thought
Last of the Mohicans had a scene where the heroine was buried alive to protect her from an Indian raid, with only a reed to breathe through. I just watched the movie, and didn't see anything like that. Is she thinking of another movie, or a (very) different cut of the film?

How can I house break a 6-year-old rescued scent hound when I live in a condo with shared corridors and an elevator?
After searching many rescue listings, I have found a cute dog that seems to be a good fit for me according to the adoption counselors. I plan to meet the dog this weekend and take her home early next week if all works as planned.
The rescue agency told me that she doesn't like pooping on leash, but will urinate on leash. They
think she'll be OK with the shared corridors and elevator. I'm mainly worried that she will make a mess in these common areas as I don't want to upset my neighbors. It is my understand that she will poop in the house at times because she doesn't understanding the concept of pooping on leash.

I am adopting a cat who needs a good name. I found him at the shelter where I volunteer; he'd been left outside and abandoned, and suffered from frostbite. He's losing part of his ear, all of his
pawpads (which will grow back), and several teeth, and half his whiskers have broken off. He was so anemic and dehydrated when he got there, the higher-ups decided he should be euthanized, but the shelter manager intervened, treated him with meds, and he survived.

I need great, imaginative, appealing names for black dogs! A friend operates a rescue organization for dogs and cats, and mentioned how hard it is to find homes for black dogs (see
Black Dog Syndrome)... and since I was already helping her come up with names, I thought I'd come up with a special list of Black Dog names that are perhaps evocative of personality types, and that might inspire interest so that potential adopters will maybe find their curiosity/sense of whimsy piqued and stop to at least read a description on the website, instead of just passing by any photo of a black dog. Some specific considerations inside...

I've become intrigued by the idea of these weekend meetings that the companies/government have to decide to rescue, buy, take-over each other. I understand that it's wise not to release the news whilst the stock markets are trading, but so often we hear about the US Fed meeting with banking execs 'over the weekend' and deciding such-and-such. How do they get them together?

What is the "man-overboard" or "we just spotted a stick-thin and hairy Tom Hanks on a makeshift raft" scenario for very large and heavy ships, like container ships? It's not practical to stop them and it can't be done in any reasonable amount of time or distance, and I assume they don't keep a helicopter on board. Do they drop a speedboat to go and pick the guy up, which then catches up with the ship?
