The SSD in my Macbook Pro seems to have completely failed. I managed to install OS X onto an external drive and attempted to run DiskWarrior on it. It took almost 24 hours and in the end was not able to repair the disk. It did allow me to mount the disk as read-only, but I'm not able to copy and save 90% of the files. Is there some Windows or Linux based software I could try that might be more thorough or effective? [more inside]
Can a young energetic kitty and an older mellow kitty make a good pair? [more inside]
My sister-in-law, who has been trying to find this poem for years, first heard it from her grandmother. It's at least 50 years old and rhymes.
My spouse went surfing and found this bird bobbing on the waves. There seemed to be something wrong with the bird so he took it home. Here's another pic. The bird is very passive and doesn't move much, so we're guessing it's either ill, injured or exhausted. What bird is this? And what should we do with it? We're in Holland. [more inside]
My friend and I found two abandoned kittens when we walked her dog last week. We saved them from the street, but neither of us can keep them (she: single mom who can't afford two cats; me: in Hoboken, NJ and already have two cats). She's willing to foster, but can only do so for the rest of the week as she's leaving for six weeks a week from today. They're great - playful and affectionate with each other and they turn on their motors as soon as you pick them up. She got an offer to make them barn cats, but they seem too sweet and gentle for that. They've been to the vet and are about 12 weeks old. They're being spayed tomorrow and will soon be ready for a home. My friend called a local rescue organization, but they don't have any foster homes available. Does anyone have any experience with a good rescue near Merritt Island, FL?
A friend in the Bay Area (Daly City) rescued an abused cat and is looking for a home for him. The cat is chipped to the abusive owner. [more inside]
I adopted a dog a month ago. The shelter held him for 10 days, but no one came to claim him. Now the shelter has received a call from someone claiming it is their dog, with a very sad story (death in the family) about why he was lost and no one looked for him. I feel very bad for these people if their story is true, and wonder if the dog would be happier with his original owners. I'm also very attached to the dog, as is my kitten, and have been crying a lot at the thought of giving him up. I can't get another dog now that I've started working in the afternoons - I had a lot of time this month to help him rehome. The dog was found not neutered despite being several years old, which makes me nervous about previous vet care, so I have asked the shelter to look into vet records. How can I make this decision? I have strong feelings on both sides of the argument.
Our adorbs rescue puppy is eating out of our hands, playing fetch and generally charming our socks off. But we cannot cannot cannot get a collar on him. Or a leash. [more inside]
I've adopted a dog from a local shelter, and I may have made a terrible mistake. I'm seriously thinking of returning her, but I've had her less than half a day. See details inside. [more inside]
My partner and I have been searching for a dog to adopt for the last two month or so - after our interview, home check and lots of hoops we are ready! The shelter we're approved by has found a match - yay! He's a small staffy that's calm, suitable for first time owners (like us), confident, good with kids, and well mannered. The only problem for me is - he's 11 years old. We are open to adult dogs, but we were thinking, uh more like 1 to 8 years old. Does anyone have any experience adopting older dogs? What should we be considering? [more inside]
When we brought home a new pup from a local rescue organization three months ago, we had no idea we were getting involved with a Crazy Lady. The adoption STILL isn't finalized and we really want to make it official and never deal with them again. Help me understand if their requests are reasonable and officially adopt my dog! My husband and I are in the process of adopting a dog. Based on online profiles and email conversations with foster families, we've got it narrowed down to two pups that have been fostered through two local rescue groups. Now we are scheduling in-person meetings with the dogs and "home visits" where they send a volunteer to make sure our house is ok for a dog. Should we be telling each group that we are deciding between two dogs, which we're meeting on Thursday and Friday? [more inside]
I volunteer with a rescue group that fosters and adopts out tiny dogs. I am looking for someplace that will custom-print either a collar or a pet bandana with the group's logo, so it's similar to the"adopt me" signs that many adoption groups use. Likely I'm going to want less than a few hundred, which seems to be below the radar for most commercial outfits. Any suggestions for a company that might do that without costing an absolute fortune?
I bought a bias-cut skirt made of t-shirt type fabric from Muji last week. It fit perfectly and draped beautifully and I was in love with it. Now I have washed it (40 degrees C, gentle setting) and it shrank really unevenly. It (just) still fits, but the hemline is dorky and uneven, and the skirt bulges weirdly at the seams. Is there anything I can do to save this? Rewashing and stretching? I can't return it to the store as I was travelling and there's no Muji here.

A friend of mine gave me a damaged portable hard drive to see if I can rescue some of his data. It has a SATA connector and it gets recognized by the BIOS, although it tells me that the SMART readings are bad. I can't access it under Windows but I booted to a Linux image and I could mount the drive and look at the contents. The Files are still there but they are all the same size, 4kb. I don't know anything about data rescue so I didn't want to experiment too much as not to damage the drive further. I downloaded some Linux Boot images, Knoppix, SystemRescueCD and UltimateBootCD, which all have various tools for hard drive diagnostic and repairs. Now what would you suggest to try first?

Say you're on a cruise ship in the middle of the Atlantic and something happens and it capsizes. How long would you have to be out there until the Coast Guard rescues you? Hours? Days? How fast can those big helicopters get to you? I am talking middle of the ocean here. Thanks.
What should I do with this Jade Plant rescue? I noticed it in the outdoor planter of an abandoned house and grabbed it. It's about 11" tall, and was under a bit of an overhang, so has been pretty much completely starved of water for yoinks. The leaves are all pretty much gray, deflated and leathery, except the very newest baby leaves (which seem extremely new -- but there aren't very many of the new ones). It came out with a bit of a root system, so I think it will be fine to replant, but should I prune it way back? Way, way back? Or leave the limbs but prune them? Or just it let it be to do as it will? [more inside]

My wife thought Last of the Mohicans had a scene where the heroine was buried alive to protect her from an Indian raid, with only a reed to breathe through. I just watched the movie, and didn't see anything like that. Is she thinking of another movie, or a (very) different cut of the film?

How can I house break a 6-year-old rescued scent hound when I live in a condo with shared corridors and an elevator? After searching many rescue listings, I have found a cute dog that seems to be a good fit for me according to the adoption counselors. I plan to meet the dog this weekend and take her home early next week if all works as planned. The rescue agency told me that she doesn't like pooping on leash, but will urinate on leash. They think she'll be OK with the shared corridors and elevator. I'm mainly worried that she will make a mess in these common areas as I don't want to upset my neighbors. It is my understand that she will poop in the house at times because she doesn't understanding the concept of pooping on leash. [more inside]

I am adopting a cat who needs a good name. I found him at the shelter where I volunteer; he'd been left outside and abandoned, and suffered from frostbite. He's losing part of his ear, all of his pawpads (which will grow back), and several teeth, and half his whiskers have broken off. He was so anemic and dehydrated when he got there, the higher-ups decided he should be euthanized, but the shelter manager intervened, treated him with meds, and he survived. [more inside]
