Touch 1 hour, touch 2 hours

As a stopgap to a full fledget RFID/NFC time reporting system, I'm probably setting up a couple of touch-screens to allow our members to enter their time in the shop. What's the simplest way for me to accomplish this? (Slideshow inside!) [more inside]

Thanks (for the newspapers), Obama

On November 5th 2008 and November 7th 2012 here in London England, I tried to collect as many British newspapers as I could that featured Barack Hussein Obama II's historic election to the presidency of the United States. The whole world was united in pride for the US on both of those days. Now that he's moving out of the White House, I feel like it's time to give them away; the question is, who gets them? [Preferably to someone in New York City. Sorry Duluth.] [more inside]

How to report a blog post thief using Google Ads to Google?

I have a blog, and found another site which is duplicating multiple posts of mine in their entirety (text, photos, captions, formatting, the works), in violation of the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 Unported License under which I publish. The blog in question is on Wordpress, but uses Google Ads. How do I report the site to Google? Is it likely that reporting the site to Google will result in the thief losing Google Ads revenue? Do journalist's careers suffer when they ask hard questions?

How bad is it really for a journalist who asks a politician a question and does not accept a dissembling, disingenuous, or simply irrelevant response? That politician may not give them another interview or call on them at press conferences, but does that actually cost the reporter prestige or income or job opportunities?

Best solution for ad-hoc parsing and reformatting of text?

I handle a lot of screenplays, recording scripts, game dialogue text tables, localization tables, and other text-related files. And I have a need to output to varying formats with varying goals--sometimes to reformat a screenplay to something more standard or to put text in a format that is ready to use by a game or other software. For simplicity's sake, assume that all input and output formats would be plain text. What is a good software tool to help with these format conversions? [more inside]

Can you help me find resources for journalists?

I am looking for journalistic organizations that, (1) provide statistical number crunching and (2) legal interpretation to help to reporters working on complex stories. Whenever I've had an ethical question, I sought the help of Poynter, but on this current project, I need more specific help. Are there non profit journalistic entities whose mission is to help freelance reporters and/or their organizations with their legal and quantitative research?

WWEMD? (What Would Errol Morris Do?)

Something that happened many years ago in my community is coming back to the fore in the form of multiple lawsuits. Many people were hurt and it turns out that a lot of people connected to my family were involved in one way or the other, on both sides: perpetrator and victim. There was a major cover-up operation back when it all went down and most of these people, perp and victim included, have moved on, in a way, from that time. I realize that I am uniquely suited to write this story , but I don't know how to go about getting people to talk to me, and talk to me on the record. [more inside]

This is a question for the experienced journalists of MeFi.

I'm a freelance journalist who is mostly self-taught. I didn't go to j-school and I've never worked on staff at a newspaper or magazine. While I'm confident in my research and writing skills (at least I know where I need to improve) there are a few "rules" of journalism that I feel like everyone else knows and I have never learned. Hence this question. [more inside]
