I’m currently in NY in an apartment without water, sewage, heat or electricity. I’m living elsewhere until my area gets these services back. As I understood it, an apartment without these sorts of things (not to mention the stench of sewage and sea water eating away at the belongings in the floor below and the mold that must be growing there – I think the tenants down there are simply walking away and not cleaning up) is considered uninhabitable. Aren’t renters, by law, not obligated to pay rent until these issues are fixed?

Hi
I am responsible for compensating a two year old TV bought for $900 then. (A guest in my party broke and no one is owning up...ex-landlord is behind me now)
Similar model (brand new) is $600 now all included and being demanded 600, citing the higher price paid then.
What is a fair price that I should pay?
How do I make a convincing reply ?
....please help....

What should I ask my potential sublessee's current landlord? I've never been a sublessor (or landlord or even gotten random craigslist roommates) before and could use a little guidance.

Can you recommend an independent insurance broker in Toronto, or alternatively an insurance company with whom you have had good experience, for taking out a tenants' insurance policy? I'd also appreciate any guidance with respect to whether it's a better idea to go with an independent broker, and risk getting stuck with a bad company at a better price, or go with a company with a better reputation even if the insurance costs more.

My friend, renting a room in a house, has found that the people he was renting from didn't actually own the house. He came home to find an eviction notice on his door and the locks changed. The fake landlords have moved all of their stuff out, changed their phone number, and are gone without a trace. Now my friend can't get to his stuff.

I accidentally broke a single glass window pane in my apartment. I couldn't believe how easily it broke, but now I see that it's 1/16th of an inch thick! No wonder! Landlord wants me to pay for the repair, I want ALL my windows replaced with 1/8" panes for free!
