I am trying to rent an apartment for a month in Playa del Carmen through a website that I found on google. Lets say it's called rent-playa-del-carmen.com (I can name the actual website if it's relevant). So far, I have been getting very professional responses with all my questions properly answered. The issue is that the agent is now asking for the full month of rent ($2500) plus $1000 deposit 30 days before my arrival. This is raising a bunch of red flags for me. Is this common or am I being scammed? Should I refuse and only pay the deposit? Is this such a big red flag that I I should walk away?
Hello! A group of friends and I are looking to go skiing this winter (probably around December) in Vermont and we're looking to potentially rent a cabin. Would anyone with any experience in this domain be able to help us out with suggestions? [more inside]
My girlfriend and I have spent several hours picking out places to stay from AirBNB listings in Copenhagen. It SEEMS like there are so many wonderful, available places to stay. But my booking requests (5 so far) have all been declined by the hosts. What's going on here? How do I get a successful booking? [more inside]
My wife, two kids, and a dog need a domicile in the fall/winter where we can live while our house is being worked on. The challenge is finding a place that would allow that short of a term, with a somewhat vague end date, all under a budget. Where to look? [more inside]
I moved out from a terrible landlord in North Carolina last June, and then because I was living in Chile with a postal strike/mail delays, the security deposit check had hit the 90 day void by the time it got to my bank. Now I'm back in the US and he won't give me my money back. [more inside]
Mefites of San Francisco: Where do you live? Where should I live? When should I move? How does this happen? I'm a special snowflake with my own special snowflake needs. [more inside]
We're hopefully going to get the go ahead on a job move to Portland, Maine very soon and want to get set up with a rental to move into when we get there. Looking for a pet friendly 2/3 bed house/apartment in either Portland itself or South Portland or nice neighborhoods very nearby. Is Craigslist the best place to look or is there something Maine/Portland specific that outsiders like us wouldn't know about? Any tips/area recommendations gratefully received!
My partner and I are looking for a house to rent in Seattle, which has become an increasingly competitive and expensive rental market. We've finally found a place that we're really excited about and we'll be touring it this weekend. Is there anything we can do to make sure we're the ones who get the house? Should we offer a deposit on the spot? Have credit reports on hand? Any other strategies that have helped you secure a rental in a tight market? [more inside]

I've got a wife, two small kids, a dog (although the dog doesn't always come with us), and an insatiable urge to get the hell out of LA in July. Where should we go? We'd like to rent a house in an area that's not too pricey but still nice and clean. Has to be within, say, a 4 hour drive of LA. Near the beach is a plus. Maybe not completely swamped with people is a plus. Are there any hidden gems, or should we just go to Santa Barbara like everyone else?
I'll be moving with my family (including two young kids) to the Lancaster, PA area in August. We'll be renting a place and I'd like to know the names of some good neighborhoods where we can concentrate our searches. In-town or slightly-outside-of-town are all okay (though I want to stay within a 40 minute drive of Middletown, where my husband will be studying). Important criteria: •Friendly neighbors •Relatively low crime •Good school zone is a plus •A cool neighborhood vibe is a plus
How can I tell if an apartment building has pests (e.g. rodents or roaches)? Am I being unrealistic to hope to find a place that doesn't? [more inside]
What do you now use instead of Craigslist for finding rentals, jobs, activities, etc.? I'm interested in both the paid and free options you've found.
When I moved into my apartment with my roommate, the manager at the time said we could remove or add roommates as we pleased and could even add a roommate and remove ourselves off the lease completely if we wanted to move away before the lease was up, so long as we notified the manager and signed a form. I am considering moving out before the lease ends. We now have a new manager and when I checked with her, she says this is not true, that I cannot be removed from the lease at all even if my roommate agrees to it. However, I looked over my lease and it seems to say that I absolutely CAN do that, as long as everyone agrees. (See extended for the exact lease quote.) [more inside]
If I want to charge visitors a fee to stay in the apartment I rent form a landlord, what might I want in my lease? Would I absolutely need a clause about subletting? What are the exceptions? [more inside]
I may be on the lookout for a new residence soon, and I'm open to alternatives to the usual apartment/house rental. In particular, living in an RV or camper trailer parked on the street outside of a friend's house (or in their driveway if long-term parking on the street is illegal) seems doable. And fun. And possible (I asked). What's it like? [more inside]

I'm PERHAPS overly paranoid about renting an apartment. I need some advice from sane, non-traumatized people to make sure I take all necessary precautions while also not rendering myself homeless by default. [more inside]
Asking for a friend: I'm leaving graduate school for a job in Houston, TX in a few weeks and I'm looking for the best short-term transportation situation - apparently there is no public transportation whatsoever going to my job, and I'd like to be able to, you know, get to work. The hitch is that while I'm leaving in 2 weeks, my wife is leaving in 3 months, and she needs our car to get to work. I've got a motorcycle, but it's cheapest to ship that in the moving truck when we move our stuff in 3 months (not to mention I'm not sure how quickly I can arrange for it to be moved out there, and if it gets there too late, it's not worth doing anyway). The story, short and sweet: My large, loud, talkative family is planning a reunion in the Marion / Wareham area next to Cape Cod for this summer. My quiet, privacy-requiring wife likes my family, and is happy to go, but absolutely needs a place to get away from them over a four day visit. [more inside]
Asking for a couple of friends living in Washington, D.C. They signed a lease and put down security deposits to rent a two-bedroom condo with move in on Saturday. The guy just called them and said that he's changed his mind, and he doesn't want to rent the place anymore and he is currently living there. What can they do about it since they haven't actually moved in yet? [more inside]
Any reccomendations for an apartment in Portland, Maine? Preferences: something with character - wood floors, loft-esque, something non "generic, cookie-cutter", walk to shops, dining, etc. Requirements: must accept cats (more than 1), not to exceed $1,200. I have done a *lot* of looking online, but at this point I would really like first-hand opinions. Thanks!
We are looking for a way to get out of the cold for at least two months during the northeast winter and have been trying to figure out if its possible to rent a small ( one bedroom) place in the coast of Florida. But not near the hustle and bustle of Miami or Boca. We are looking for a laid back sleepy and affordable spot to be and stay warm during Feb/March, any ideas?
A studio or one-bedroom in a desirable* part of Brooklyn for less than $1200/month. Is this even slightly possible anymore? [more inside]

Asking for a friend: Are car rental desks at Newark Airport (specifically National, in P3) in heated areas or are they out in the parking garage? Flying in later in the weekend so probably don't need snowpocalypse warnings but could someone more familiar with the airport help out? Thank you.
I'm looking at renting a cottage around Ottawa from just before Christmas to just before New Year's Day--Dec 22-29, give or take a day. I don't know the area at all, and haven't the faintest idea where to start. Help? [more inside]
My friends and I live in NYC. We want to spend a night at a local beach (Far Rockaway, Sandy Hook, Fire Island, whatever). Ideally, this would consist of a trip via public transit to a beach, and then staying at a reasonably priced hotel close to said beach. If possible, we'd like to avoid renting a car or splurging on a vacation rental. [more inside]

Finally moving to my new house Friday! This is coinciding with a nasty breakup with a very unreasonable woman. She's unstable and deploying some very low, tacky, petty moves. Moving to New York from Florida to take a job at the beginning of January, and i'm having some trouble finding a good place to live, mostly that I don't really know how to find good places that aren't on craigslist/padmapper. The friend i'm going to live with works in Greenpoint, so we're leaning heavily on that neighborhood, just off the Greenpoint or Nassau stops, so only one of us has to take the subway to work. I have never booked anything but hotels before, so am a little worried about just going the craigslist route. The other 3 sites look legit, but maybe there are other, hidden, gems :) thanks in advance

Coming down the New Orleans for Mardi Gras and was looking for recommendations on the best option for a group of 6-8+ on where to stay. I've been to Mardi Gras in the past, but always stayed local with friends - while this is clearly an optimal/cheaper option, it's not available to me for the coming Carnival season. [more inside]
