We're in Toronto. Our friends are in Chicago. We'd like to meet up roughly halfway between our cities over the Christmas break (i.e. in Michigan or Ontario), and rent a house or cottage somewhere quiet with some natural scenery. Any recommendations? [more inside]
We've rented a rehearsal space for our theatre company on the second storey of a really old shophouse. Our rehearsals are pissing off our downstairs neighbour. How can we soundproof our activities? [more inside]

I looked at this really nice, huge, new house for rent, but the landlord is renting out each room individually, and now they are all vacant because the house's new, so I don't know who's gonna be my house mates!!! Even men or women - I don't know!! [more inside]
On Friday, I rented my first-ever tuxedo for a black-tie wedding. On Saturday, I went to said wedding. On Sunday, I noticed that there's somehow red wine stains on the tuxedo shirt, despite not drinking red wine and not having stains on any other part of the tuxedo. On Monday, I'm supposed to return the tuxedo. Help? [more inside]
I recently moved cross country, and had to break my apartment lease 3 months early in order to do so. I gave my landlords a month and a half notice, and they immediately began showing my place. When the time came for me to turn in my keys, I told them the date of my departure and gave them my forwarding address, and in their reply (via email), they did not indicate that they had not leased my apartment yet (otherwise I would have left an additional check for the month of October). Today I received a bill from them for the remainder of the rent on the lease, plus additional cleaning fees that were not subtracted from my deposit. The bill indicates that my deposit has been forfeited as well. I'm finding the whole thing a bit fishy though, because Craigslist does not indicate that my apartment is for rent (that's how I found the place initially), and they waited to SNAIL MAIL this bill until October 11th, when the rent was due on October 5th (they also have my email and phone number). As it stands, if I am on the hook, I will have to call them regardless, because a mailed check will not make it back to them by "within 7 days of the date of this notice (October 11th)". What can I do to address this situation? [more inside]
In Paris, we are looking for a recommendation for a 6 day apartment rental by owner or a hotel in the 6th arrondissement. We would like to pay a maximum of $200 Canadian per night. Though we are looking at the 6th, If you have a place to recommend in the 5th arrondissement, we would also be interested. if you can add a few details about the place, that would be appreciated.
I will be moving to Douglas, Arizona from across the country for work. It is a small city of 14,000 people. I want to rent a house, but (at least online) there appears to be very few rental options. Zillows and Trulia have only three rental listings for the whole city. Three rental listings for 14k people seems way too low to me, which makes me wonder if people there typically just don't advertise their rental properties on those sites. Am I right?
My landlord and I have a previously discussed arrangement where if I am able to save him a call to a handyman by dealing with an issue myself, I can ask for "whatever's fair" off of rent. Yesterday, a visit by the utility company took up a large part of my day. Not sure if I should ask for money and if so, how much, and how to phrase. [more inside]
I'm taking a temporary job near Duxbury, MA. I'll be working there for 3 months, potentially renewing for another 3 months. I'm starting next week. I really don't need anything more than a place to sleep, but I'm having a hard time coming up with something temporary and affordable <=$1000 a month. [more inside]

We rented a house in Skokie, and the landlord used an office-supply-store-pre-printed lease form for the city. It included a copy of the Chicago RLTO as part of the form. Understanding that YANML, does this incorporate the requirements of the RLTO into the terms of the lease? If so, he'd be required to submit receipts meet deadlines for the return of the deposit. Or is he only bound by State Law (which for a single-family home, seems to require bupkus). He only returned half of our security deposit. Is it worth fighting for the other half ($600)? If I accept and deposit the $600 he sent, am I hurting my chances of getting the rest? [more inside]
There is a door between my apartment and my landlords' garage. On the garage side, the cracks around the door are taped over with some sort of tape, and there is a big piece of styrofoam which blocks noise reasonably well. There is a nice air exchanger system in the apartment. But right next to this door is a bathroom which is a bit of an air circulation dead-end, and still smells a bit exhaust-y on occasion. What additional non-permanent steps can I take, affecting my side of the door, to further seal it off? [more inside]

Bronx WoodchipperFilter: we have a ~ 24ft x 12ft x 7ft mess of branches in our backyard after a massive clean-up. My current rental house is too small, so I'm looking for a larger house or apartment to rent when my lease is up next month. I have excellent income and strong credit and good references, with roots in the area. I'm friendly and professional. But I have a feeling that potential landlords may be refusing to rent to me because they suspect I am pregnant. (I am not.) [more inside]
A good friend owns an underwater house in a suburb of Las Vegas. Payments are current and house is in good shape. The friend reported that a similar home in the development recently sold for several thousand (something like $50-80k) less than his current mortgage. If I can provide referrals to knowledgeable local people so he can get good, sensible information on his options, that would be a huge help. [more inside]
For someone (and his accompanying elderly mother) who is in search of a good apartment rental in Toronto, what are the best online/offline options to go about it (apart from hiring a real estate agent)? It is difficult for him to roam about the streets looking for posters (although I've read that this is probably the best way to find good deals) because he needs to find it before he arrives. It can be as small as a studio apartment, but it is important that the neighborhood is safe and that the price is somewhat cheap. It is also important that the flat is comfortable for the elderly mother (proximity to subway stations, bus stations, hospitals, stores, ...) since the son will be spending most of his time at work. [NYC Renting] YANML: New management company/owner is demanding a special "move out" deposit that wasn't there when I moved in. There are very little details why this deposit is necessary and what criteria they use to decide whether or not to keep it. Is this right? [more inside]
My partner and I have just moved into a new rental in South Australia. It has a double garage with electric roller doors on the front. We want to use this space for storage and the landlord has agreed to let us enclose the rear and the open side (between the side fence and the roof). Originally I was thinking cafe blinds, but now I'm wondering if that will be too costly. We are getting a quote next week. If it turns out to be over our budget, which is not really set but probably around the $1,000 mark, what else could work to enclose the garage? Thanks.

We won't be using our apartment for a few weeks and it would be great to earn a few bucks on it, but this is a 'nice if it happens' thing so I am looking for the single listing site which jointly maximizes ease of use and likelihood of rental. I would say no Craigslist as I would like some sort of middleman and perhaps rudimentary authentication. I have never used these services from either side, so feel free to mention any protips. If it matters, this is in New York City. Comparable apartments are asking $400+ / night (no idea if they are getting it, obviously).
This will take a bit of time as I will go into some details but bear with me please.I have seen the earlier threads but the kinda of questions I had are, sort of, very different. I am in early 30's and have just moved to NYC. I am by myself now and expect my wife to join me after December. Currently, am in a hotel provided by my employer and can have this for a month more. My office is in mid-town manhattan (near grand central) and one client whom I would be visiting often is in long island city. I plan to use subway extensively for my travel. So, I have started my house hunting now. Q1: Is this the right time or am I too late and I should beg my employer to give me couple of more weeks? [more inside]

I have started searching for potential apartments almost two months ahead of time to get a feel for size / rent for places in the neighborhood I like. I have quickly learned it's a very popular place to live, and I could use advice on etiquette when going through this process. I feel like it's almost like a job interview. Below is a scenario I encountered and if it doesn't work out, then what can I learn from it? Any owner/landlord input would be greatly appreciated! [more inside]

I'm trying to arrange private student accommodation for next year in a smallish university town in the UK, as part of a group of four students. The recycling dumpster shared by about 30 people in an apartment complex fills up to the top and overflows the second or third day after it is emptied. It's been this way for a few months now, after some changes in the tenant count and removal of one dumpster. Landlord says people need to use the recycling dumpster space more efficiently, refusing to get more recycling space and passing on overflow pickup costs in building fees. How can I fix this problem? I am doing a fundraising event tomorrow evening at Reza's Restaurant in the River North neighborhood of Chicago, in a second floor private room. I was just informed that two guests who use motorized wheelchairs are coming. When I called Reza's to double check the capacity of their lift, they said it cannot accommodate the weight of motorized chairs. Legality and ADA-compliance aside, I want to make sure that all of my guests can get to the event. Where can I rent either a ramp (because the restaurant does not have one of their own) or a light, airport-style wheelchair TOMORROW?

Husband and I are seeking a rental home. We found a nice house and the landlord has invited us to apply. Last time we applied for rental the property manager had us do a credit/background check via an online service. This new landlord gave us a paper form asking for SSN, DOB, our checking and savings account numbers, employment history, and other info. The landlord is an older person with a couple investment properties. I'm sure this is not a scam, but I am reluctant to hand all my ID and bank numbers to a stranger. Advice? Anyone know a simple, reputable online background checking service that I can suggest to this landlord? We would pay the fee. My goal is to make the landlord comfortable so we can lease the house. The Seattle rental market is very tight. This landlord has his pick of many worthy applicants. We have excellent credit, references, etc.
Hi everyone I'm relocating for the first time ever out of the family home. Should I start should start house hunting now *for a rental) while I'm away, or wait till I get there (I'm very happy to hostel it for a bit, as I don't know of anyone in the area and I'm a bit funny about couchsurfing). Thanks!
We rent the top floor of an old boarding house in Toronto and have access to a rooftop patio. Because we rent, drilling and installing motion activated lights or anything that would permanently alter the unit is a no-go. Any chemical or non-permanent solutions would be greatly appreciated.

I may be on the lookout for a new residence soon, and I'm open to alternatives to the usual apartment/house rental. In particular, living in an RV or camper trailer parked on the street outside of a friend's house (or in their driveway if long-term parking on the street is illegal) seems doable. And fun. And possible (I asked). What's it like? [more inside]
