Asking for a friend- Who is responsible for the cost of repairs after a house fire? I am renting the house. I have renters insurance. The fire report said no negligence on my part. I'm located in California.

I know that a holding deposit prevents the landlord from renting the unit to anyone else. What does it guarantee in the case that the tenant currently living in the unit decides to stay? (California)

Conflicting problems with both non-closing windows and likely lead paint in a Los Angeles rental. Maintenance plan to grind them all down later this week and I'm pregnant and worried about the dust. I would deeply appreciate some advice on how this might play out and how to handle it (yes, not legal advice) especially advice from those who know about California and LA rental issues.

I'm in the hunt for some new roommates in this house, and I'd like suggestions on how best to divvy up rent based on bedroom size and amenities. Also, how should I go about listing the rooms for rent here in central Los Angeles?

I moved into a house with some friends in Los Angeles California, we all split the deposit (shared was $700 each), things got weird and I moved out with the person moving into my room agreeing to pay my share of the deposit. That was a year ago and promises of "in the fall" have now gone silent. What do I do now?

I am planning a trip to California late July with a friend and I wouldn't mind renting transportation to get around. Would it be feasible / possible to rent some kind of hippie van and sleep in it along the coast?

Where are the best neighborhoods in the Santa Barbara area for two 20-something professionals? My boyfriend will be working in Goleta starting in June and we're looking for a 1BR apartment preferably near stuff like grocery shopping, cafes/restaurants, a public library, and running/walking paths.

I am trying to end my tenancy in a month-to-month lease in Los Angeles, but the landlord says that submitting a 30-day-notice won't absolve me of any future responsibility if my roommate stays in the apartment. Please hope me!

Advice on apt/househunting in the inland empire in general also requested. General advice about Cal Poly and the Pomona/Claremont area sought too.

The About.com page says that golf cart rentals on Catalina Island go for about $30 plus an hour. Is this right? So a couple hour tour of the botanical gardens and Avalon would cost me over $100? For some reason this seems a little high to me. I remember when I was a kid it was about $25 for the afternoon, but that was years ago. Anyone been to Avalon recently who can remember the rate?
