About to move into a huge (and expensive) house with a couple of friends when we broke up and she started going out with another housemate. I moved out even before I moved in. Can I recover any rent that I've spent on this place?

Is it possible for a 'normal person' to let a house without doing all of the usual landlord work? We want to keep a house in the family but don't want the responsibility of finding tenants, contacting a plumber, collecting rent and so on.

Does anyone know where to rent a high quality student cello short term in NYC? Ideally, I'd like something hand crafted and valued at 10 - 20 k, but if need be I'll go lower end. Looking for a bow, too. Thanks!

ApartmentFilter: I am currently leasing an apartment month-to-month (continuation of a twelve-month lease which ended in August 2007) and I told my landlord today that I intend to move out around May 18 of this year. He informed me that I would have to pay for the whole month of May instead of prorating the rent because "that's the way rent's done." Is this true?

Complicated, messy NYC roommate/landlord question: 4 roommates share a 3 bedroom converted into 4 (with permission). One roommate signed a lease for a new building without getting permission from current building to transfer name on lease to new roommate. Said old roommate now refuses to pay six months of rent (remainder of lease). Much, much more inside.

Ay! Help! Does a lease automatically renew if you can't prove you mailed the non-renewal? My landlord is now acting like they didn't recieve my non-renewal. I have already moved out (today) and it would make NO sense for me to move back in for the month. Is there anything I can do to avoid owing the rent for the month?

I own a coop apartment in New Jersey. They don't allow any subletting at all. Is there any way to get around that? Just doing it and hoping I get away with it isn't an option because I have nosy neighbors who would probably rat me out.

I live in a big apartment complex and the landlord sends me a letter 1.5 months before my lease is up with the rent increase. So I will be notified of the new rent on January 16 and no earlier. However, I have to give 30 days notice, and so only have about 2 weeks where I know my new rent and can find a new place. How do other renters deal with such a small window of time?

A window in our apartment was broken by the previous tenants. When my roommates and I moved in this summer, our landlord told us that he'd get it fixed within 6-8 weeks. Winter's here, it still hasn't been fixed and it's causing our utilities to skyrocket. I know YANAL, but we need a bit of legal advice...

The building we're living in has been sold to a management company who just put out notices while we were on vacation. The notice is dated 12/4 and it states that rent payment must be in the form of cash, money order, or bank check. Their office hours are during the same hours we are at work mon-fri, 9-5. Payment can be dropped in their box or mailed to their office. They state payments received after the 5th of the month (due the 1st) will incur a 20% penalty. I'm wondering what the tenants rights are. Can they really NOT accept personal checks?!!
