Landlord Discovered Error in Billing, Now We Owe 10 Months of Parking Fees

The management company at our apartment building just discovered that they had not been charging us for parking 10 months into our lease. We had been paying the rent amount and the parking amount for the first two months, but kept getting overpayment notices telling us to reduce our monthly payment, so I thought our number was in error. Now they want all 10 months paid back though they admit the error was on their end. Are we liable for the back fees even though we were told by them to lower our monthly payment? This is in Washington, DC.

Breakups Suck

After some soul-searching, I've decided I need to break up with my live-in boyfriend. Our lease is up in August, and I'm worried about how to deal with living together when we're no longer "together" while we're looking for new apartments. I'm sure many of you have gone through this, so any anecdotes or advice would be helpful. [more inside]

Where Can I Rent for No More Than $1000/Month and Go Carless?

OK, big broadbrush question. I'm 60, retired, with an annual income of $50,000. It's time for me to move. But, where? I'm looking for a place where I can rent for no more than $1000 per month, don't need a car, and that's not bereft of reasons to be there. Climate matters. I.e., sun is good, ice is bad. Is this possible in the U.S.?

We rent -- our place is being sold at a short sale. What do we do?

Our condo in California is being sold at a short sale. We lived in the house for two years, our landlord loves us, but he has another house and it sounds like he's "underwater" on both houses. We've offered to buy the place, but everything I've read here and elsewhere on the interwebs make short sales sound like a tremendous nightmare. We really don't want to move. What are our rights, what should our strategy be? We've never owned a house before - help! [more inside]

How feasible is renting out a condo while living in another city?

I am thinking about buying a specific apartment (condo) in Brooklyn, NY. For this question, let's assume that this apartment is a smart investment / better than renting, financially. While I don't have plans to leave New York in the immediate future, I'm not 100% committed to staying here, either. So my question is about contingencies: if I got this apartment, then in a few years needed to move to a different city, how much pain would I be bringing upon myself to keep the apartment and rent it out? Privacy, woman!

My apartment manager has been coming into my unit to show it unannounced several times now, after I've submitted my 30 day move-out notice. I have less than a week left at the building - besides it being an inconvenience (and just seriously annoying on a personal level), is there any point to complaining at this time? [more inside]

Sell Or Rent Out My Small House

I Can't Decide: I have 24 hours to decide whether to sell my a very small house in a very small town or to rent it out. I am 1200 miles away but had planned to return and have some fun with my friends then rent it out and come back down here. However, a realtor called and said there are people who would buy it with cash and no inspections (it would never pass conventional inspection) at nice profit. [more inside]

International researcher housing woes and tenant rights

Question: I'm from the UK temporarily working and living in a university city in Ontario, Canada for the 2009/2010 academic year. Due to the fact that I work from home a lot and have to transfer large files (via Skype/DropBox/FTP) from Canada to my labmates overseas, my landlady's internet usage has gone up since I've become a tenant. I think she's using Rogers Express or Extreme Plan. If I'm understanding things correctly, according to the Ontario Landlord/Tenant Act, Canadian landlords can't increase a rent until 12 months after a tenancy has started. What do I do? [more inside]

Rental discrimination/morality

I'm a landlord for a owner-occupied 4-unit bldg. I know I can't discriminate, with respect to tenant selection, regarding "family status", but am I free to prefer a single-occupancy renter to a family? My motivation is mostly remunerative -- included in rent are: water, hot water, and heat, and so a single renter is cheaper for me than a family of three with respect to those utilities. Is my preference for 1 vs. 3 rentors actionable discrimination? (Call me a miser if you like, but I'm under rent control, and I need to watch my costs, since it is near impossible to pass inflationary costs on to tenants.)

breaking a lease in new york for job-related reasons

My friend was laid off several months ago in NY and can no longer afford her lease. I've heard that for job-related reasons (such as moving for a new job) that you can break a lease legally, does anyone know about this? What have the many others who must have found themselves in this situation done? Clearly its not so easy to find someone else to take over your lease as a lot of people have lost their jobs and can't afford a lease. Please help us!! Thanks!
