Sticky Renting Situation Filter: I just moved into a house that my girlfriend and two other friends have been renting from my girlfriends mother for about 2 years now. Now my girlfriends uncles want to increase the rent (oral lease) pretty heavily and planned to do so before they even knew I was moving in. Do I use the law to protect our rights as tenants, or because it's my girlfriend's family do we just pick up and leave instead of fighting it? [more inside]

Fake landlords

My friend, renting a room in a house, has found that the people he was renting from didn't actually own the house. He came home to find an eviction notice on his door and the locks changed. The fake landlords have moved all of their stuff out, changed their phone number, and are gone without a trace. Now my friend can't get to his stuff. [more inside]

Help me stay out of debtor's prison!

For the past 6 years, I have lived in an expensive NYC apartment (that I love), sharing the rent with my boyfriend -- but I can't carry alone since my relationship has ended. I was rocked by the breakup, didn't immediately move and managed to miss 4 months of rent as I struggled to figure out what to do. I have now found a new, affordable place and am feeling stronger. My current landlord is ok with releasing me from the lease, holds a month security, but the 4 open months add up to a lot -- more than I can pay AND move. I have emailed with my current landlord and said as much, asking what we can work out but I'm losing a lot of sleep/am a wreck over this as I wait to hear back. The landlord is decent and typically ok working with me on things -- but it's a lot of money. What scenarios might play out here? By the way, I don't have the option of tapping savings, borrowing money or going to the ex for help.

Landlord Discovered Error in Billing, Now We Owe 10 Months of Parking Fees

The management company at our apartment building just discovered that they had not been charging us for parking 10 months into our lease. We had been paying the rent amount and the parking amount for the first two months, but kept getting overpayment notices telling us to reduce our monthly payment, so I thought our number was in error. Now they want all 10 months paid back though they admit the error was on their end. Are we liable for the back fees even though we were told by them to lower our monthly payment? This is in Washington, DC.

Where Can I Rent for No More Than $1000/Month and Go Carless?

OK, big broadbrush question. I'm 60, retired, with an annual income of $50,000. It's time for me to move. But, where? I'm looking for a place where I can rent for no more than $1000 per month, don't need a car, and that's not bereft of reasons to be there. Climate matters. I.e., sun is good, ice is bad. Is this possible in the U.S.?

We rent -- our place is being sold at a short sale. What do we do?

Our condo in California is being sold at a short sale. We lived in the house for two years, our landlord loves us, but he has another house and it sounds like he's "underwater" on both houses. We've offered to buy the place, but everything I've read here and elsewhere on the interwebs make short sales sound like a tremendous nightmare. We really don't want to move. What are our rights, what should our strategy be? We've never owned a house before - help! [more inside]

How feasible is renting out a condo while living in another city?

I am thinking about buying a specific apartment (condo) in Brooklyn, NY. For this question, let's assume that this apartment is a smart investment / better than renting, financially. While I don't have plans to leave New York in the immediate future, I'm not 100% committed to staying here, either. So my question is about contingencies: if I got this apartment, then in a few years needed to move to a different city, how much pain would I be bringing upon myself to keep the apartment and rent it out? Sell Or Rent Out My Small House

I Can't Decide: I have 24 hours to decide whether to sell my a very small house in a very small town or to rent it out. I am 1200 miles away but had planned to return and have some fun with my friends then rent it out and come back down here. International researcher housing woes and tenant rights

Question: I'm from the UK temporarily working and living in a university city in Ontario, Canada for the 2009/2010 academic year. Due to the fact that I work from home a lot and have to transfer large files (via Skype/DropBox/FTP) from Canada to my labmates overseas, my landlady's internet usage has gone up since I've become a tenant. I think she's using Rogers Express or Extreme Plan. If I'm understanding things correctly, according to the Ontario Landlord/Tenant Act, Canadian landlords can't increase a rent until 12 months after a tenancy has started. What do I do? [more inside]
