I've been living in a month-to-month, no-lease sublet in Manhattan since January. I just found out that' it's a NYCHA rent-controlled apartment, and i'm paying way more than my 'share' of the monthly rent (also, i'm pretty sure subletting a rent-controlled apartment is illegal.) Clearly i'm going to be moving out ASAP. What else should I do? Do I have grounds for financial recoupment?

My roommate's girlfriend moved into our three bedroom apartment and we're about to re-sign the lease. I think we should take the new person into account and re-distribute the rent to accommodate for a fourth roommate, but what is the most fair way to do this?

I currently live in Center City, Philadelphia in a 700 sq. ft. apartment that costs me $1300 / mo without parking. I'm getting married in the spring and I'm looking to move out of the city to the suburbs. I'd like to find a reasonably priced one-bedroom place with parking and access to public transportation. What areas or apartments outside the city do you recommend?

Brooklyn apartment filter: I'm looking for a 1 bedroom apartment in Borough Park/Kensington. I'm checking the regular places: Craigslist, classified ads, etc. Where else should I check? Are there any good brokers in the area? Is there anyone or any place that I should definitely avoid?

My friend, renting a room in a house, has found that the people he was renting from didn't actually own the house. He came home to find an eviction notice on his door and the locks changed. The fake landlords have moved all of their stuff out, changed their phone number, and are gone without a trace. Now my friend can't get to his stuff.

I recently applied for an apartment that I saw through a realtor. Then I met with the landlord and they wanted to negotiate the price up. Is this reasonable or not?

MovingFilter: My girlfriend and I have a trip to Austin planned next week to find an apartment for our upcoming move there. Do you think it would be possible to find a place in the 4 days we'll be there, or is that a pipe dream?

[New York City apartment filter] So my future roommate and I found a place we thought was perfect. We're thisclose to signing the lease. And then a search with HPD turns up 96 open violations in the building. How concerned should I be?

NYCaptFilter: I'm moving to NYC (yay!) and sorry, but I'm going to drive you all nuts with questions for the next few weeks. #1: Best way to find an apartment? I know the city, but would like tips on finding a good place. Broker? Classified listings? Pitfalls to avoid? How do I find something rent stabilized? Any opinion about rentdirect.com? I promise to host a meetup when I get settled.

TenantFilter: So I gave permission for the building manager to let a contractor into my apartment to do some fix up work. Not only does she not let him in personally, which is what I thought I okayed, but she leaves the key to another tenant to pass on to the contractor when he shows up. Am I overreacting in thinking that was way out of line? How do I go about responding to something like this?
