Do I qualify for an apartment that has income restrictions?

There's a couple of apartment complexes that I've been looking at, but they're income restricted - you have to be making less than $36,960 for one person to qualify. I don't know if I qualify, even though my income is lower than that, because I'd also be going to school part time at a local community college for the next year or so. Here's an example of an apartment complex that I'd like to check out: Addison on Fourth. [more inside]

Great places to rent for a young person in NYC

22 years old here and I work full time and study part time and live on my own currently. I really really want to move out of my current place. I'm supposed to be getting an increase in pay soon and as such I'm wondering what are some good parts of the city (NYC here) that have affordable rent that doesn't eat a crazy chunk of income. Assume that my maximum rent is $1200 (but I would rather go a bit less - I'm looking at value over price, but not some run down place or a place in the projects.)

Being overcharged in an illegal sublet in a rent-controlled apartment. No lease. What do?

I've been living in a month-to-month, no-lease sublet in Manhattan since January. I just found out that' it's a NYCHA rent-controlled apartment, and i'm paying way more than my 'share' of the monthly rent (also, i'm pretty sure subletting a rent-controlled apartment is illegal.) Clearly i'm going to be moving out ASAP. What else should I do? Do I have grounds for financial recoupment? [more inside]

Fake landlords

My friend, renting a room in a house, has found that the people he was renting from didn't actually own the house. He came home to find an eviction notice on his door and the locks changed. The fake landlords have moved all of their stuff out, changed their phone number, and are gone without a trace. Now my friend can't get to his stuff. [more inside]

Was my landlord out of line to pass my key to another tenant?

TenantFilter: So I gave permission for the building manager to let a contractor into my apartment to do some fix up work. Not only does she not let him in personally, which is what I thought I okayed, but she leaves the key to another tenant to pass on to the contractor when he shows up. Am I overreacting in thinking that was way out of line? How do I go about responding to something like this? [more inside]
