Keeping on top of the snowstorm -- does it really matter?

I am in the snowy state of Massachusetts and avoiding my next foray out to shovel. Plus, spouse and I slightly disagree on how often we really need to go out and shovel. Does it really save time to shovel every few hours throughout the storm? I have a suspicion that it doesn't really save time, and that we be just as fine waiting until the end of the snowstorm -- is there a way to think this through mathematically to find a good answer?

Removal/rescue of bird's nest under the eaves of my back patio

I'm not sure how to attach a picture of if I can. Our association is saying it's not their responsibility to remove it. I don't know if the bird/eggs in the nest are dead or alive. The big bird hovering over the nest hasn't moved in a week. There are daily bird droppings directly under the nest on our back patio. I'm an animal lover. I don't want those birds/eggs killed. Who can I call in Orange County, California to help me with me with this? I did a Google search but couldn't find anything for this particular situation. Any ideas? Thanks much. Sincerely, htm

Lock it down!

Maintenance workers used my outside water spigot to fill up the gargantuan tanks on their trucks. No surprise, my water bill sky rocketed. I bought and installed a spigot lock which worked like a charm for about a year. Now, with warm weather and the need to water fast approaching, I can't get the damn thing off! [more inside]

How to get a stain out of a vintage dress?

I am the proud new owner of this vintage picnic-checked pink gingham maxi dress, which I picked up for a song! Unfortunately, the dress has a stain on the bust that I need to remove (see the fifth picture in the link), and I am looking for advice about the best method(s) to try without ruining the dress. The dress is missing a tag indicating fabric, and the brand label has been cut out of it. I don't know much about the dress or the stain, but here are a few things I do know: [more inside]

How to fix large patches of scar tissue?

I have large patches of raised scars and broken blood vessels across huge areas of my body. (I'm an adult in my twenties.) None of this was ever self-inflicted, nor desired in any way at any time. Can any of this be fixed medically/surgically if I save up the money? What about the purple/red marks crisscrossing my flesh? I know that laser surgery is possible for single scars, and to remove tattoos, but as for improving skin quality, I have no idea. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I Am Sooooo Stuck On You

Went out in the woods yesterday in my new Patagonia fleece jacket. Noticed the dog was covered with tiny black burrs and then noticed I was covered with them too. The jacket is covered with masses of them and they are impossible to pull off as they are clumped together. Duct tape and packing tape do not work. Help me to be wear my new jacket again. I'm too lazy to shave every day....Solutions?

We can put a man on the moon. We can turn a woman into a man and a man into a woman. We can create computers that are smarter than us. We know what the middle of the earth looks like...And so on and so on and so on...... We are a pretty much technology advanced race of humans. How close are we to inventing a 'Nair' like product for the head? I'm bald and a bit lazy and tired of the routine of shaving my head 3x a week to maintain an appearance that isn't so 'gruff'. My wife likes me smooth! Every hair removal product I read of is not recommended for the head, because our skin on top is too thin and the hair removal chemicals could do more damage then good. So anyway, is there a solution on the horizon? Any miracle head hair removal gel, cream, mist coming out soon? Life must be pretty good if this is what concerns me at the moment...... Humor me?

please help: might I have lost everything I own?

I dropped off all my possessions (pretty much everything I own) in boxes at a local storage facility in the UK (in awful circumstances - details below) and failed to get a receipt, only a verbal agreement that they would do my paperwork by email, and deliver my boxes in a month's time. I then had to leave the country. Four weeks later, I've yet to receive any invoice or confirmation. I've called and emailed several times and have been told in a genial but rather brusque way that they will get in touch, but so far no email. I'm heading back to the UK soon and want to get my boxes delivered this weekend. Still no invoice or receipt. I am FREAKING OUT that they are being so flaky. I am having panicky visions of them losing or selling all my things, and me showing up in the UK with basically the clothes on my back and nothing else. Have I made a terrible mistake? Is there anything I can do? Apologies in advance for long freaking-out-ness below the jump. [more inside]

Removal of tie rod....err, thyroid. Your experience, if you please.

I've been diagnosed with a multi-noidal non-malignant thyroid. The beast is about 2X normal size = goiter (I divert attention from it with my sparkling personality and feminine loveliness). After 20 years of the goiter with normal hormone levels, it has gone into high-gear with excessive production. I've had the scan and ultrasound, biopsy, blood tests, yada yada. Two wonderful endocrinologists have separately told me, "just get the damned thing out!" I've visited their choice of surgeon and feel confident of his skills. I would appreciate your post-surgery experience: how soon after surgery did you get your replacement hormone? recovery time? any weight gain or loss? how long until you were back to normal? any advice? Thanks very much for your time.

Sticker residue on my French Dressmaker's form...

We received this dressmaker's dummy from our client with old sticker residue on her. Too many items to shoot to just Photoshop the spot out, so I'm desperate for a permanent solution- The obvious point here is I can't throw her into the washing machine as she's wooden directly under the fabric that needs cleaning. Already tried a small bit of Goo Gone, with a clean white cloth, but I think it may just be moving the gunk around and not removing the residue as I'd hoped. I read about lighter fluid (butane), WD-40 and some others, but am obviously hesitant to do anything that may permanently discolor this spot even more. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Remove my knob!

I'm trying to replace my exterior locking door knob, but I cannot get one 'half' off. There is a faceplate covering the screws on one side (the other side). I've tried looking for slots and notches based on google searching, but there is nothing, except some indentations that have no holes or anything that gives. I've used this hook-type item that comes with the new lock, but no idea how it works. Here's as good as pic I can get. It's a Weiser lock from late 90s probably.

How do I remove permanent marker from my car window?

Someone vandalized my car, damaging my front bumper and writing obscenities on my car window with permanent marker. Because the damage is in two places on the car, my insurance company says it has to be two separate claims, and therefore two deductibles. I can't afford that, so I'm making a claim for the bumper, but I'll have to take care of the window myself. any suggestion on what will take off the permanent marker without damaging the window. It's the passenger side window, not the windshield if that matters.

Help me save this dress I plan to ruin!

I bought a pretty white satin dress for halloween. Part of my costume is that I have to put fake blood all over it, since I'm going as Carrie. However, I'm starting to get really sad that I am going to ruin this dress, as I like the idea of wearing it for other things too. Is there any recipe for fake blood I can use that will wash out easily. Or is there any way I can rescue the dress afterwards? I was planning on making my fake blood with corn syrup and red/green food coloring.
