How to let people watch a talk, ask the speaker a question, and later discuss the talk with other "attendees", without attending in person unless they want to? What tech would be used, how, to best make this happen? (We need to foster community without requiring travel.) [more inside]

My parents love to look at and show off stuff from their 200+GB photo collection on the big TV in the living room. They currently use a last-gen AppleTV which works fairly well once you actually get into the folders list, but getting there sometimes takes 20-30 minutes with just the "Loading" spinning circle. Additionally, there is no way to zoom in and pan around on a photo, a feature they would love to have. Would the new Apple TV improve things? [more inside]
We have a Liftmaster 2000sdr and while the opener itself works fine, neither of our wireless remotes can get a response anymore. [more inside]

Brainstorming assistance please! If you live in a small town (or work remotely), what do you do? What skills are best for keeping oneself reasonably employed outside of a big city? We're likely moving to my husbands small home town in the next couple years, and if I'm going to reskill I should probably start soon. Lots of cafes and bookstores, but I'm a terrible waitress and need to make more than a retail clerk. Have been tracking job ads for the area, but thought Metafilter might have some outside-the-box suggestions. Thanks!
Hi Hivemind, so I got a Google chromebase (like a computer, only internet) in the bedroom now to watch tv. is there a remote I can buy? I thought I read that people were using their chromebase as an alarm clock, so I figure there must be a remoter control out there, so that I can watch the computer from bed. thanks!

And by Shining type cases, let me say that English ghosts and psychic kids are of course a bonus but in no way necessary. What I'm getting as is I'm trying to do some research on cases of murder or near murder brought on by isolation. Where can I find examples of dark deeds brought on - or exacerbated by - people being stuck somewhere far away from others?

I have a Windows 7 computer A in city X that I live in and have full access to. I need to set up TV screens (that could be connected to computers) in city Y and city Z, and then ensure that all of the TV screens display the same thing that's on computer A's monitor(s). The screen(s) will be active every single day (it's an informational panel). How do I best do this? Bonus: can the solution work with multiple monitors?
From a description of a web company: "Everyone works from their own home or office, and we’re spread out all over the world — California, Texas, New York, Canada, Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Iceland, Bulgaria, Australia, and more." I know lots of development companies operate like this, and I'm intrigued, but I don't know how it works, especially the aspect of taxation, citizenship, etc. [more inside]

I've visited San Francisco several times over the last year, and I think the Bay Area is where I'm supposed to be. Every time I go there, I feel like I'm home. Every time I come back to Boston, I feel miserable. So it's time to start planning a move. Soon. [more inside]

I'm visiting the Bay Area next week, and plan to work remotely from Sausalito. Where in Sausalito or the surrounding areas can I plant myself with my laptop, grab some wifi and VPN in to work for 4-6 hours without getting booted out? I'm more than happy to pay for food and beverages while I'm there. Someplace overlooking the water would be awesome, but not required. My point of origin with be on the Bridgeway, near Molly Stone's and the Post Office. I may or may not have a car, but I'm happy to bus it as far as Tiburon for the right place. Thanks!!
Dryers use electricity when plugged in, even when they're turned off. In our old house, I could reach the plug; in this house, I can't. Is there a money-saving solution that doesn't involve re-wiring or the electrical box? In the U.S., so dryer has a 220 plug. (Dryer isn't broken - asking about a switch between wall and dryer.) I have an Airport Express base station - the older one not new (around 2009) version. Recently got a new iMac with with latest version of OSx and no longer see the the option under the sound button (top right corner of screen) to choose to either play with local speakers or speakers (or both) associated Airport Express base. When I go to settings - sound - output, I can see the the local speakers and the Airport Express but it says the selected device (Express) has no output controls. It used to be an option with any playback on any application. How to remedy? I can use my iphone (using iOS 6 not 7) to play on the airport express speakers. The only thing that seems to pickup the base is Itunes but other programs are not picking it up and I use Pandora, Spotify, Rhapsody, etc.. If I manually go in under the settings - sound - output I can click on Airport Express and it will play but not both sets of speakers. We like whole house music.

I work at home and, since I moved from NYC to the West Coast, I've simply had Verizon remote-call-forward my number to make the move as seamless as possible. The problem is the cost, around $70.00 per month. Does anyone know of a less expensive way to remote-call-forward? Thanks in advance!
My company's LAN is fast and reliable, except for the connection to one building. Inside that building is an unattended WinXP-Pro system running basically one program 24/7, that we need to be able to monitor. Typically, we only need to interact with the computer >1% of the time, but we need to be able to make sure the software up and running, without problems, all the time. [more inside]
I just purchased an underpowered computer to experiment further with remote desktops. Ideally I'd like to be able to use a remote desktop technology to stream HD video from the remote server, play a game on the client that's rendered on the more powerful server, and to have a local user work on the remote serving computer while another account on the server is being accessed remotely by the thin client.
