Straightforward way to reduce hardwood floor shine?

My very dark strand woven bamboo hardwood floors have a semi-glossy finish. Even after they've been freshly mopped, every speck of dust is visible and they'll look dirty the minute someone – wearing socks fresh out of the laundry, even – walks across the room. Is there any way I can change their finish to matte? [more inside]

Advice on radiator upgrades...

As part of a big upcoming pre-winter energy improvement and remodeling at Chez McMurphy (sprayfoaming, new windows, etc), we're going to have to remove the 1920s era cast iron radiators. I'd like to replace them with more modern efficient "european style" flat panels. (My first option, sandblasting and refurbishing them turns out to be considerably more expensive.) A couple of questions though.... [more inside]

Negotiating with contractor! Tips for bringing costs down?

I have just bought a home and want to remodel both bathrooms and paint interior before I move in. I got two bids and both were about the same. The companies both have good reviews on Angie's list and are the same size, so this makes me feel ok about the price estimated. That said, the price quoted is still a bit more than what I expected so I am wondering what suggestions people have for managing and bringing down costs. [more inside]

Stage this house!

We've decided to move. We currently live in Omaha, NE and are considering moving to Cedar Rapids, IA, where I grew up, because greatschools.org indicates that the schools there kick ass compared to Omaha and vicinity. (Our kids are 3 and 1, so we've got time, but you know... no time like the present.) We're still a little conflicted about whether to go to CR or not, but I'll save that question for next week. This week's question IS: what should we do to our house to get it ready to sell? [more inside]

Where to see bathroom vanities?

Is there a place where I can see many bathroom vanities on display? I need to buy a bathroom vanity and it is something I need to see in real life not just on a website as color and quality can look different up close. Places like Home Depot and Lowes only display a few and a search for "bathroom showroom" found contractor/decorator storefronts where the main purpose is to sell $20,000 bathroom makeovers rather than to display products. Are these things people typically buy mail order without having seen them or am I looking in the wrong place?

Flowers in the Attic, without, you know, THAT.

We're finishing an attic to use as a living space. Said attic is ~400 sq ft and has sash windows and skylights, and Mr. desjardins is going to put white beadboard paneling around the walls. The floor is old, dark wood in bad shape, but we do not have time/money to sand/refinish. What colors should we paint the paneling and floor? The walls angle in dramatically so I don't want to feel claustrophobic. [more inside]
