We *must* replace our lower kitchen cabinets. The uppers are *ahem, previous owners* stained green. How do I match the unfinished lowers to the uppers? Is it possible with stain or am I forced to do a flat paint/black stain to cover the previous stain? Is there a cheaper route than Home Depot/Lowes? Is Habitat a practical option? I don't see cabinets on CL.

We're realizing that the only way our little family of three is going to ever own a place is if we buy something tiny - 900 square feet or less. I need some inspiration for a livable design though. [more inside]

Are there any books, magazines, or websites that might help the design-challenged pick colors during a complete kitchen remodel or new house construction? We'd like to be able to flip through pictures of various home interiors - most importantly the kitchen but also other rooms - to help us decide on the colors of our cabinets and floors. Google images hasn't been terribly useful.
Our old farmhouse was remodeled in the 50s and as a result, the living room is seriously something like 35 x 20 in some spots, while others are 'only' 15 feet wide. We moved here from a house that could fit IN our current living room. It's freaking me out. I'd really like to make the house, our living room especially, seem more cozy. What are some ideas or hacks to make this happen? I see lots of tips on how to make rooms seem bigger, but not so many to make the walls feel like they're closing in on you.
I did a kitchen remodel and the only person I wanted to use was my plumber rather than the contractors because my plumber knows my house and situation pretty well. [more inside]

I need some help planning the kitchen remodel in my 1925 bungalow. Trying to keep the budget in the $10000 to 15000 range. I am fortunate that underneath the very worn vinyl floors is maple hardwood that is original to the house. The plan is to hopefully restore that. But do I keep the cabinets in their (rather dated) oak state or should I paint the cabinets? [more inside]

I'm remodeling my kitchen and have had an island built that is 2-level. The main counter is granite and the second 'bar' level for people to hang out at on bar stools is as yet undefined. I'm looking for some advice about what kind of surface I can put on the second level. I'm very interested in wood and was thinking 'live edge'. It would be about 24" x 72". Is this something best purchased from a supplier or is it a moderately DIY project from a tree cut by a tree service? Difficult to maintain? Easy enough to find? Suppliers north of Boston? Thanks!
How can/should I best support a 90" span of countertop, in a room where we want to do sewing, crafts, and schoolwork? [more inside]
Mr G and I are considering removing the wood-burning stove that inhabits our fireplace. I mean, we want to convert the thing back to a regular fireplace. The first step in attempting to beautify the whole ugly mess. We rarely have a fire. [more inside]
My existing claw foot tub doesn't fill deep enough. I would like to replace it with a deep soaking tub, of course for the best value possible. Give me your ideas please. [more inside]
My husband and I just bought a house in a great neighborhood, and it has a wonderful interior. But the exterior looks like this, except with a completely flat roof (we live in Arizona). It is made of concrete block in the shape of Phoenix brick (a long thin kind of bricks popular around here). The concrete is painted white, with paint that is now peeling. We have talked about doing a roof-over with elevated pitch and spanish tiles, and/or about building a facade but have no ideas on what it might look like. Googling has failed me. Can anyone link us to houses that are made like ours: (a concrete shoebox) that have been renovated to have great or much-improved curb appeal? Or any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.
I have a few household projects for which I'd like to mock-up some designs. Mostly pressingly a bathroom, and after that garage storage, landscape design, and other things. What is the best (free, or individual consumer-priced) software to get the job done? [more inside]
I bought a house last year that I've been continually remodeling & up next is the bathroom in the basement. However, the walls really confuse me. What are my options? Any suggestions? [more inside]
I am getting ready to do a kitchen remodel. I've been thinking about this since before we bought the house 6 years ago, and am finally ready to take the plunge. Give me your best kitchen ideas! [more inside]
Help us figure out how to cover up or replace this god awful kitchen floor. We just purchased a farmhouse that was renovated in the mid 50s. The mudroom and kitchen have 9" asphalt tiles that are all coming up (so not level), and on top of that, the prior owner used these rooms as a kennel for his incontinent daschund. [more inside]
The cabinets are already installed at floor level. Do we tile under the range and dishwasher or up to them? Also the dishwasher is already installed, but if we have to, we can take it out and tile under it. Opinions?

PLEASE tell me where to buy and how to get installed decent laminate (or other relatively inexpensive) countertops in Seattle. Home Depot has robbed us several times over in the kitchen remodel we're doing, and I can't deal with them any longer. I need another place to purchase countertops, and an installer (bonus if they're the same). I also would like to have this done in the next week or two, as I'm due to deliver a baby in three weeks. Of course, HD said this would all be done weeks ago, and it's not. Cabinets are being installed today and tomorrow. Help!
