Tax me

How do relocation expenses paid directly to a 3rd party work on your taxes (US)? We received the relocation expense breakdown from employer today and there is about $15,000 listed as w-2 reportable income, that was strictly the cost paid directly to the movers. Will we be paying taxes on that? Will our total income be our regular taxable income plus this $15000? Should we start having more taxes taken out of the paycheck to avoid any yucky surprises next year at tax time? Everything I find online talks about deductible expenses, but I don't see how that even applies to this situation because we weren't reimbursed for anything, the employer handled everything with the movers directly. We meet all the requirements for qualified moving expenses (time, distance and start of work), but again, don't know where that fits in. This will apply to the 2014 taxes, so we have plenty of time to get a better grasp of how it works. You are not my CPA or TA (we may get one, but I would still like to understand and prepare accordingly if we will be getting pounded at tax time).

What should I be looking for in a work relocation package to Australia?

Asking on behalf of a friend: May be transferred from the US to Australia shortly. What should I be looking for in a relocation package? Special snowflake details inside that may affect your answer! I have been transferred around the US a lot and thus know how to assess a relocation package when it's from point A to point B in the US - and, most importantly, I know when it's not enough and I need to hold out for more. I've never been transferred overseas and the only thing I know right now is that a relo package like the ones I get in the States would probably be insufficient. What should I be looking for? What Will It Cost to Work in Seattle?

I'm considering a possible tech job in the Seattle area (actually Kirkland). I live in Montreal. We're not planning to relocate to Seattle as yet -- it's a 9-12 month contract only. What sort of expenses should I factor in? A two bedroom apartment my family can visit, a car, health insurance (as a dual national, I don't pay for health insurance here in Quebec), trips home... anything else? I'm trying to figure out how much I would net after the temporary relocation expenses. (The company does not pay relocation expenses.) What sort of non-financial factors should I consider, based on your experience temporarily relocating without your family?

Moving from CA, US to BC, CAN w/very limited resources.

By my searching, it seems that there hasn’t been a “moving to Vancouver” question yet this year, so I’m here to fill the gap. I am considering a move from Sacramento, CA to Vancouver, BC and would very much appreciate advice and ideas on getting immediate needs met in Vancouver for the first 1-3 months. (I have read the cbsa.gc.ca site’s “Moving Back to Canada” pages, previous Ask MeFi answers, and other sources.) [more inside]

Tips for a family-wide reset?

My wife (27) and I (30) are moving our small family (+2 year old son, -anything that won't fit in 6 suitcases) across the country to Portland, Oregon. In large part we're leaving all of our (supportive, loving) local family and friends looking for adventure and to consciously decide the sort of people we will be (Along with a serious upgrade of location from suburban Central Florida). Have others done a similar reset with themselves or their entire family? Any recommendations on how to be loving and charitable to family and friends while you are leaving and enjoying the next phase? Or pointers on how to meet and embrace a new set of friends and "family"? [more inside]

Relocating to the US, health insurance advice needed!

I'm relocating to the US (from the UK) in a couple of weeks and having concerns about health insurance. My husband's employer covers health insurance for him, but to cover me as well we must take out the 'family policy' for $500 per month (if we had 4 kids this would be a great deal, but apparently it's the same price for the whole 'family' even if that's just me. This seems crazy to me, not sure if it is normal!). Is my alternative plan crazy? Health insurance companies confuse and scare me! [more inside]

Where should I live in Ontario?

I'm looking to relocate to Ontario for the summer with the possibility of staying longer if I'm accepted to one of the schools that I've applied to there. In particular, I've been looking at London, Hamilton, possibly Brantford. My significant other lives in New York (I'm moving from B.C.) so close to the border would be nice if there's a decent supply of job opportunities. What about Niagara Falls or St. Catharines? Too touristy? Are there any places that I should avoid. My budget is tight, but I want someplace safe.. If you're familiar with B.C., I'd like to avoid places similar to East Hastings or Granville at all cost. [more inside]
